This very special writer,teacher, instructor, and editor is my guru who never misleads, always exercises thoughtful response, with an incredible editor's eye to showing...not telling!...me how exactly to improve my voice, my pov, my tendency to overwrite, leading me patiently along until I can do it naturally by myself. When she pointed out to me that my childhood with my brother seemed like it was twenty years long, I knew she was telling me I could eliminate some of those tales and choose the best of those vignettes to polish. Learning under her guidance is a pleasure I look forward to, having experienced numerous on-line essay classes with her direction over small groups that bond well together. My memoir is now, in second draft, much improved but more, Sheila has led me to better understand my own story, thus helping me better understand myself and my true place in the story. I recognize this gifted teacher as a master of her craft, and above all else, is a confidence builder unmatched in my experience. I readily see that I am a better writer because she has shown me how. I have been an on-line student of Sheila's for well over a year now. Most of my writing has been poetry, but I have participated in a journalling class and sought one-on-one assistance with an essay as well. Sheila has a very sensible way of helping writers build on their own strengths. She points out areas in your work that speak to the reader and which need improvement but then encourages you to find the solution. In subsequent revisions, she takes your work and demonstrates in a very positive fashion a pathway to the finished product. I have worked with writing coaches before, Sheila is the best by far.

Sheila Bender is a great writer and a fabulous writing coach. Her Writing It Real site is a boon to writers of all kinds. She has taught writing classes at the International Association for Journal (www.IAJW.org) and has written the Writers' Add-On for LifeJournal journal software, (www.lifejournal.com).
