My dishwasher leaked requiring a full kitchen remodel. Anthony negotiated with my insurance company to get me a higher amount in order to recreate a better quality kitchen. He patiently walked me through each step, was always quick to respond with answers to my questions, helped me create new possibilities for the redesign, and has offered suggestions along the way for a quality kitchen at a very reasonable price. He is professional, courteous and kind, is easy going and easy to work with. He has been involved with each phase from the cabinet installation, counter tops, flooring and cabinet finish work. My kitchen is looking great. I intend to use him in the near future for my laundry room remodel.

Tom installed light fixtures, smoke alarms, security motion detector lights, and a big file cabinet. He also caulked and did touch up painting. He works quickly, and cares to make it look nice. His price is reasonable and he has the know - how. I am hiring him again.

I'm very pleased with the custom cabinet Andy built for my kitchen. He was very responsive during all of my communications with him and provided detailed estimates of cost and progress before, during and at the completion of the job. He had to come up with a creative solution to make the cabinet work and now it looks like it came with my kitchen. I'll definitely work with Andy again.

We highly recommend Jack and HouseMasters. We had an idea and a budget. Jack brought the experience and expertise to make it happen, quickly and within budget. Jack is a great listener. He helped us take an existing, poorly designed kitchen storage area and transform it into something functional and beautiful. This included installing a window in the middle of winter! Jack brought positive attitude and flexibility to work everyday. This was critical because I try to economize when I can, and re-use and re-purpose existing material we have on our farm. I'm constantly adjusting course. Jack patiently worked with me during these adjustments. The project grew to include finishing two bathrooms and completing trim work on a remodel that had stopped mid-stream. The previous carpenter didn't have the eye or attention for detail that Jack brought. I feel very fortunate to have found him. We have since asked Jack to return to work on additional projects including structural work to our garage and relocating stairs to our barn hay loft and building new barn doors. Whether its rough carpentry in a barn or finish carpentry in the house, Jack is the man you want on the job. He really saved the kitchen remodel job after the cabinet maker we hired screwed up their measurements twice. Jack took a cabinet that wouldn't fit and made it not only work, but look great too. I have no reservations about hiring Jack for any project.

After having a truly awful experience with a large contractor in the remodel of our kitchen this past summer and fall, it was with some trepidation that I ventured into the arena of small business contracting as a remedy for the previous disaster. The possibility of experiencing something similar again weighed heavily on me; nevertheless, the job needed to be finished. So I went through the bidding process on Thumbtack and consulted with several contractors, deciding on Forte Construction Alliance to complete the work of tiling the backsplash in our kitchen. Nate Forte has a wealth of experience that is evidenced by his easy-going and confident evaluation of the task at hand. He examined the previous contractor's shoddy workmanship, explained what needed to be done and how he (and his assistant Ivan) would fix the mess, made suggestions about what specific tile types, colors, and grout would best suit my clearly stated budget constraints (and where to purchase the requisite materials at a reasonable price). Nate immediately sent me a clearly detailed bid that was consistent with other bids I had received. Nate's assistant Ivan (and later Ivan's father) showed up at the appointed times, got to work right away, and completed the job precisely when they said they would. Ivan is an amiable, highly skilled and very focused man; it was a pleasure to watch him work, and work hard. Nate carefully inspected the work that Ivan and Ivan's father had completed; when I pointed out that a USB port was missing in an electrical outlet, Nate immediately went to Lowe's, purchased the correct hardware and installed it. Nate also pointed out that because we had a recent granite cabinet top installation that there could be settling that might create a very slight separation between the backsplash tile and the granite over time. He made it clear that if that were to occur, that he would come out and regrout any affected areas at no cost. Ivan's artistry as a tilest has made our kitchen beautifully habitable again. Because I was so very pleased with the workmanship and the professionalism displayed by Nate and his asscociates, I asked him to evaluate another remodeling project I had in mind. Once again he quickly explained what needed to be done and how, and had a reasonble and meticulous bid to me within days. Forte Construction Alliance has my utmost respect and my highest recommendation. Mostly, I had the feeling that I was dealing with an honest man of integrity who values competency and craftmanship and stands by his work. Ted Freemantle Lynnwood, Wash. Thursday, January 14, 2016

We recently had Mike build and install a custom kitchen cabinet. In short, the experience was terrific. Mike came over to take measurements shortly after I called him, he kept in touch throughout the project, he finished before it was promised and his price was very fair. The installation went smoothly and the cabinet is of excellent quality and looks great! We will definitely call him for bookshelves we plan to have built in our living area.

I am delighted to share our extremely positive experience in selecting Ruhlr Renovation to do a major home makeover. My wife and I had a rather major home remodeling project, involving completely an extreme makeover of two bathrooms, plus installing hardwood floors, putting on a new front door, new interior doors throughout, new trim everywhere, removing a small fireplace and installing a much nicer fireplace on a different wall, and updating all the kitchen cabinets. We are thrilled with the results. For the first week after the project was completed, we felt like we were living in a fancy 5-star hotel. We are THRILLED with the results!! The entire crew was the definition of professional at all times, responding to any requests to tweak something with no complaints and always in a timely manner. The team of Ruhlr Renovation did top-quality work for a very fair price. We are thrilled with the results and so glad we selected them to do this very complicated project. We love our newly made-over home!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
