The technicians were very honest and helpful. They gave many options on how to repair the valve that was faulty. The prices were competitive and they were able to schedule us in quickly. The whole process was great from start to finish. We will definitely recommend them, and use them for any other plumbing projects that may come up.

Eric installed a 60" TV into our new slate stone fireplace - PERFECTLY!!!! Because of the size of the TV - and the fact it had to be mounted in slate stone - I had a hard time finding a contractor to perform the installation - after reviewing the photos. Eric's quote was incredibly fair (TOO FAIR) and his customers reviews speak for themselves. I was very nervous - as Eric did inform me that this was the first TV mount into slate stone...BUT Eric came over - measured, prepped and made sure the mount was level...watched videos to back up this type of install...left a few times to get special drill bits...he was INCREDIBLY careful and precise...and it worked! AND while he was at the house - we hired him to install a dishwasher and a gas oven as well...the install was complicated - but Eric stuck to his quote. He did not ask us to reimburse him for the extra tools he needed (But we took the receipts from him and paid for them as well) we left him a great tip - I hope others do so as well...he is worth it and we would for sure hire him again!

With traffic and competing priorities, I don't expect a contractor to show up exactly on time, but it sure is nice when they keep you updated frequently on their ETA. These guys were a little late, but very professional about letting me know their timeframe. Nice crew and competitive prices.

Mogi and his crew painted multiple interior areas in our home where we’d done some remodeling. They also hung crown in our family room and installed customized casing around a built-in wine fridge. They showed up on time and worked efficiently, and the work was good quality. When finished they were willing to touch up anywhere I asked. Mogi is very interested in making sure you are happy with the final product. This is refreshing. Part of the job involved trying to fix some shoddy work another contractor had just done on casing and texture, and they did a good job to fix that as best they could. Mogi proved himself on this project and I would definitely recommend his services. I am in discussions with him now to hire him and his crew for a larger garage remodel project.

We had Gill working on HWT replacement. He has responded first to our project and was very quick to reply. He had price estimated right away based on make and model of the previous HWT that had to be swapped. Appointment was scheduled for the next day and Gill did a great job. Tenant verified that work order has been completed and that Gill was a professional and a very nice person. We will definitely recommend Bernhard's dependable drains and sewers LLC for HWT replacement and will have his contact on file for our further projects. Thank you, Gill!

Mr. Gomez is the best professional and responsible contractor I have hired in over 50 years of owning a home. He is the only bidder that I have seen that first spray paints, rolls the paint to work it into the surface, and then sprays a second time. His rates are very competitive and I would recommend him very highly.

Chris was extremely responsive. I made an appointment for another plumbing issue, but the day before Chris was supposed to be at my house, my sewer blocked. Chris arranged to squeeze additional time to fix blockage. He explained everything that he was doing and cost. Price was reasonable. Chris was a true savior! I would recommend Chris any time.

Aaron of JAFCO was very professional. We had sewer blockage. He diagnosed the problem and provided a recommended solution at a reasonable price. The solution required replacing approximately 25' of exterior sewer line and installing a clean-out. His crew appeared promptly at the time scheduled and all work was completed as efficiently as possible. I highly recommend JAFCO Co for any plumbing needs. I certainly will work with him again in the future for my plumbing projects..

I couldn't have hired a better Pro to handle this project, Ray is very thorough and he completed everything quickly and perfectly. He not only finished this project but also went above and beyond to help me deal with a multitude other issues that come with an old house. He even pointed out many things I didn't even know about and took care of some of them just as a courtesy. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the result and we will definitely make Ray our preferred contractor. We 100% recommend hiring Ray if you get a chance, there is no way you will get more value for your money with someone else.

We had a previous contractor come in and not only waste a lot of materials, but destroy a potentially good tile job. Marin gave us a hard choice, to either repour a subfloor or level with concrete removal. It was worth it. His team came in, repoured, leveled, installed tile, and our new floor is PERFECTION. Not inexpensive, but the work is the best I've seen. We'll be having them do our bathrooms as we continue our remodel. Thanks so much!!!

I hired Jesse to do a major kitchen remodel, bath, new doors and interior paint, plumbing, and electrical work. Jesse and his crew were very considerate and clean. Jesse explained to me things in easy-to-understand terms, and when he found potential problems with the house he explained what needed to be done to determine the best course of action. I chose Jesse out of 3 contractors that I interviewed as I found him easy to work with, thorough, and very reasonable with his prices. He gave me choices and called me to problem solve when necessary. I have owned several houses and worked with other contractors who try to to cut corners. Jesse does not do this. His work is superb and top notch! I would hire him again!

Cody and his team were very helpful during a very stressful plumbing crisis that required replacing 100 year old pipes in my home and inspecting the sewer line. Cody stayed until the job was done, even though that required work after normal hours. I was so grateful to have an honest and reliable team of professionals in my home.

Raymark arrived quickly after we had problem with a buried sewer pipe. They excavated using shovels to minimize garden damage and repaired the sewer pipe efficiently within 24 hours. Very impressive. They were polite and easy to deal with. I also called Raymark to replace our faucet and reverse osmosis water filter system. Again they responded and completed the job professionally within 24 hours. Job done. Happy.

Willie was prompt at coming out to give me a fair bid for our garage update. He was honest about the timeline. When he said he and his crew would be here at nine they were even five minutes early. He has a mature crew in Franciso and Juan and they are the hardest workers I have ever seen. The work was superior to my previous contractor. He had installed windows and never returned to caulk or paint the trim. Willie gave me a discount to finish that work as he and his crew were installing windows too. The siding he installed and painted on our garage made a dilapidated sixty year old building look BRAND NEW. With the new windows it is light and cheery inside too. He subcontracted the new roof and it is beautiful and a great price within the total bid for the garage update.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

          • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
          • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
          • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

          Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
