Marcella was very professional and punctual, and her easy-going personality put me at ease. She was flexible and open to changes I wanted after my hair and makeup trial, for my wedding day. On the big day, I looked great and got lots of compliments! I would highly recommend her.

Tracy was a delight in all the chaos of wedding planning & the wedding day itself. Being fairly particular about my own hair/makeup because of unique features, I was really wary when looking for a hair/makeup artist for my wedding day & though I was skeptical for awhile, Tracy was always very prompt in responding to my concerns/thoughts whether it was through email or texts. We had a scheduling issue initially for my bridal trial for hair/makeup, but she was able to communicate with me that everything would work out on the wedding day (seeing as I am an out-of-town bride) as I went flying out the door to make another wedding appointment that weekend; I felt 100x better after meeting in person & really going over what I wanted versus what also would be necessary to come out in photos. I am pretty sure Tracy & I have an email thread 100 emails long with me asking about various products, styles, & consultation just because the world of hair extensions & the like were so foreign to me (thank you sooo much for the recommendation!). Tracy will tell you how it is & help you achieve what you are looking for the best way she can & also understands the nature of a budget! She was SO helpful in this, on top of everything else. On the wedding day itself, Tracy brought an extra artist than what we agreed to, which was very helpful in terms of timing & really appreciated. We all had a blast getting ready with Tracy & her team & my bridesmaids adored her; she was very forthcoming about trying new styles out & how we could achieve looks by going through photos & playing around when necessary--it was very appreciated. All my bridesmaids & myself loved our hair & makeup (with suggestions given when we were unsure or hesitant about boldness, but reassured about our decisions especially based on photography); they were of all various styles, yet, all complemented each other as one cohesive group. I've never felt so beautiful after a hair/makeup session & am so satisfied with my entire experience with Tracy & her team; it really felt like a bunch of girlfriends getting ready for a special day, Tracy & her team included :) Thank you so much for trumping my fears of hiring hair/makeup artists, especially on a day that really counted! xx

Amar is absolutely amazing! I had a Great Gatsby theme Christmas party and she made me feel like a million bucks! I have super thick, long hair and she was able to whip it into a faux bob with such style my man and I were blown away. She went all out and exceeded any expectations I had. Thank you soooo much and I will for sure be asking you to do my future events!

I am so glad that I booked Anne to style my maid of honor, mom and I for my wedding day! Anne not only did an amazing job on hair and make-up, she was also a lot of fun to spend the day with. Anne did a great job in the trial run, and even made a special additional trip to do a hair run through with extensions. She went above any beyond and made me feel truly beautiful and confident on my big day. We had an evening wedding and my hair and make-up lasted all through the day taking photos, the ceremony, and through the reception. I danced my way out of a five-point bustle popping every button off, but my hair and make-up stayed in place! Thank you Anne for being so amazing at what you do!

Mehreen did an amazing job on my hair and makeup for a figure competition. My makeup was dramatic for the stage as I requested and it lasted all day. Despite my nerves getting the best of me that morning she was professional and calm in which helped ease my anxiety. Not only did she make me look beautiful, but provided confidence which I was lacking a bit of that morning. Again, thank you Mehreen! I would highly recommend her for anyone wanting perfection!

Talk about the woman you want to hang with on your wedding day. Geeta did an amazing job. She has a way about her that completely calms you and that is exactly what you need on your wedding day. She did a perfect job with my hair, but more than just hair, Geeta chatted me up and calmed my nerves throughout the day. During the pre trail appointment Geeta came to my home to do a practice run through. She was patient with me during the pre trail and made sure I got exactly what I wanted on the big day. Geeta is professional and very committed to her craft. Anytime I emailed her response was within two hours if not sooner. She was on time and went out of her way when we needed to add extra people. I can't thank her enough for making our wedding day perfect.

As the founder of Poplin Style Direction, personal styling for women using web based tools, it's vital that I offer my clients resources that make them look and feel their best. When Kat St. John came into my life, I knew it was a gift. I regularly recommend Kat to clients who would like their hair & makeup done for a special event. I also work with her for Poplin client photo shoots and she makes me pretty for my professional events. Kat is charming, helpful, flexible, full of knowledge and her work really speaks for itself. Hire her. You'll never look back.

I haven’t gone to the barber shop in years because I’m that paranoid about who cuts my hair. So for the past 10 years I’ve been cutting my own hair with few exceptions. However with Jen I decided to go out on a limb since it was for my buddy’s wedding. Within 20 minutes she gave me a trim and a touch up that had me looking brand new. I didn’t even tell her how I normally do my hair but she caught on quick and styled it perfectly.

She knows exactly which styles work best for each person to make them look their best, and her clients are always thrilled with the results. She has done my hair as well, and always does a great job. She always shows up on-time and takes her commitment to her clients very seriously. I can recommend her without reservation!

    About

There is only one thing more important to most women than their hair, and that is finding the perfect hairdresser. The beauty salon can be a battle of the toughest proportions, but once you've found a great hairdresser, it's hard to let her go. Many women hear of stylists through simple word of mouth -- advice from a friend on where to get a great style, and care is priceless. Extension -- Artificial or real hair that a hairdresser weaves into your existing strands to create the effect of longer locks. This style is popular among women hoping to add non-permanent length for a special occasion or women who have a difficult time growing out their hair. Extensions can be added and cut to suit whichever style you wish. Braiding, sometimes also called a weave, is a type of a human hair style. We specialize in different styles of braiding that produce different looks. Always discuss a hairstyle with a stylist before getting started. Micro Styles -- The name comes from the extremely small size of the braid. The stylist weaves human hair extensions that can be the same or different colors into the natural hair. This style is good for adding length to short hair and many accessories, such as pins can be added to the hair. Hair Extensions -- These are hair accessories that are made from actual human hair as well as synthetic materials. They are used to lengthen natural hair. Various options abound, including clip-in, sewn and weaved extensions. Flat Twist -- This is a style where the hair is twisted against the scalp and braided. The overall look is thicker than an average braid. Cornrow -- This is somewhat similar style to the flat twist, in that the hair is braided against the scalp; however, in the cornrow style, the hair is kept in straight lines and is not twisted.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

    What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.

    What is a seamless extension?

A seamless hair extension is a type of clip-on hair extension. The extension hair is called the weft. Near the top of the weft, a metal clip mounted to the weft on a silicone base is used to attach the extension to your natural hair. In a traditional clip-on extension, the base that attaches the metal clip to the weft is fabric.

People may prefer seamless extensions due to their lower profile; the silicone can be up to 50 percent thinner than the fabric, making the extension appear more natural — and, therefore, seamless. Seamless extensions usually can be washed (although you shouldn’t keep them submerged for more than 20 seconds) and heat-styled on lower heat settings. You can gently brush seamless hair extensions as well as have them dyed a darker color by a trained professional.

How much do hair extensions cost?

Hair extensions are synthetic or real human hair integrations that add volume and length to your hair. Hairstylists are trained in different techniques to attach extensions to your hair. The cost of extensions can vary greatly depending on the technique used to apply the hair, as well as the type of hair you select. Synthetic hair is typically the least expensive, human hair is next on the pricing scale, remy hair is next, and what is called “virgin” human hair is generally the most sought-after and most expensive. Remy hair signifies that all the cuticles are intact and running in the same direction, making for smoother hair extensions in the long term. Hair is deemed virgin when all the hair is from one donor and has never undergone any chemical processing. Hair prices will vary from company to company; here are some examples of hair from online retailers.

    • Virgin strands (25 strands weighing approximately 1 gram each) for hot fusion application: $44 per bundle.
    • Virgin hair weave (approximately 4 ounces per package): $149 each.

Here are some sample application costs from hairstylists.

    • Full sew-in: $175-$200 or more.
    • Partial sew-in: $125 or more.
    • Micro-link weft extensions: $300 or more.
    • Full-bonded extensions: $75 or more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
