Paul and Stephanie were the caterers for our wedding reception this August. They did a really fabulous job putting together a menu that was perfect for a summer event. Their pricing was fair and affordable and they were receptive, friendly and conscientious. We'd recommend them highly!

Chantel and her team were lifesavers! Our previously scheduled caterer for our wedding had a family emergency and had to cancel, so we were thrilled when she connected us to Chantel just a few weeks before the big day. Chantel met with me, and completely "got it" when we discussed the kinda of food my fella and I were hoping for, the overall themes/style of the Big Day, and our budget. When Chantel and her team arrived at the wedding, they dove right in and created a delicious meal, and beautiful display. I can't say enough great things- the food was fantastic, and Chantel and her team were everything we could have hoped for. Strongly recommended!

5 StarsPacific Northwest Catering provided food and dessert for our wedding March 28th, 2015. From the very beginning we were very impressed with how well Al stayed in communication with us. Especially for people getting married, it is usually a persons first go- round with a caterer. We did not always know the right questions to ask, but PNC walked us through everything. They were very flexible with the menu and options, even allowing us to add in Mac and Cheese, which was a huge hit at the wedding. When it came to the food- Rave worthy. I have had so many compliments on our BBQ theme. We had the pulled pork and chicken, baked potato salad, broccoli salad, and of course the mac and cheese for dinner. Everything was divine! We also had a mixture of mini and whole round pies for dessert. We offered Key Lime, A delicious crumbly apple, lemon meringue, and berry. All tasted amazing and were displayed beautifully. If I ever have a another major event I need catering for, I will definitely reach out to Al and PNC. Thanks guys!!

Its not an exaggeration to say that having good food at our wedding was at the top of our “wedding wants” list. We were having our dream wedding and finding food that would please us and our guests – all of whom are serious eaters – was an area of concern for us…right up until we had our tasting with Francisco ( K & F catering ) . After our menu tasting, we knew that if nothing else went well, the food would be fantastic! But in reality, we were wrong. The food – and the service and the servers – were so far beyond fantastic! We cannot find words to sufficiently describe just how delectable, delicious, scrumptious, amazing the food was for our cocktail hour and reception! And the entire staff was wonderful! We felt blessed to have each of them present for the entire time they were with us. We cannot thank Francisco enough and K & F Catering . He is very , very helpful , very open minded , so easy to work with👌, he knows what he is doing , our guest are still talking about the food and say that they had never had great food at the wedding like ours . Thank you for making our day very special . I wish if could add pictures of our wedding food .

Chef Emme catered our wedding and we couldn't be happier with the choice we made of hiring this company! The food was out of this world. We got so many compliments and comments throughout the night and days after. If you are looking for a caterer that will provide delicious, not your typical "wedding food", Chef Emme is the way to go. Besides the amazing food, it was such an easy process working with the Chef prior to our wedding day. She was very responsive, answered every single one of my questions in detail and was overall super easy to communicate with. I could really tell she really loves what she does and wants to make sure you are happy and satisfied. I would absolutely recommend this company to anyone looking for a wedding caterer.

We had Stephen cater our wedding on 8/29. It was by far the most painless process ever. From the get go, Stephen was a breeze to work with and removed all the stress from dealing with feeding 100 wedding guests. His price was very fair especially given the amazing quality of the food. Im still getting compliments on how delicious and fun the food was at our wedding! Will book Dogfather again for any future events!

I had KISS cater my wedding this past aug. the job they did from beginning to end was outstanding! They went above and beyond through out my whole wedding planning and wedding experience! It was such a relief to have them be a part of my big day, they helped with any questions or anything I needed, and helped me plan for things that I had not even thought of yet! Those cooking dolls were amazing!!! We had so much fun with them and the food was delicious. Everything cooked fresh on site and they cleaned up the kitchen when done. My wedding was a huge success because of them. I am planning a party for next year and will have them come to do the cooking at that event. They gave my wedding coordinator, also my cousin, two meat balls because she was starving and that made her day. They also saved some appetizers for me and my new husband. Very thoughtful. All the caterers in town were book so I turned to thumbtack and they were the only ones to reply, so I believe God brought them to me and I could not have done any better. So glad everyone was booked. Love you Cooking Dolls!!!! Diana Oleson

I have hired Joy Max Catering for my wedding catering for 130 people. Our wedding was on budget and we had only 4 months to plan it. Joy Max Catering has worked with us based on our budget and we were able to pick a menu we wanted. We were able to add and subtract thins we wanted or didn't choose to have. When I first tried my herb roasted chicken, I was wondering how come I could never make a chicken like that. It was tender, juicy and lots of flavor. The food had flavor and it was very homemade & thats what we were looking for. Everyone who I asked about my food, they said it was excellent! I am glad I have met the owner Joy, she is a great person to work with and talk about food. She is very professional, sweet and very very hard working. I would recommend Joy Max for an outstanding ability to work with people, base their menu, arrange payments and also cook a deliciously tasty food. Thank you Joy Max for your services.

Shauna was amazing to work with - she provided an incredible meal for our wedding and also took on the burden of supplying rentals. Everything went on without a hitch, and was a great experience! Late into our engagement, my wife was diagnosed with cancer. We saw the wedding as an opportunity to have a break from everything life has been throwing at us, and with Shauna's help it was an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend reaching out to Entropy Cooks if you are looking for a caterer for your event. The food was incredible, the service was great, the price was more than reasonable, and the experience was everything we had hoped and more.

Crystal was simply the best!! She was organized, thoughtful, and patient. Her careful attention to details and leadership of a professional staff ensured that our wedding reception was perfect!! The food was spectacular and its presentation was beautiful; we continue to receive compliments weeks later. Crystal was very helpful for many months leading up the reception and bringing my vision to life. She is very positive and willing to go the extra mile. I would HIGHLY recommend Crystal for any event large or small!

I needed a caterer for a wedding reception and initially clung to the first caterer to respond. Before I found Bert, I had a caterer who didn’t communicate anything, and was very pricy. Finally, a month before my reception date, I decided to scope out other options. My experience with Bert was outstanding from the very start. He didn’t just introduce himself, he had an entire portfolio together with sample menus, pricing and scenarios. His pricing is out of this world, and it includes everything from awesome customer service to impromptu wedding planning! He not only helped me with my food choices, but he also had recommendations on what works best at receptions for setup and execution. He met on location prior to go over everything, and he’ll even chill your beverages the night before. I can’t say enough about the kindness and professionalism of his staff. The food was amazing and cooked fresh on site. I would not hesitate to use Bert in the future, and I would recommend him to everyone and anyone. Thank you for making a nervous day sail smooth!!

Also, they were able to serve all of our 100+ guests very quickly. The pies were very delicious, we and all of our guests were very happy. Highly recommend!

Cierra Laub, Jarod Johnson, and Ash Candelario catered our wedding in August 2014. We had about 150 people to feed. The variety of dishes they prepared was wonderful. We had vegans, vegetarians, and others with no food specifications and there was something for everyone. My husband, our guests, and I were impressed with the quality of the food and service provided. Everything was refilled in a timely manner so no one was ever waiting to eat what they liked. The price to quality ratio for the food was very affordable. We had a budget and they did an amazing job to work within and even under that. We would have them cater again without hesitation.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
