Fast, on time, personable, thoughtful. They didn’t try to up sell. Everyone I worked with was friendly from the woman who helped me book the appointment and understand the process as a first time home owner, to the gentlemen who came to install the water heater and fix a kitchen issue. Gave us an estimate and they stuck to that estimate. We will 100 percent be using them again.

Enrique came to repair a leaking bathtub faucet, and to service our furnace. He was prompt, professional, and kept me informed every step of the way, including potential costs. The furnace was quickly repaired. He discovered that the faucet was leaking behind the wall, caused by a connection of PVC pipe to a copper intersection. He consulted me with the cost and choice of materials and labor, prior to purchasing, and was thorough and efficient, as well as courteous and professional. He completed the job, returning on the following day (a Sunday) to make sure the connections were properly fixed to prevent another leak, and also to replace the wall board. He is knowledgeable, and left the bathroom, bedroom wallboard, and floor clean when the repair was complete. He charged exactly as quoted, and provided receipts for the replacement parts. I highly recommend him for handyman services, and wouldn't hesitate to call him again if we need plumbing, painting/drywall, water heater, or furnace repairs.

Jeremy helped me with many odd jobs after I bought a house and needed to get some repairs done quickly. There seems to be nothing Jeremy can't handle. He hooked up a dishwasher, fixed a dryer, fixed my water heater TPR valve, and many more jobs. I plan to have Jeremy help with other jobs in the future too.

Tyler looked at our 17 year old rheem gas heater. He made excellent logical recommendations that we will follow. It made no sense to even open it for How old it was and it made more sense to get a waterless tank as we will have to replace it in a couple years anyway when we sell our house. He did this visit without charging us and we will use him to install our new heater. What a nice personable guy who Definitely knows his stuff!

This is a top notch crew! My husband and I walked up to their booth at the home show after talking to several other companies that provide the same service. The answers we got from Steve & Leilani were honest and accurate and set them apart from the others. We felt they were the right fit for the work we needed done. We had a tankless/on demand hot water heater installed along with a new furnace and A/C unit. Steve came out assessed the job prior to starting and when his crew (Devon & Kevin) showed up they were efficient with their time, very conscientious of our hardwood floors and all around nice guys who did a phenomenal job! The crew has made themselves accessible to ask questions during and after the install, which I totally appreciate. Steve also had a few suggestions for improvements on our gas fireplace that I wasn't even aware was also something that his company did. I was so pleased because I've been wanting those improvements for awhile and he made it happen! I can honestly say my husband and I are beyond happy with Steve and his crew and highly recommend them for any work you need done. Hiring them was one of our best decisions!

I highly recommend Jim Usher! He provided prompt, thorough, and outstanding customer service when he performed an LP gas pipe leak assessment and repair job at my home recently. I definitely sleep better knowing my gas water heater and kitchen range are safely operational with the gas leak in the garage fixed. Jim is very personable, a great communicator, and brings a wealth of knowledge and field experience to the job. I would definitely hire Jim Usher again for any future plumbing need.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
