Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a massage therapist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Ask your massage therapist if they offer consultations over a video chat or phone call. If they do, ask them any questions you have about the upcoming appointment. For example, ask what precautions they're taking to keep both parties safe due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You might also want to ask if they offer gift cards that can be used at a later time, remote services or even virtual lessons for you or members in your household.

Also, ask how they plan to handle payments, and whether you can pay through an online or digital method instead of with physical cash or credit cards.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a massage therapist when social distancing?

Because massage therapy requires person-to-person contact, social distancing is not possible. However, you can ask massage therapists near you if they can offer remote services instead, such as lessons for you and your partner.

If you don’t want to book an appointment with a massage therapist right now, but you will in the future when the pandemic subsides, consider paying your massage therapist in advance or tipping them anyway. You can also ask about buying a gift card for future work.

Do massage therapists offer remote or virtual services?

Ask massage therapists near you about the possibility of remote services. You might come across profiles that state the therapist is offering remote services such as lessons and techniques you can do on your own, with a friend or with a partner.

Does a massage therapist need to enter my home?

Many massage therapists operate their businesses out of their own homes, though some offer mobile massages and come to your home. You should ask the massage therapist where they typically operate and if they are making any special accommodations to better observe the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing

If you must cancel or delay your massage therapy appointment due to COVID-19, consider asking the therapist if they can offer massage techniques or lessons via video chat, email or some other digital format. You can also ask if it's possible to buy gift cards that can be used at a later time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a massage?

Many massage therapists accept digital payments through Venmo, Apple Pay, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle and other online platforms. Even businesses that do not typically accept digital payments may be changing their methods to practice social distancing. Just check with your massage therapist before the appointment to see how they handle payments.

How can I find out if a massage therapist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential COVID-19 service provider varies from state to state and city to city. To see which businesses are considered essential in your area, visit the official government website of your state or city.

You can also read CISA’s publication on identifying critical workers to find out more information on a national level. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How long is a Swedish massage?

A Swedish massage can range from 45 minutes to 120 minutes or more. A longer massage allows the massage therapist to give you an all-over massage and then circle back to focus on areas in need of extra bodywork. Some massage therapists recommend that your first massage be longer to give the therapist time to learn more about your health and any injuries or pain before providing you with a healing massage. The longer your massage, the more it will cost. Swedish massage is made up of five body strokes designed to relax, heal, improve circulation and maintain health. The techniques are called effleurage, friction, petrissage, tapotement and vibration. During Swedish massage, all parts of the body are addressed, and the client is often unclothed and draped with a cloth. Swedish massage is proven to be beneficial to mental and physical health, and has been shown by the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine to boost the immune system.

Is hot stone massage safe in pregnancy?

If you’re ready for relaxation and relief from pregnancy pains, prenatal massage may be a great healing option. Once your prenatal care provider has approved you for pregnancy massage, look for a licensed massage therapist who also has training and certification in prenatal massage techniques.

The safety of hot stone massage during pregnancy depends on several factors including the stage of your pregnancy and where on the body the hot stones are applied. The massage therapist should avoid raising your core temperature or using hot stones on the abdomen. When in doubt, talk to your prenatal care provider.

How much are pregnancy massages?

Prenatal massages can be a safe and therapeutic way to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy. A prenatal massage can promote a sense of relaxation and well-being for expectant mothers. The national average cost for a pregnancy massage ranges between $70 and $90. The cost of a pregnancy massage will vary depending on where you live, the length of the massage, and the massage therapist. Typically, the longer a massage, the higher the cost. Some massage therapists charge the same rate per minute, regardless of massage length, while others charge less per minute for longer appointments. Here are two examples of average prenatal massage costs:

  • Therapist A: Offers a 30-minute massage for $45, 45 minutes for $60, 60 minutes for $75, 75 minutes for $90 and 90 minutes for $105.
  • Therapist B: offers a 30-minute massage for $45, a 60-minute massage for $85, a 90-minute massage for $115 and a 120-minute massage for $145.

What is a deep tissue full body massage?

A deep tissue full body massage is a form of healing bodywork. At your first massage, your massage therapist will do a brief intake. They will ask you questions about the type of pressure you’d like to receive during your deep tissue massage, any previous massage experience you’ve had, and any injuries or sensitivities you have. You can remain clothed, or the massage therapist will provide draping so that even if you’re not wearing clothes you are always fully covered. Deep tissue massage may be a good option for people with chronic pain or muscle tension. The systematic deep tissue strokes will work to break down any scar tissue or stiff tissues and create ease in your body again. Massage therapists use their hands, forearms, fists and knuckles to knead and stroke your muscles and loosen adhesions. Although deep tissue massage work is intense, it should not be painful, so communicate clearly with your massage therapist so they know if you’re having any discomfort. The national average cost of a deep tissue massage is between $70 and $90.

Kitty was amazing! I cannot thank her enough, I was in an auto accident 2 years ago and have had constant neck and back pain. I decided to try massage since nothing else seemed to work. After my first massage I felt so good, my headaches decreased and my back hasn't been as stiff. I will definately be getting massages regularly from Kitty, I believe she has magic hands.....

I am not a massage person, but have been in a lot of discomfort that I was ready to try anything. Kitty intuitively identified all the problem areas & effectively addressed them. She is deceptively strong! Kitty doesn't charge enough, very reasonable price for quality of her massage! I will be returning, for sure!

Phenomenal. In 19 years of receiving massage, Kevin is in the top 3 best massage therapists I've ever experienced. Knowledgeable, perfect pressure, gentle and patient with old injuries and trauma. I feel great after the session; he released areas I didn't know were tight. Highly recommended!

Very good relaxation massage, Kitty has very good technique and was able to work out some muscle tension for me. She has very strong hands and I actually has to have her back of a little and that rarely happens, but is very skilled as well.

Alan was very nice and created a very relaxing environment. He was also super flexible with the space needed. The massage itself was exactly what i needed. Alan was not only able to offer the pressure I needed, he also offered information about spots and what could be causing them. I will absolutely be booking again!!

Edward was friendly and made sure he was meeting my expectations on the depth of my massage. He checked in to make sure it wasn’t painful or to soft. (Deep tissue). He also has a flexible schedule to meet the need of a customer. He asked about what was my part of my muscle groups to concentrate on and a little health history. (Injury suffered)

I had a chance to book a session with Kitty on very short notice which was wonderful for me as I travel for a living and when I am home I don't tend to have much free time. My personal preference is for a pure relaxation massage unless I have a very specific muscle set that is sore. This time I literally just wanted to zone out and feel amazing and get rid of some stress. Goal achieved!! Kitty immediately made me feel comfortable and at home and got right to work. Her hands are amazing. While I do not like deep tissue massages, I am guessing she would most likely be very good at it. She seems to have very strong hands. She also has a great technique and I felt like jello when I left!!! That is exactly what I wanted. Highly recommend and will be going back myself time and time again!!! Thanks

Katie is fantastic. I have been searching for someone to give me regular massages that’s available on my busy schedule, Katie fits the bill! She was able to read my body and what it needed to release years of tension. She was a delight to talk to and you can’t beat the ability to stay in the comfort of your own home. I loved the knowledge she shared about how my body was responding. I already have my next appointment scheduled! Thanks Katie for helping me be my best self!
