Our daughter has received math tutoring twice weekly for the past 2 years. We are starting out third year and thank Bill for his professional yet down-to-earth approach. He is organized, flexible and has tried to accomodate our schedule. His calm disposition blends well with his tutoring style and never does he make my daughter feel inadequate or unintelligent. I would recommend Bill to other parents who are seeking a math tutor for their child.

Dane is an exceptionally good tutor! He helped me with a math class that was way over my head and I ended up getting a B. His knowledge is vast and he takes the time to explain everything on a level I can understand. Dane takes pride in his abilities and it shows through his dedication to teaching. I highly recommend Dane to help you with any level of math you are taking. His degree in mathematics was well earned.

When it comes to teaching, I'm very patient and can understand the perspectives of my students. Because I know my subjects well I can explain the answers with whatever media is best for the student, whether they are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. My patience is learned through experience as an unpaid intern at Swedish hospital in Seattle and six years of childcare experience at my church.

      About

I am a certified educator for grades K-8 coupled with a special education endorsement. I also have over 18 successful years as a private tutor in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics and study skills. I offer pre and post assessments to customize lessons to meet your student's specific needs. Lesson plans are individualized, creative, fun and most importantly, motivating. I will initiate a collaborative relationship with any and all appropriate teachers and other support staff involved in your child's education. Primarily, I tutor out of my home but am open to meeting at the student's home or a public library or another place of your choice. My passions are children, teaching and seeing what happens to a child when they gain the confidence and/or skills they were previously lacking before the intervention of some one-on-one time with a professional, caring teacher. It's a beautiful thing.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. How much does home tutoring cost?

The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
