Asked to remove the home remodeling garbage from my condo unit. The pricing range was fairly clear from the beginning. The guy adjusted the pricing upward due to a little more load versus what I described but it fell in the fair range. On time, patient, and professional guys!!

Nolan and Tim were easy to work with. Repair projects tend to be more complicated than new installations. They had the supplies and ability to tackle a variety of jobs. I’ll use them again and recommend them to friends.

I manage a very busy gas station and last Thursday the latch on the door of our public restroom came loose and detached itself. The latch was broken and no longer functional so we had to close the restroom which caused our customers a lot of grief. My GM called another company we've used a few times in the past and they advised that they didn't do repair work on the weekends but would be able to come Tuesday which meant that we'd be out of a restroom for 6 days. The owner, (he's 95 yrs old) who comes in daily, wasn't very happy so I went online and found Thumbtack. Jarrod was a Godsend! He replied immediately (on a Saturday!!) and came in the next day prompt and prepared. He thoroughly explained everything he did and quoted me cheaper than the other company. I strongly recommend Jarrod for your repair needs!

The plumbers who did my shower repair (Ryan and Curtis) did an outstanding job. They arrived on time and first assessed the reason for the leaking faucet. They provided several options for the repair, including low and higher cost options. They did a great job on the repair. The shower works better than it did before the repair (e.g. better water pressure and the handle works better).

I've had a badly misaligned double front door since I bought my new house 18 months ago. I've been debating replacing it, but at $2500 or more, I've been putting it off. I called around everywhere I could find locally, but most weren't interested in repairing. I entered my job description here on Thumbtack, including the details about the old fashioned interlocking metal weather stripping. He was the only response I got, and thank goodness. He was out to my house the very next day, started the job as soon as he got here, and cost a grand total of $150. Needless to say, he's saved in my phone for all home repairs from now on.

Everything about our experience with Dennis was great! Our gas water heater went out and while I'm pretty good at repairs, I didn't know enough about replacing this appliance so we looked at the reviews and hired Dennis. His expertise, attention to detail, professionalism - all top-notch. And on top of it all, a very nice guy! We couldn't have asked for a better professional experience. Will definitely hire again.

Coming home from vacation, our front lawn was pooling what I thought was rain, but a broken water pipe. I called Plumbing Masters NW and had them come out and see the extent of the damage and see what they would be able to help me. They gave me option, to repair or to replace. What I liked about these guys, they're very honest and transparent about their pricing. After we decided to go with the replacement, Rob and his team rolled up their sleeves and got to work. There were city permits and other things that needed to be done, but Rob took care of all of it. They kept me in the loop throughout the whole entire repair job, which was nice. The job took about 2 days, and Mark and Rob's son Jr, made sure we had water everyday by rerouting the water for us. They even came on a Sunday to get things done. At the end, they stayed right on with the estimate they gave me and we were very satisfied with their work. I would not hesitate to hire them again. Hopefully not for the same repair. They really strive for customer satisfaction, and was much appreciated! Thank you Rob and the team!

Erin was great from All New Again. His communication was great, and he removed the existing fan and installed the new fan. This did end up with him having to cut the drywall with too large a hole for the existing fan, which will end up costing us around $150 more unfortunately to repair. Had we known this we could have purchased a larger fan and not needed the drywall repair, but Erin had insisted on getting a same size fan to replace it for ease of installation. All in all though, the new fan works, just a shame about the gaping unexpected hole!

Steve Dahlin has worked for and alongside my spouse and I for more than ten years in many facets of restoration and renovation of our historic property, such as carpentry, siding installation, painting, repairing and restoring historic floors and thresholds, windows, and exterior and interior historic moldings. The projects we've worked on together have focused on jobs both small and large on the renovation of our two-hundred-year-old historic house and barn. Steve has brought his expertise and long experience to solving the often sticky problems that emerge when restoring, preserving, renovating, and replicating historic features. One project particularly stands out: We had found an original, historic window in terrible disrepair and deterioration that we wanted to restore and put back into its original location. Every other contractor, window supplier, etc., that we spoke to told us that the window was beyond repair and that we should discard it and purchase a new one. Steve, however, took on the job and did a fabulous job of restoring the window to not only its former beauty but also its functionality. Steve impresses us with his willingness to come out and help us even when the jobs are very small. Steve has recently worked with us on repairing our historic barn, and we've been very pleased with the result.

Jonathon was very professional and did a great job. We are moving and had several small jobs that needed to be done. He took care of everything in 1 morning at a very reasonable cost and showed me how to fix a couple of easy things myself. I would highly recommend The Handyman Seattle for any home repairs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
