Steve Dahlin rebuilt 2 bathrooms in our house that we had completely gutted. He did all the necessary plumbing and electrical and tiling and finished everything beautifully. He also helped with a few other things around the house (such as working on the structure to straighten out the floors which were much more level when he was done.) He was knowledgeable and conscientious - does beautiful work!

I loved working with Victor! He was very timely with his quote and initial correspondence to when his tile foreman came and did the final estimate. I loved working with his crew from start to finish! They went above and beyond to make sure the project stayed on time and on budget and I was very happy with the results! Thank you so much Victor and crew! We appreciate you so much!

We were looking for a carpenter do do a fix up for our 2 bathrooms thinking we just needed a little wall job. When he looked behind walls he had to remove 3 tile walls they were full of rotted wood full of ants. In back bathroom he took the floor up and installed wood tile flooring and replaced wall. In big bathroom he re hung new tile complete with shampoo holder with special waterproofing the boards beneath. He did an excellent job and very quickly. I would recommend him to all my family and friends. He is Cuban so he has a cute accent and great personality he will be welcome in our home forever.

Mike did a lot of contract work in our daylight basement for us when we moved into our new house. He completely remodeled our bathroom, replaced carpets in rooms, put in new paint, set up new lights, and replaced a hideous bench with something better looking. He even set up our entertainment center and replaced our court lights. We were very pleased with how the final work came out (the way the basement looks is night and day), and we would employ him again for future contract work to make improvements to our house.

I'm a semi-retired contractor that uses subcontractors on a regular basis. The project is a complicated tile shower and tub layout requiring several phases and coordination between his crew and my people. Its been a pleasure to working with IRC and I look forward to working with them in the future. They're real pros.

Our tile professional Taylor, arrived on time and went straight to work. He was also being shadowed by new trainees. I was struck by his words of wisdom to the trainee. "Take your time and do the job right so customers are happy and you don't waste their time by having to come back out to fix your mistake". Despite him training, he kept his focus on the task at hand and did a beautiful job. I would hire him to help with future tile jobs.

Joelle and travis were a pleasure to work with. My original tile idea fell through but they were more than happy to meet me at a local retailer to help pick out another design. They were on time and did a very thorough job when redoing the backsplash in my kitchen and theee bathrooms. The end product exceeded my expectations fully. I would recommend Joelle and Travis both friends and family.

I had Chris out to my house recently to redo our house. When i say redo, i mean redo. A pipe broke but it was more like a slow leak so when i had my floors rotting out that rippled into walls we decided to redo everything. We had hardwood and tiles put in and they were flawless. I dont know if i can attach pictures but if i can i will. He remodeled our bathroom, our kitchen, and our living room. Remodeled half of our study and my daughters room. I painted the whole interior to get rid of the mold. Insulation and plumbing was done by a sub he recommended but everything turned out flawless. I loved getting updates while i was at work or out of town. Toni sent me pictures of extra work that was going to be involved and asked if i wanted it performed not pressuring me into it. I also appreciate the fact that they worked weekends. I appreciated the fact that they were so courteous of my stuff, covering my clothes when they sanded the drywall in the laundry room, carefully placing my paintings where they would not get broken, etc. At one point, something was cut short, it was a really simple mistake but Chris went and got some more to replace it. I really appreciated their honesty. They did what they said they would do and on time. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone. I loved the fact that they fixed the issues and i loved the fact that they stayed within their estimate even though most of the work was hourly rated. They really increased the value of my home! Call them for repairs or remodeling...

Brian finished off my kitchen remodel with marble countertops, marble backsplash, 8' serving bar and a really nice custom spice rack. I have to start by saying this was not your average remodel. I even had to move a cabinet in the middle of the job resulting in re-templating the main countertop. (You definitely want to try to avoid this during installation.) Brian dealt with it professionally. We hand picked the marble slab. We designed as needed after the countertops were cut with what was leftover from the slab leaving minimal waste and even using old stock he had. Hand cut Chamfered corners, custom uprights, H-shaped 8' serving bar, double shelf full marble wall spice rack, shelves on top of the backsplash, rolling single cabinet island top finished on all sides, design, and redesign. Brian is really good at what he does and he actually cares that you are truly happy with what you get. He has great ideas. He listens to what you actually want. He recommends stone pertaining to customers needs and wants. Many years of experience and it shows in his work. He is always on time despite the long commute to Ballard. I wish I could post pictures because my kitchen is stunning to say the least. What I can offer is that you call Brian so he can send you pictures of my kitchen. Thank you Brian. It has been a real pleasure seeing a true craftsman at work. I would recommend you to anyone I know.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.
