John Fox is a true professional. He made our day so amazing. He met with us to be our videographer about a month before our wedding and we told him what we wanted. We trusted that he was good for his word- and he sure was! He showed up at my sister's house at noon on the day of the wedding (for a 7 o'clock wedding) and was busy shooting video right from the get go. He was polite to everyone and fit right in. At one point he was sprinting in front of us to get a walking shot of us - so sweet! He stayed at our reception until around 11 (maybe even later) getting all the great shots. All of the other videographers that we interviewed were 3-4 times more the price. We haven't got our video back yet (our wedding was only 2 days ago) but I know his rating will stay the same. WE can't wait to see the video! John is amazing and you won't be sorry if you hire him (and neither will your checkbook).

From start to finish, Edward and his team were very professional, timely, flexible, and considerate of our needs. They were able to ensure that the video footage was exactly how we wanted it, and were very flexible in our specific requests and needs (from music to when it comes in and how), and editing for the final video. Edward was very quick to respond to emails, and even though it was busy wedding season for him, he STILL got back to our emails and edit requests for our videos! Even with my constant emails and questions and probing, he was very professional and nice, and was able to deal with all my millions of emails to him! We are so lucky and thankful to have gotten such professional and great videographers for our wedding. Thank you so much, Edward and team!! We love the highlight video and the final video!! We could not have asked for a better experience and outcome!

It was a pleasure to work with John. With only about 10 days notice, he made sure to preview the venue and address any concerns. On the day of my son's wedding he and his assistant were everywhere, yet almost invisible. The wedding coordinator told me they were easy to work with and she wished all video guys were as good and easy to work with. Definitely recommend John for any video project.

We weren't sure if a video for our wedding was a good investment at first. But we are so glad we did. This was the most important and memorable thing we have from our wedding day. We will never forget how we felt. By far the best investment you can make for your wedding. 10/10

We are extremely happy that we hired Brodi. Originally we didn't think that we could afford a videographer for our wedding. But after speaking two friends and family they highly recommended it. Although on a budget Brody work with us the entire time before the wedding. I'm so happy that we decided to hire a videographer. Him and his assistant Amanda you're absolutely amazing. Not only showed up early but stayed late and he was a complete pleasure to work with. Thanks Brodi for working with us. You have a big future in this industry and I can't wait to see our wedding Through Your Eyes!

Maureen and Jim did an awesome job as our wedding videographers. They came to our rehearsal at the Church two days before to test the lighting so everything would be perfect for shooting our video. They were very professional to work with and showed up early for the beginning of our day. They captured our day very well and highlighted the most important parts which for us was our wedding ceremony and they also got great footage at our reception. My husband who is very camera shy appreciated working with them because they blended in with the background and captured everything as it was naturally happening, they never asked us to pose. I felt at total ease having them as my videographers because they have so much experience and they never bothered me with anything that day. Our wedding highlight video was amazing! It is the perfect sum of our day in 5 minutes which is helpful when you want to show your friends, co-workers and family who don't have 2 hours to watch the longer version. Both Maureen and Jim was with us from the beginning of our day at my 9 am hair appointment until 8:45 pm when I tossed my bouquet of flowers. They were flexible on staying a little bit past the time we discussed because they honor how hard it is stay on track with your wedding day schedule. The quality of the video is beyond my expectations and looks very professional and high quality HD. The sound was great too because you can hear our wedding vows exchanged very clearly which was very important to us. The rest of the footage has decent sound so you can catch what people are saying but nobody was miked for that part. The longer version of the wedding video itself is a little choppy meaning it doesn't flow as natural and lacks transitions from one scene to the next, but overall it captures our day very well and I think every wedding video is bound to be like that because there is so much going on in one day with lots of different people involved! I strongly recommend Maureen and Jim at Seat of the Pants Productions because they have outstanding, high quality work and you can trust them to give you a great product for you wedding video!

Picking Amora Cinema for our wedding video was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we made around our wedding. Words cannot sufficiently explain how in love with our wedding video we are!! Rafael and Pauahi so perfectly captured all of the excitement and emotion of our special day so that we can relive it over and over and over again. The video is seriously a piece of art - we get so many compliments on how cinematic it is and how it isn't just a recap of highlights, but how they beautifully tell the story of the day. Their work is just incredible.

We chose Robert as videographer for our wedding last summer at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in June 2015. Robert was professional, organized and very thoughtful in the preparation leading up to the wedding and on our big day. He provided us with an exceptional video of our ceremony and the highlights of our special day that incorporated our wedding song. We were so thrilled with the special details that were incorporated to make our lasting memories of our wedding so perfect! We would highly recommend Robert as a wedding videographer!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

      • Package 1: $1,400
        • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
        • Two cameras with audio equipment.
        • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
        • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
      • Package 2: $1,800
        • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
