I found David after a long and exhaustive search looking for a music theory teaching; as an adult I wanted a teacher who could understand my goals and develop a teaching plan to address them. David has exceeded what I thought I needed - he's brilliants, and has a deep and wide knowledge of MUSIC. We have adjusted what we cover and how we cover it so that I remain interested, challenged, and can see my knowledge grow. He's also provided recommendation on resources that will help me - selecting the most significant and appropriate based on learning style and goals. I actually composed a piece of music!! Never my goal, but I can see how that practice and understanding contributes to my enjoyment of music, and my goal to play piano.

David is my son's first guitar teacher. He has really progressed and enjoys David's relaxed teaching style, and encourages him to improve at his own pace. He focuses on songs my son wants to learn, not just songs out of a song book. While he teaches music theory, it's presented inside good songs that are fun to play. Over the past year he's learned finger picking, muted strings, strumming techniques, chords, sight-reading, and pull-offs. David is courteous, encouraging, and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend him to my friends.

David is a very knowledgeable musician and teacher. I have had lessons from him in both music theory and a band setting. As a band leader he is outstanding and has helped me to understand the theory behind improv soloing. In the study of music theory he is a vault of knowledge and has broken things down to the smallest part so that beginners like me can start learning and USING the info in practice. The book he wrote is well laid out and very useful both in organization of theory and tools for practice on saxophone.

I have worked with David as a teacher of a Rock Band class and related Music Theory. He is knowledgeable, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and fun. He wrote his own theory book about improvisation which has been very helpful in making something which could be scary, both accessible and possible. In Rock Band he works with many kinds of instruments quite effectively.

With a PhD in music, David Shere brings a wealth of knowledge to music instruction, and he's a fantastic musician and performing artist. I've been in his improvisation class for a year now, in addition to studying theory with him. He's an outstanding teacher and working with him has led to a huge improvement in my performances. Plus his classes are a lot of fun; no small accomplishment considering how much material we cover! I highly recommend David as a teacher.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I'm constantly reading new guitar books that come out, and learning new music. I spend a lot of time on the internet looking for lessons and tutorials for myself and my students. I write a lot of tutorial material myself.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Learning the guitar is a long-term commitment. There are habits and motor skills that you need to build. You have to memorize some music theory and some basic chords and scales before you can play your favorite song. I get a lot of first-time students who say "I just want to take a couple of lessons to learn the basics." It doesn't work like that. If you want to make real progress, you need to take lessons for at least a year.
