Alex and his crew did an excellent job installing lawn edging and repairing my large yard (aerating, seeding and mulch). He is hard working, reliable and very reasonable price. Anxiously awaiting the new grass to grow.

Marcus and his crew did a phenomenal job wheelbarrowing 9 yards of peagravel from my driveway to the back of my garden which was about 200 feet away spread it out evenly Consistent thickness throughout the gravel and cleaned up the project. They even went a little bit above and beyond by helping out with landscape fabric and some edging. I would definitely use him again.

The fence installation was done quickly and looks great. The team was friendly and open to doing some extra yard work on the spot. And the pricing was excellent. Only problem I had with them was that they left a couple old tools and haven't been by to pick them up in almost 2 weeks.

We are waiting for the siding installers to return and finish painting the trim. Then we will call PPG to return our front landscaping to its former excellent condition, as well as adding landscape border to the project. These guys are super great!

We hired these guys for just installing the sprinkler system, but the professional way in which Saul gave us the quote for our complete backyard redo, we totally loved it! He was very professional, very methodical, and very rightly priced. His guys removed our old rusting deck, Saul paved our entire backyard and did the grass cover on it, in addition to installing the sprinkler system! We love these guys so much, we are rehiring them for another project!

We needed sod installed very quickly and was referred to this company, they came out right away and provided a fair estimate. Work began quickly and stayed right on schedule, it is a day before we needed the job complete and it looks amazing! The attention to detail shows and they cleaned up everyday! Very respectful and courteous workers! Highly recommend!!

We have worked with Matt for the last two summers, and will tackle the third and final phase of our project this summer, 2016. Matt and his crew installed a stone path with steps down to our back gate, and a stone staircase up a steep slope from our back yard to our front, on the side of our house. The design included planting beds and lighting. MLG selected plantings for the pathway, and made recommendations for future plantings. Matt also built three garden boxes for our yard, out of sturdy and beautiful juniper. We so appreciated Matt working within our budget, and helping us break up our project into workable phases. We are excited to watch as the plantings fill in. This summer will see the design and installation of a new back gate, and more landscaping. It has been a pleasure to work with Matt and his crew. They were timely, worked hard, and cleaned up as they went. Matt was easy to get hold of, and always responsive. A great experience!

I have been involved with Sully’s Landscaping on several projects and can give her a hearty positive recommendation. She has expertise in all aspects of landscaping. She designed and installed both hardscape and soft scape using low maintenance plants and now my yard bursts with color! Sully handled my job perfectly from start to finish and always kept on budget. She is very caring and professional. Her communication was excellent before, during and at job completion. She was very efficient and a hard worker. She is a pleasure to work with and I would definitely engage her services again.

Richard Synder of Snyder Landscape has worked with me for 12 years installing patios, rock retaining walls, garden features such as waterfalls and ponds as well as planting and mulching gardens. Richard is extremely knowledgeable, honest and stands 100% behind his work. I use Richard because of his attention to detail. As a garden professional myself, it is important that my clients completely trust my subcontractors and that my subcontractors only do the highest quality of work. I have never been disappointed in any project Richard has done for me or one of my clients. He is thorough and thoughtful. He can be counted on to keep on schedule and is a very hard worker and has a large network of suppliers and colleagues in the field. He has an impeccable eye and is a professional with the highest integrity.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

        • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
        • Read online reviews of client experiences.
        • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
        • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
        • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
