Studies have shown that we learn best when we're smiling. After over 20 years of teaching, I have found that finding ways to make lessons and practicing fun helps my students achieve the greatest success. Of course, the fundamentals of technique and theory are essential to achieving mastery. I include those aspects of learning in the context of teaching music that captures the student's imagination. I teach ages 4 through adult and adapt my teaching techniques to fit the age and learning style of the student. Positive reinforcement and encouragement are always emphasized. I write clear notes for the students to take home so that they fully understand what and how to practice. Now that smart phones have audio and video recording capability, that, too, can help accelerate the learning process. This is done in such a way that the student does not become dependent on the recordings and still progresses well with their note reading skills. Video is also an invaluable aid with issues of technique. I teach a variety of styles including classical, jazz and pop. Included in the curriculum are improvisation and composition, for those who are interested. I teach privately and also offer group classes several times year, so that students can share their music with each other and go more deeply into specific aspects of music, such as music history. These classes are great fun and my students always look forward to them. At least two recitals are offered annually. Those who participate in the group classes find that they are more comfortable at the recitals, because they have come to know other students. Through recitals, they enjoy the pleasure of sharing what they have learned and having a sense of accomplishment. ****************************************************** TRAINING: -- Began lessons at 6 yrs old -- Double degree in Music from the University of Washington -- Special areas of study: Piano Performance, Piano Pedagogy, Music History and Music Theory -- Teachers and Professors with whom I studied independently: Neal O'Doan, Dr. Demar Irvine, Else Geissmar, Robert Evans -- Continued training in workshops through the WSMTA and periodic private piano lessons. Learning has no finish line! -- Began studying vocal jazz lessons in 2008. Performed in small venues as an amateur, including Tulas in Seattle. This experience has not only benefited me musically, but also has helped me remember what being a beginner feels like! I believe I am a better teacher as a result.

Now is a good time to start! Too often, there have been only two approaches to learning to play the piano. Many learn to play by ear; often, they are self-taught. They seem to be free to play anything, adding and changing to meet the situation. In reality, however, they are limited to playing only what they already know. Others learn to play by reading written music. This has primarily been the focus of most music instruction. These individuals seem to be able to play anything you can put in front of them, but actually, they are limited to reproducing the music of others. Don't ask them to play "Happy Birthday" at a party unless you provide the written music. There must be a better way, a third way. There must be a way to learn the piano without limitation, combining the joy of playing by ear with the strengths playing by written music. The goal of my musical instruction is exactly this: that you will be able to play without limitations. 5 keys to musical freedom: - Musical understanding (reading music, common patterns and musical styles) - Confident rhythm - Discerning ear - Creative expression (improvisation and composition) - Trained technique I have a Master of Music degree. Rates: * 40-minute lesson: $36 * 60-minute lesson: $54
