I hired Andrey for both tile installation as well as installing hardwood floors. He did a great job on both. He was flexible and didn't panic when something wasn't ready. He just re-scheduled. We remodel many apartment units and I plan on using Andrey for all my tile and wood floor installations.

Jorge and his crew did a really nice job for a very reasonable price. They installed insulation, hung and taped drywall (with a smooth finish), painted the exterior and painted the interior of a garage-turned-studio / workshop. I am a bit of a 'perfectionist on a budget'... so probably the most annoying kind of customer to work with. And while I did have to make a few requests throughout the job that I thought were sort of obvious (like covering the garage doors in plastic because the black exterior paint was misting on them), they were always very accommodating and wanted me to be satisfied with the project. So just be very specific at the beginning about your expectations and tell Jorge if anything comes up that you're not satisfied with, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result. One example... the floor was left with white drywall dust and mud splatters on the concrete (even though I had mentioned that it was our final flooring and not going to be covered up), and when I texted Jorge about it, his wife called me right away and they came over that evening to scrub it clean. They are really nice people to work with, and it's apparent that they care about their customers. I would work with them again on future projects.

I heard about Anthony's contracting through a friend of mine. I had hard wood floors installed in one side of my duplex and was so happy with the work I asked them back two weeks later to do new siding on the front of both duplexes. Again, the work was on time and very well done. I have decided to ask them back for a third time for more flooring replacement. Two thumbs way up for this company.

I have had the pleasure of working with Ron and Begg Hardwood Floors on many jobs around the Seattle Area. Begg does an amazing job with some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable. What impresses me the most is their ability to save floors that have been through over 100 years of neglect and transform them to new again. I trust no one else for the floors in my homes. Cedo was great to work with and did an excellent job tiling floors, building / tiling a custom shower and adding old bricks masonry onto an interior wall. He is extremely professional and goes to great lengths to make sure the work is as perfect as possible given the construction site conditions. My remodel turned out to be challenging because of the walls not being straight and the brick wall being very time consuming, but he was very gracious about any unforeseen obstacles and worked extremely hard to get the project finished. He was a very valuable thought partner each step of the way, and I ended up extending the original scope to include installing a backsplash, doors and trim. The end result looks spectacular and i would hire him again in a heartbeat!

We had Elegant Hardwood Floors refinish all the hardwood floors in our house (I believe around 1000 square feet, the entire main and upper level). The quality of the work was outstanding, but I was less impressed with the amount of communication that happened. For example, we were hoping to move into our house on a Sunday, and my wife called around 9am on the Thursday before to double check that all the work would be done in time for us to move in, but she ended up leaving a voicemail and had to call back again around 5pm only to be informed that the floors needed to cure on Sunday and we would only be able to use them on Monday. This sort of misunderstanding seemed to characterize many of our interactions. Elegant Hardwood Floors was very responsive when we had initial contact with them, responding very quickly to emails and being able to start work very promptly, which was much appreciated. They also showed up when we expected them and started work immediately. Overall we are very happy with the quality of work Elegant Hardwood Floors did, but feel that better communication (status updates during the job, calling us when the situation changed from what we originally had agreed to) would have made the job much more pleasant. Quality of work: 10/10 Communication: 6/10 Promptness/responsiveness: 9/10 Overall: 8.3/10

We were looking for a carpenter do do a fix up for our 2 bathrooms thinking we just needed a little wall job. When he looked behind walls he had to remove 3 tile walls they were full of rotted wood full of ants. In back bathroom he took the floor up and installed wood tile flooring and replaced wall. In big bathroom he re hung new tile complete with shampoo holder with special waterproofing the boards beneath. He did an excellent job and very quickly. I would recommend him to all my family and friends. He is Cuban so he has a cute accent and great personality he will be welcome in our home forever.

Chris was great from start to finish! We started having him paint our kitchen and dining room which turned out great. We found out he provided other services and hired him to install backsplash in our kitchen, as well as wood floors in our dining room. Everything looks great! He always kept us informed of progress, showed up when he said he would, and even gave suggestions on how we could save money in the process...who does that?! We are very greatful to have found him, and will definitely be hiring him again in the future!

I just recently had new hardwood floors installed and refinished. Since this is the first time for me to have new hardwood floors put in I had a lot of questions for Daniel. Daniel took the time to explain to me all the steps to the process and the various options I have for oil based finish and water based finish. He also made excellent recommendations on stain color choices. I had several projects going on at the same time including having my house repainted and new carpet put in. He was very accommodating to my renovation schedule. His crew not only worked super hard each day but also strived for the highest quality of work. Daniel’s team completed the work right on time and the floor looks amazing. The new floor and old floor looks seamless. I will definitely hire his team again for future projects.

We bought a house with badly stained carpet in the living room and stairs. As both my husband and I have allergies, removing this ourselves was not ideal. Tugsuu was very responsive from the very first message with his quote. He was very flexible and willing to come out on a Saturday to do the job. They left the job site cleaned and now we're ready for our next step - new wood floors! Thanks, Tugsuu. Happy 4th of July weekend!

We met with Ben at Ekahi Contracting to get a quote for painting the interior of our home. He really stood out as being more professional than the other painters that we met with. He quickly emailed estimates with different options. His contract was clear and concise, spelling out exactly what work is to be done (including clean-up afterwards) and when payments are due. He and his crew did a great job painting our whole interior, including the walls, ceilings, trim and doors. We had our old carpet taken out, planning to install the new carpet after the painting was done. Ben pointed out that we had a spot in the floor that had water damage, and that he could fix it. He took out the damaged sub-floor, inspected to make sure that there was no mold underneath, and fixed the floor. He again made a clear contract for this job, as before, and did a great job. We were also planning to have our deck repainted, and asked Ben about doing that. He was also able to fix our wobbly stairs (they are very sturdy and stable now). They sanded, primed and painted our deck, rails, lattice and stairs. Ben also used a special deck treatment for the floor of the deck that lasts longer than paint and is slip-resistant. We are very happy with the quality of work that we received from Ekahi Contracting and are planning to have Ben do some renovation work on our kitchen and bathrooms next.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
