Less than a week before my event, I contacted Al through Thumbtack about catering my event. He was extremely quick with his responses, and what I appreciated the most is that he worked within my limited budget. Having never hired a caterer before, Al made the whole process easy and there were never any issues. The event went great, the food was delicious, and I actually had plenty of leftover food! Overall they were professional, friendly, and easy to work with. I would highly recommend PNW Catering.

Attended a family reunion in Renton, Wa a few days ago. A last minute decision was made and we had to hire a catering service to accommodate about 50 ppl with in a day! A close friend of mine recommended K&F Catering which she hired for her wedding. So, I decided to give them a shot and I'm so glad I did! Not only was the food delicious, but they made sure to have everything set up in a super clean and timely manner! Definitely recommend these guys to anyone near Renton!!

Withstyle catering has the best customer care and customer service that you can experience. The entire staff is personable and they all are happy to serve! The food is magnificent and can be tailored to your companies needs. We used them for our Holiday Party in 2012 and will be using them for our lunch and learns this year. Have referred them out to others and will continue to do so. My staff is still talking about the grits and shrimp!

Bonnie is wonderful to work with. She was highly efficient and answered all my questions immediately and in a prompt manner. Bonnie really turned it on catering my 30th birthday in October. I had friends and family visit from all over the US and they were very impressed by the array of delicious food on offer. Bonnie was great communicating with me during the planning process and helped immensely with organising the event so that is ran smoothly.

Looking for a great catering company...your search can end now & you should hire Always Cook-N. Great food, great service, great presentation, great suggestions. Everything about our experience with Always Cook-N was professional and positive. They catered the party for my parent's 60th Wedding Anniversary (about 80 guests) and helped make it a great event and lasting memory. I was too busy admiring the beautiful presentation and eating the great food and forgot to take a photo...you'll have to trust me...it was great!

George did an outstanding job of catering our company Christmas Party at our home. We were able to relax and enjoy our 50+ guests and a dozen children! The food was incredible, there was a special kid-friendly dish that the children loved. Our server/hostess Shannon not only set up the buffet artfully, but toted a tray around our home making sure the guests had delicious food! George dropped in to make sure all was well too! Frank & I had a great time, and our guests thanked us repeatedly the following week! We all received "the special treatment"! Thank you George, Shannon & Al Lago!

Mike did a great job catering a meal for my family (20 people). It was the first time both sides of the family were meeting, and we didn't want to have to stress about food. Mike brought everything by right on time with warming trays. Really made the evening go smoothly. The food was great! Mike had no trouble accommodating the gluten-free requirement. Be sure to ask about the flourless chocolate cake!!

I can honestly say I have never worked with a more talented, dedicated or caring caterer. Rose was flexible, and gave 110% to our job. Her food was second to none and her thoughtful little touches and down to earth attitude made everyone smile. I was told time and time again that it was the best food anyone had at work before and the productivity and morale boost for my team was invaluable. I would consider no one else for catering in the PNW. Tabella Di Amore provided nearly a month of catering service for my production team.

I had the pleasure of working with Courtney. I hired her as a private chef for a couple catering events. She was not only extremely easy to work with but went above and beyond to insure everything went perfectly. Courtney is one of the best chefs that I've worked with, she doesn't have the "I'm too amazing drama attitude" like most chefs. She's also extremely calm under pressure. Courtney is really great at what she does. Looking forward to working with her again.

I have attended several events catered by Good Taste Unlimited. The business is careful to listen to the specific needs and requests of the host and is very accommodating. I found the food was excellent and the presentation lovely and appetizing. All events remained on track. The caterers checked in often to ensure all was going well throughout the duration of the events. These ladies are true professionals. The scholarship event which I attended far surpassed my expectations. They deliver a fun and creative menu. Their culinary artistry is masterful.

I have been a guest at several private dinner parties catered by Jen from the Salted Fig. These parties are by invitation only and promise a culinary journey you won't forget- and they deliver! Jen's menus are creative, cohesive, and absolutely delicious. The meals always feel so personal and nurturing, like she knew exactly what I wanted to eat, even though she is cooking for 20 of us. I would highly recommend The Salted Fig for any catering needs, especially if you are looking to serve up quality, excellence, and passion with every bite!

After doing a pot luck for over 20 years for our Company's Thanksgiving lunch, we thought we would try catering. The most important thing was that it had to be ready on time. This event turned out perfect!! On time! the tables were beautiful even with candles! The servers were excellent Nick & Max very friendly and helpful, knew what they were doing and just took charge of the event. The food was delivered, set up and afterwards it was bagged up, the only minor error was that there were no take out boxes! The food was Hot and wonderfully flavorful, plenty of it for the amount of people. I had many compliments from employees and questions as to who was the Caterer. I would highly recommend "Taste of the Town" Catering and hope to have the opportunity to work with them again. This was my first time using Thumbtack and glad I did. I found "Taste of Tacoma". Thanks again Nick and Max for a job well done and of course Jimmy.

Jackson’s catering was amazing! I had a celebration for 80 people and had no idea what I wanted to serve. Jackson gave me ideas of what might be good for the function we were hosting and I let him take over the menu! The food was incredible and we had a number of guests going back for seconds in addition to asking about who catered the food. We even had one guest post on Facebook that he had an excellent dining experience and said the chef was GREAT! Jackson was extremely well organized, timely, and also flexible with our schedule. I felt very comfortable in letting him “run the show” because it was evident that he knew what he was doing and it was nice for me to be able to enjoy our guests rather than worrying about the orchestration of the meal and appetizers. His presentation was wonderful. I had described the type of atmosphere I was going to decorate the venue in and he even accommodated and worked with that in the way the food was displayed. The portions were generous and everyone left with full stomachs! I’ve hosted a number of catered events in the past and this experience was by far the best one I’ve had!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
