I started training with Tim Koffler 8 years ago, yes, EIGHT years ago. Before, I had worked with others trainers, but Tim proved to be the best by far. He introduced exercises that I did not think i'd be capable of doing. He encouraged me to go for them and I learned how to trust him and his judgement. Tim changed the routines all the time to keep me challenged, prevent boredom and see the results I wanted. I can honestly say I would not be in the shape I'm in without Tim. He is demanding and creative. He is always ready with new ideas; always willing to adjust workouts. He has an eye for my strengths and weaknesses (of which there are quite a few). Training is not always fun, but Tim knows that. He is patient when it seems necessary, supportive and very knowledgeable. A few years ago, Tim also became a Licensed Massage Therapist. That extra knowledge of the body and its functions is priceless. He can "diagnose" problems during training; give expert advice and he offers massage therapy if needed. I love the workout sessions with Tim. He pushes me harder than I would ever do myself. He is easy going and reliable and became a good friend after all these years. A great trainer like Tim is such a pleasure. It's a commitment I made to stay healthy and in shape; and it's a commitment on his side, too. I will continue training with him as long as I'm able to lift a 2-pound dumbbell!

I travel for a living and my body takes quite a beating from long hours on airplanes, sitting in airports and sleeping in different hotel rooms every few nights. A good therapeutic massage is an important part of my health care regimen. Unfortunately finding a really good massage therapist is a huge challenge. A couple of years ago, I was lucky enough to find Michael. He listens when I tell him what is going on with my body and he takes the time and care to find the right techniques to help me heal. In the past, I have wasted too many hard earned dollars getting massages that do not address the core problems. Since I have been seeing Michael, I am getting the care I need. I am big believer in spending my money wisely and I will stick with Michael as my "primary care" massage therapist as long as I live in the Seattle area. Highest rating possible!

Thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU!!! Without this service I would have never met Amanda. She got out of me something I couldn’t tell myself/admit to for the last 9 years. It’s been painful to think about answering the questions she asked, but those are feelings I never allowed myself to have. I just wanted to thank her for a genius concept and execution. Amanda has been a life changer and a freedom giver. I was initially curious as to how I would feel communicating over Skype, but it was surprisingly comfortable (especially since I could remain in my pajamas at home). Amanda was super easy to talk to. I really have no time to get away from work for traditional therapy and I’m very excited to continue with this!

As a landscaper, I'm always bending and leaning, tugging, pushing, lifting equipment and materials for long hours. Though it keeps me in shape, it also wares on my joints and muscles. So I have found getting an occasional routine massage has helped keep me active and virtually pain free so I can continue to do the best job for my clients. Delaney's understanding of body mechanics and the correct way to massage has helped me immensely. For me, he has explained a better way to work to keep my body working. Having a massage as a part of my monthly health ritual has made a huge difference.

My experience with Charice was excellent. She found tense muscles I didn't know I had. Expertly worked out the tension. Left me feeling like could float away like a feather in a breeze. Her session was very professional. No mindless prattle. She asked what areas needed special attention and went to work. Her work is deep yet relatively comfortable. The kind pain that hurts soo good. I would definitely repeat with her and recommend her highly.

This was my first experience getting a massage. I had injured my neck and wanted to do something to help loosen up the muscles. This isn't a big showy affair. Rather just a simple comfortable room. Krystall was very friendly and it shows that she enjoys helping people. I recommend giving them a try and am looking forward to scheduling another massage soon.

About

Kay is a graduate of Cortiva Institute of Massage and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association. She has been a massage therapist for over five years, specializing in athletic, rehabilitation and relaxation massage. Massage Modalities include, Deep Tissue: Deep tissue massage is best for giving attention to certain painful, stiff "trouble spots" in your body. The slow deliberate strokes and pressure focus on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep below the skin’s surface. Deep tissue massage can be quite therapeutic –relieving chronic patterns of tension and helping with muscle injuries. Myofascial Release: Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. Neuromuscular Techniques: Neuromuscular therapy is a form of soft tissue manipulation that aims to treat underlying causes of chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems. This medically-oriented form of massage addresses trigger points, circulation, nerve compression, postural issues, and biomechanical problems that can be caused by repetitive movement injuries. Pregnancy: During pregnancy, your body goes through major changes. Pregnancy massage can help with these changes by reducing stress, decreasing arm and leg swelling, and relieving muscle and joint pain. Using the specially designed massage pillows will help with positioning for this type of massage. Sports: Developed to help with muscle systems used for a particular sport, sports massage uses a variety of approaches to help athletes in training - before, during, or after sports events. Sport massage can be used to promote flexibility, help prevent injuries, or aid in healing post sports injury. Swedish: Swedish massage therapy is the most common type of massage. As the best-known type of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of the Swedish massage technique is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

  • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
  • Nutritional medicine
  • Botanical medicine
  • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
  • Hygiene
  • Counseling
  • Minor surgery
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupuncture
  • Intravenous and injection therapy
  • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

  • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
    • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
  • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
    • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
    • Do I need a referral?
    • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
    • What will the co-pay be?
    • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
  • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
