Every lesson Scott points me towards a bar way higher than I expected to be at this point. He listens and understands where I am trying to go and customizes the lessons to guide me there. It feels like his teaching is tailored to my specific goals but I get the impression this is his gift that he imparts on each student. Along with chords and learning songs, which I anticipated as a beginner he’s taken my feedback and giving me tips on voice, music theory, and soloing. Most of all he inspires me to practice and enjoy this craft that he loves. Oh yea, he also fixed my acoustic guitar on the spot after I was quoted $65 and a week of work from a music store. He is like Mr. Miyagi (a la Karate Kid) of guitar. I couldn't be more psyched to be on this journey with him.

My four year old son has been taking lessons with Aleta for over six months. She is wonderfully warm and has a great way of meeting him at his level conversationally and never talking down that is very refreshing. Musically she has been able to accomplish so much with him in such a short time! She applauds and encourages his accomplishments, notes where he has problems but chooses her battles wisely. She knows that his enthusiasm for the instrument will move him further than perfectionism and it truly has! When working with a younger child like mine, she is wonderfully flexible. If he is feeling nervous about playing the piano or having trouble sitting still, she encourages ear-training games or fun theory activities or even dancing. If he wants to show her "his versions" of songs, she encourages him to try the song as written first and after he accomplishes that she joins him in a duet while he plays "his version". She really follows his lead while maintaining her educational agenda. She has really taken the time to get to know him and her activities and lessons are increasingly tailored to his interests and abilities. He has a great affection for her and looks forward to lessons every week and is sometimes even sad when they end! We highly recommend Aleta - she has done wonderful work with my son and we look forward to learning more and more from her as he grows!

I’ve been studying guitar with Mary for about two months now, and I can’t say enough good about her. tl;dr: Mary will understand and support your goals for guitar playing, and she is beyond capable of helping you reach those goals. First, Mary is very supportive and cognizant of my goals as a musician. If I had a song in mind that I wanted to learn, I’m absolutely sure she would help me learn it. As a beginner, however, I don’t have anything in mind and happily play the tunes she gives me. Speaking of tunes, she has so many on hand. Every week she gives me new sheets with songs that cover the technique we work on. Mary’s extensive lesson repertoire certainly helps fulfill my goal of expanding my musical vocabulary to more artists and genres, all while developing my skills on guitar. Similar to her supportiveness, Mary is also very understanding yet insistent. As a busy young adult, on average I work eight to ten hours a day and follow a daily workout regimen to boot. While my goal is to practice guitar at least 60 minutes per day, on many days I don’t have time and fall short. Despite less-than-ideal practice, Mary accommodatingly works around the progress I make (or don’t make). At each lesson I can consistently expect help with last week’s trouble areas in addition to new material — Mary sure likes to press on. Can you blame her? There’s technique to master and songs to learn! :) On her teaching style, Mary is very creative. She customizes her lessons to the individual, and — I really like this about her — she tells me exactly what she wants to cover at the next two or three lessons. This way I know what she’ll teach, and I have the opportunity to discuss what I want to learn (e.g. scales, barre chords, etc.). With decades of guitar study under her belt, she can teach anything. By “teach” I mean make you really understand. She has countless analogies, anecdotes, and demonstrations for helping you learn or improve any technique. She’ll try things until it “clicks” for you. Teaching creativity like Mary’s is an invaluable skill that will undoubtedly help any student she has. To end on a light note, Mary truly is a spectacular musician. Her playing is effortless and always a joy to hear. She makes even the beginning things I’m working on sound musical and fun to play. Mary is a gem of a teacher, and I can’t recommend her enough.

Elaine has been teaching 3 of my children piano lessons for 3 years now. She has since added a 4th. She is patient and encouraging yet firm. She makes sure they strive to do their best and teaches strong technique. She also include improv, ear training, and chords. Rather than just sticking to the books, Elaine is constantly coming up with fun, creative ways to reinforce the theory the kids are learning.

My daughter has only had two lessons with Aaron, so I do not have a long term relationship to base my review on. However, I can say that Aaron was very prompt at returning my emails and phone calls . Very professional in how he approached making financial arrangements and scheduling our lessons. He provided references for me to check with. He offered a complementary initial lesson. And perhaps most important, when I pick up my daughter from her lesson she has a smile on her face and says Aaron is very nice.

We’ve known Mariya for many years – since 1998, when we moved to the Seattle area and began to look for a piano teacher for our then 14-year-old daughter. We were lucky to have found Mariya. From our first meeting we could see that she was a passionate and dedicated pedagogue and that she was the right teacher for our daughter. Generous both with the time she devoted and the incredible knowledge she shared, Mariya adapted a very thorough and nurturing teaching approach that inspired our daughter and allowed her to continually grow and progress. It was an incredible 4-year journey – through hours of lessons and countless performances our daughter conquered many beautiful and increasingly difficult pieces, developed the ability to hear and produce very specific sounds at the instrument, and began to uncover her own artistic voice. The incredible progress was evident simply because after only one year with Mariya as her teacher, our daughter went on to win the MTNA-Baldwin Piano Competition at both WA State and NW Division levels. Studying with Mariya helped our daughter to make the decision to become a professional musician. She went on to receive her BM and MM degrees from the Eastman School of Music and ultimately became a successful pianist and vocal coach, working at international and regional opera houses across US and Canada. Currently she is the Principal Coach and Music Administrator with Pacific Opera Victoria. As parents, we like that we can talk with Mariya as she is a very good communicator. She finds and creates many performing opportunities for her students and always encourages them to express themselves musically and artistically. Mariya has a fantastic educational background and can help one develop not only a solid piano technique and discerning musical taste but also an in-depth knowledge and understanding of musical styles, music theory and history.

Thanks Jessica for teaching our 2 kids. She offers violin lessons for older one and piano lessons for the younger one. We had lots of trouble with our previous teachers. Jessica knows how to deal with them not practicing and help them set goals for their music learning. Our 2 kids also have different personality and talent level and she seems to tailor her style accordingly. I would recommend her as a piano and violin teacher.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
