Paul and Stephanie catered our wedding this summer and we were very pleased with their professionalism, the taste, quality, and presentation of their food, and their dedication in helping us realize our wedding vision. I was first contacted by them on Thumbtack in response to our request for a wedding caterer. We had already exhausted options from The Knot Vendor List and had been both overwhelmed with prices and underwhelmed with food taste and quality. Paul and Stephanie reached out to us quoting a plated meal including beef and fish for the same price as the cheap chicken buffets we'd been experiencing. They were kind enough to visit us in our home where Chef prepared generous samples of all the dishes we were considering. While we were eating, Stephanie took down details on the wedding and presentation. The food was phenomenal and hands down better than any other samples we'd been given. Chef even bustled about in my kitchen and found my Tupperware so he could package up the leftovers and leave them in the fridge for us. We decided to also take advantage of their pastry side and get our cupcakes for our dessert table from them. Stephanie hand delivered them to my work so I could sample them with the Fiancé. Chef did a great job at making me feel comfortable with everything he was preparing with his knowledge of gluten free cooking and baking and comprehension of cooking safety for individuals with Celiac. Nearly all our item we ordered were gluten free, and the ones that weren't, were kept separate. The months leading up to the wedding was simple and easy communication, I wish I could have said this for all my vendors. Payments expectations were made clear and could be easily made by credit card. Stephanie made time to have two additional consultations to discuss food plating, food table decorations, and cupcake topping design. I supplied her with a binder and the weekend before the wedding she had a phone consultation with me to review the details and it was evident she had already looked at all the contents extensively. The day of the wedding the catering team was on point. They jumped in and took over many of the duties our wedding coordinator was not attending to including setting up our appetizer and dessert tables and guest tables to my design plan. The food was excellent and all of our guests have said they couldn't stop stuffing themselves with delicious noms. The plating was lovely, the cupcake toppings were just as I'd envisioned, and the waitstaff and bartender were very attentive. Stephanie was present at the wedding and Chef Paul had prepared most of the food but was catering another event. I was so pleased with her and her staff and her attention to detail and hard work helping us create our day. They packed up all the leftovers for us and we were told they were the last vendors there still working hard at helping everyone clean up. If you are looking at catering a large event do yourself a favor and check out Paul and Stephanie. They are not only a great chef and planner duo, they are also incredibly kind and compassionate individuals. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't know Stephanie was also a wedding coordinator, I wish I would have hired her instead of the girl we did. Additionally, their prices are more than reasonable and worth every penny.

Chantel and her team did an outstanding job of catering our event. The food was delicious (cooked to perfection and nice and hot with many choices), the service was great (the ladies were all warm and friendly) and the set-up and clean-up was flawless. I received many compliments from guests regarding the food. They will most certainly be my caterers of choice the next time the need arises and I would highly recommend them!

200 people, middle of the day, bbq catering. I think the food was outstanding and there was plenty of it. Al was a pleasure to work with, arrived timely and was professional. I was asked repeatedly where I got the bbq from because it was "Darn tasty." We will certainly have you on our list of approved caterers!

As a business owner we have been referring Bonnie to our clients for months since we first discovered her. She has experience that ranges from wine pairing knowledge to high end catering experience. However, she is also able to meet the needs of all of our clients...no matter how complicated or simple that they request. We consistently get compliments on food for parties that she caters...and I find myself constantly saying "it isn't us but is our preferred caterer." Bonnie uses high quality ingredients and cares about meeting each individual client's needs and preferences. To top it off, her presentation skills are amazing! I will continue to recommend Bonnie's services to my customers and friends and hope that you give her a try as well!

Mike did a great job catering a meal for my family (20 people). It was the first time both sides of the family were meeting, and we didn't want to have to stress about food. Mike brought everything by right on time with warming trays. Really made the evening go smoothly. The food was great! Mike had no trouble accommodating the gluten-free requirement. Be sure to ask about the flourless chocolate cake!!

We had Design Perfect Catering help us with our holiday party. I was able to pick and choose items for our menu as we have a variety of dietary choices in our group. Response time was that day to the next day - very quickly when setting the menu. Our food was brought promptly at the desired time and was set up so nicely! It was very festive and a beautiful presentation. The food was really good, many compliments were made. Thank you for the great experience!

Courtney is amazing! She catered my wedding over a year ago. Food was outstanding! People still rave about it. She prepared a variety of foods to cater to my vegan daughter that still satisfied the tastes of everyone else. Everything was cooked to perfection, on time, unique and delicious! She cleaned up the venue kitchen and everything. I can't say enough how much I appreciate all that she did to make our wedding meal amazing!

Chef Jenn worked with me early on to come up with a menu that would meet our guests needs as well as my budget. She sent me a proposal which I reviewed and made a few changes. She pre-cooked the items ahead of the event, and made changes to the menu based on her findings for flavor, presentation, taste and reviewed the changes with me before making her final decision. Given this would not be a seated dinner, she worked with me on how to setup the food and took into consideration the time the food would be on the serving trays, no gas burner buffet tables here! She setup the tables, she also rented tableware, glassware, flatware, etc., according to what was needed. She picked it all up and her and her assistant did the setup. She was very thoughtful in placing only so many items out and refreshed them as it went low. Very upscale and classy! Chef Jenn and her assistant did the setup and clean up; read: I did not lift a finger. They arrived a few hours early to the home used the kitchen to finalize the prep and cooking. The food! The menu was incredible! Crab stuffed salmon with lobster champagne sauce and roulade de beaux, whipped potatoes with generous amount goat cheese and herbs (mouthwatering). We also had a generous and beautiful cheese ensemble to start, as well as a deconstructed ceasar salad served in glassware (because our event was standing only seats for a few so we wanted to make it easy for folks), delicious Brussel sprouts, and a mousse for dessert. The menu was beyond delicious! Amazing food 

When it came to food for our wedding, that was the part my husband wanted to choose. He is a chef, so it really meant a lot to him that our menu was phenomenal. After venue searching at resorts, we became discouraged with their preset menus with typical wedding food. We then decided to go with a venue where we could hire a caterer. Once the venue manager found out my husband's occupation, she immediately referred us to Twist Catering, stating they were for "foodies." We live here locally, so we were able to visit them for a tasting. It was out of this world. Chef Joel prepared everything for us, as discussed each menu item with us. We met with him numerous times, he helped me with the set up of everything, suggestions, he was there every step of the way for us during the wedding planning process. He even stopped by at the wedding to check on us. And the final menu chosen for the wedding was insane. I'm at the age where a lot of my friends are getting married, as well as attending weddings & all of the guests commented on how exceptional the food was. My husband & I have both worked in restaurants for many years, and know good service can be difficult to find. The food was delivered promptly, and the servers & bartenders were on point. They constantly checked on myself, as well as my husband & his family to keep our drinks full. Between the food, the exceptional service, & the kind treatment we received, it was truly memorable.

I have been a guest at several private dinner parties catered by Jen from the Salted Fig. These parties are by invitation only and promise a culinary journey you won't forget- and they deliver! Jen's menus are creative, cohesive, and absolutely delicious. The meals always feel so personal and nurturing, like she knew exactly what I wanted to eat, even though she is cooking for 20 of us. I would highly recommend The Salted Fig for any catering needs, especially if you are looking to serve up quality, excellence, and passion with every bite!

Emma is really easy to work with, and she makes amazing food. People could not stop talking about the dishes (we had a Hawaiian inspired party -Hawaiian food), and I kept getting asked for he recipes. Her bbq pulled pork was to die for, and the fish tacos were gone before I even had a chance to get one:) had to share my husbands to taste it. The only problem we had was time management. I had to help finish decorating the desserts (cupcakes and cake pops), while the guests started showing up. But to be fair, we added the cupcakes and cake pops to the menu at the last minute, so that was the reason we struggled with time. All in all, I would hire Emma again in the future!

Jackson’s catering was amazing! I had a celebration for 80 people and had no idea what I wanted to serve. Jackson gave me ideas of what might be good for the function we were hosting and I let him take over the menu! The food was incredible and we had a number of guests going back for seconds in addition to asking about who catered the food. We even had one guest post on Facebook that he had an excellent dining experience and said the chef was GREAT! Jackson was extremely well organized, timely, and also flexible with our schedule. I felt very comfortable in letting him “run the show” because it was evident that he knew what he was doing and it was nice for me to be able to enjoy our guests rather than worrying about the orchestration of the meal and appetizers. His presentation was wonderful. I had described the type of atmosphere I was going to decorate the venue in and he even accommodated and worked with that in the way the food was displayed. The portions were generous and everyone left with full stomachs! I’ve hosted a number of catered events in the past and this experience was by far the best one I’ve had!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
