David is probably one of the nicest and genuine people we've had the pleasure of working with since moving to the PNW. My wife and I live in a industrial loft space that some would describe as challenging if they weren't trained or had an eye for design. There's limited storage spaces (two closets), low amounts of provided lighting (4 light fixtures for 1100 sq ft two-floors), and has lots of cement (i.e.- walls, floors, etc). This was challenging for my wife and I, because our home prior to moving to Seattle was setup in a traditional modern deco fashion and had many features already installed and built in. David took our space-- and over the course of 5 months-- made our space feel warm, practical, and inviting while still maintaining the industrial look that I was seeking. He added color and lighting to key areas within the space that made the space feel welcoming and bigger. He also changed our upstairs loft area to make it feel as though we have several rooms within the one space. I have recommended his work to several of my co-workers since working with him. I would hire him again for my interior design needs. Thanks again, David!

What a difference it made. The furniture is clean, simple and modern. She put nice pictures on the wall and small decorations where needed. The house looks much better now and we have had several compliments on it. It has only been on the market for a few days.

We were so lucky to have found Tristan on extremely short notice to stage our home before we listed it for sale. She responded promptly to all my emails, was very flexible with what we wanted done and was able to provide us with the services we needed for the budget we had. Most importantly, Tristan had a wonderful eye for furniture placement and practical decorating sense for staging purposes. We wanted to use our own furniture and belongings with only minimal supplementing of staging furniture/accessories (which she is able to provide). She came over and walked us through every room of our house and helped us place and decorate down to the very last detail. She was fun and easy to work with and made the whole process very enjoyable. Needless to say, our house sold less than a week later and we heard that there were multiple groups that asked who our stager was during the Open House. I am looking forward to using her again, this time for her interior design skills in our next home!

I recently hired LuLu from StyledStaging.com to do some light redecorating and decluttering at my home. I was very happy with the service she provided. My home looked so much better after LuLu rearranged my furniture, moved several, works of art around and added some accent pieces. She also helped me declutter some areas in the living room which had been the victim of my procrastination for several years. I love the way the place looks now and plan on having her back again to help in some of the other rooms! Thank you and best regards, Greg R.

Don't wait to contact Heather - I had a small project that was difficult for my husband and I to figure out and she made it so EASY! We love her - she is fun to work with and has really good ideas. This is the first time I've used an Interior Designer and I don't know why I waited this long. It's made a world of difference and our project is just getting underway. Heather designed a new fireplace for us with window seating on both sides and even put us in touch with a great contractor to do the work. Everyone she has sent me to has been prompt and helpful. We will be sure to use her in the future for other projects. Thanks Heather!

We had fine design help us with a small kitchen remodel and flooring throughout a couple rooms in our home. We were very happy with the outcome! Taylor and his guys are very professional and quick to respond. Taylor is super handy with everything and we are consistently using him for other home improvements (i.e wood mantel installation) and will use him in the near future for our master bathroom remodel and quartz installation. Great price range and good quality. Only improvements for Taylor and his team would be cleaning up daily after work and completing on time, our project was finished a few days late. We highly recommend!

Nancy and Silver Lining Interior Design did a great job in terms of quality and willingness to stage with short notice! During the consultation we discussed the positives and negatives of the property and how to address them. I was very pleased with the staging results! With thoughtful selection and placement of furniture, accessories and artwork she was able to highlight the positive features and tie together the variety of paint colors throughout this home. Nancy’s interior design experience allowed her to accomplish this, which may have challenged others. (There were 4 different colors on the first floor, 3 on the second.) Silver Lining Interior Design took care of the home while staging, respects others, and the property. I met with Nancy on Friday afternoon for a consultation and the stage was complete for my open house the following Sunday! I received multiple offers at the first open house! Thank you Nancy!

I hired Plume Staging for a house in Shoreline that my company put on the market this week. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Amy, she was very accommodating and friendly. She even agreed to work the day after Thanksgiving, which says a lot about their service! Most of the other staging companies I had spoken to said it would take them 3-4 days to stage but Amy did it in a day. Also, her design aesthetic is spot on, she used the right colors to make the house really pop. She even gave me good suggestions on interior paint colors that I can use on my future remodels. Looking forward to working with them again!

We discovered Martina / Design Stage through Yelp! early in 2013. Our small 1950's house needed some adjustments to accommodate how we, a family of four & dog, live. After three years of ownership we were ready, particularly since we needed to get our house appraised for a refi. As home improvement projects go, our most glaring need was landscaping, a bizarre layout of maze-like rotting fences, overgrowth and weeds everywhere. Regrettably, most of our budget had to be used for landscaping so anything interior had to be done on a thin budget. Upfront, I explained the circumstances to Martina. I also mentioned that this was our third remodel and we could comfortably work in an unstructured way. For instance, minimal design illustrations and face-to-face meetings to review materials, etc. I would not recommend this for most people. Design Stage's approach allows you at adjust the "sweat equity" meter to accommodate your budget. Note that if we are fortunate enough to work with Design Stage in the future, we will definitely move out of the way as much as possible because Martina, I believe, can work small miracles. We had one very challenging area trying to be the house entry, coat closet, my office and guest area. I had spent many, many hours drawing up ideas and had presented them to Martina. She delicately placed them aside and presented a plan that was mind-blowing. We immediately got our contractors busy to implement her ideas. The end product was beyond anything we could have imagined. Granted, there's still a lot we could do to improve the interior. But Martina was able to take the resources we had available, fully consider our budget and assemble it all in such a way to absolutely maximize the potential. We loved our house the moment we moved in. But Martina helped really make it ours and we feel it every time we step through the door.

I recently bought a new condo in Seattle and wanted a modern look but had no idea where to begin until I met Lisa. She was very knowledgeable, professional, and easy to work with and right from the get go she was enthusiastic and hard working always going the extra mile to get things done. She was very perceptive in her design instincts regarding the clean modern look I was looking for and went beyond my expectations in her ability to manifest the style I was trying to conceptualize. I especially liked the fact that she had no hesitation in looking for items outside the store she was working at at that time to achieve the perfect look. If you are looking for an interior designer I highly recommend that you contact her.

Interior design is not my strength and I was lost. Fortunately, I found Alison on Thumbtack. She walked me through the process, did what I asked her to do (including pushing me out of my comfort zone) and changed my new construction empty house into my home. I would highlight her fee structure which removed the conflicts of interest that plague this industry, and her practicality in finding more expensive furnishings where it made sense and some spectacular work on a budget where it didn't make sense to spend a lot. Thanks A!

I hired Nabila to help me and my husband figure out what's the best way to furnish our big empty living room. We loved working with her so much, we are now considering her to help us design our next project to remodel the kitchen. Nabila is easy to talk to, she listens to us, and she adapts to the way we live and what we need and want. She was working so fast and hard to finish the design and after that to go with me for all the shopping we need to finish this project. She is affordable and professional. I highly recommend La Vanesse Design & Staging for interior design.

My home was designed by Helena Hoyte Bierly Interior designer and principal at Wingpoint Design LLC on Bainbridge Island WA. The flow of the house works well for our family with a highly functional and livable floorplan. The house is light and airy with large windows; it is well situated on the lot allowing maximum views and sun. The house has a contemporary feel with high ceilings, high end fixtures, wonderful stonework and great lighting. We highly recommend Helena's work.

She has designed and built my home from the foundation to façade, also she has done its interior design. She is quite a genius woman who always wanted to keep a high level of responsibility and management through the entire project. More importantly, she enjoys an outstanding inherent creativity and innovation in her work as an Architect in a way that she is able to design in the best expression based on your preferences. All in one, I highly recommend her if you would like to get your project designed desirably and created perfectly.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

          What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

          • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
          • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
          • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
          • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

          • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
          • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
            • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
          • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
            • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
          • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
          • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

          • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
          • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
          • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
          • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
