We were super lucky in finding Stephanie and Paul. They catered our wedding in an extraordinary way and they took care of everything!. They guided us since the beginning until the end with every doubt we had. They help us to select the menu for our budget not sacrificing the essentials for us and having a big variety of flavors. Instead of restrictions like others catering companies, they gave us more options on the menu with really affordable prices. We worked with them in a pretty easy way. Stephanie answered every email and always gave to me a lot of options in every question. They worked super professionally. The service and food were superb!. We received a lot of compliments about the amazing taste of the dinner. Everyone were delighted with the crab cakes, the stuffed portobello and the hazelnut crusted salmon. We highly recommend them. They had the best menu options for the prices, great customer service. And they can offer the full service and saving you extra vendors and stress.

Chantel catered for our wedding on Christmas Day! During our planning, she responded immediately to all of our questions and concerns. We could not believe the variety of food that was available on her menu for the price per person that we had planned--it seemed too good to be true. However, we can honestly say that the food was simply AMAZING!! Food for 25 people was set up well ahead of our ceremony so that our guests could enjoy her incredibly delicious appetizers. The main course consisted of salads, side dishes, and three main entrees. Our guests were very impressed with the variety and flavors offered by Chantel's cooking; in fact, several people requested her contact info so they could use her catering services. Cleanup was effortless and timely. You will not go wrong in choosing Chantel and Thyme Well Spent Catering as your next caterer!

Attended a family reunion in Renton, Wa a few days ago. A last minute decision was made and we had to hire a catering service to accommodate about 50 ppl with in a day! A close friend of mine recommended K&F Catering which she hired for her wedding. So, I decided to give them a shot and I'm so glad I did! Not only was the food delicious, but they made sure to have everything set up in a super clean and timely manner! Definitely recommend these guys to anyone near Renton!!

I recently hired Island girl catering to cater my wedding in Stanwood WA. Not only was my food amazing (we ordered prime rib, Rosemary chicken, garlic potatoes, strawberry walnut salad and rolls) but Carol was such good company. I could not have pulled this thing together without her. She helped me with timelines and gave examples to help me with planning. She also reminded me to not forget the little things. And when I did forget stuff (like ice) she provided it for me last minute. I could not thank her enough. She did so much for me on my wedding day, she was a huge part in making this thing happen and help make my wedding day special. I also let her pick out the two types of beer that we had and it was a huge hit! If you're looking for a catering company that will not only treat you like a client but a friend, you will want to hire Carol and her team.

Chef Emme Catering Co. catered a beautiful office Thanksgiving lunch for us in Downtown Seattle. It was very quick and easy to book the services and finalize a menu and required services. They were on time and efficient setting up. Most importantly, the food was the best catered food we've all tasted! We will be using Chef Emme again for our catering needs and recommend their services to anyone wanting quality service and food.

Dogfather Catering provided a hot meal, made to order, with several choices, to feed a crowd of 125 hungry construction workers in a little over an hour. The gourmet hotdogs were a bit hit! Being a vegetarian, I don't normally enjoy these events, but Stephen, the Dogfather, provides a vegetarian sausage that was really tasty! Stephen arrived a couple of hours early to set up his "kitchen" and confer with me about our plan. His trailer takes up very little space, so it fit easily into the limited space in our trailer compound at our project site. Stephen is very friendly and aims to please. I hope to have him return for another event soon.

Mike did a great job catering a meal for my family (20 people). It was the first time both sides of the family were meeting, and we didn't want to have to stress about food. Mike brought everything by right on time with warming trays. Really made the evening go smoothly. The food was great! Mike had no trouble accommodating the gluten-free requirement. Be sure to ask about the flourless chocolate cake!!

“Our company hired Joy Max Catering to provide a traditional holiday meal for our 2013 Annual Employee Holiday Luncheon. There was more than enough delicious food to go around for the 100 employees in attendance, and everyone was very pleased with the quality of their meals. The delivery timing was spot on, and everything was still piping hot despite the 30-45 minute drive to our somewhat remote location. Joy’s prices were very reasonable, and she was more than agreeable to work with. Joy was always willing to adapt to our needs, and was also capable of providing for last minute additions to our head count, which was much appreciated. We would definitely choose Joy again for future company events. Thanks Joy!”

We love Patty's food as well as her customer service! She works with us to come up with monthly meal plans that suit our dietary needs and desires and our busy schedule. It's amazing how much time she saves us, freeing us up to focus on work and leisure :) Patty is talented and versatile and has great professional integrity. She always provides a range of choices that cover different cooking styles, and she tracks our favorite dishes while each month suggesting something new that she is excited to make for us. She discusses every aspect of the pricing with us and makes sure that we love every dish that we order from her. Patty is also very well-organized, something that has impressed us since the beginning. She is a great communicator and is very flexible with our complicated schedule. We are lucky to have found her!

We have been ordering paleo meals and they all taste AMAZING! We have also used their catering service twice now for two different events. They both turned out fantastic!

Gwen, you are an amazing caterer! Thank you! Yellow Bird Catering catered a buffet for my wedding reception and everything worked out perfectly. I was having a difficult time finding a caterer that was reasonable and willing to work with me. I kept getting frustrated by caterers by their lack of flexibility to get the meal we were wanting. That all changed when I talked with Gwen. She was friendly, understanding and willing to work with me. Her prices were reasonable and as soon as I said "wedding" she didn't charge her demeanor like the other caterers did. My reception had 200 guests and almost everyone of them complemented the buffet. I don't know how else to explain how satisfied I was...great food, great customer service, and reception dinner that went off without a hitch. I am so thankful I found Yellow Bird Catering!

When it came to food for our wedding, that was the part my husband wanted to choose. He is a chef, so it really meant a lot to him that our menu was phenomenal. After venue searching at resorts, we became discouraged with their preset menus with typical wedding food. We then decided to go with a venue where we could hire a caterer. Once the venue manager found out my husband's occupation, she immediately referred us to Twist Catering, stating they were for "foodies." We live here locally, so we were able to visit them for a tasting. It was out of this world. Chef Joel prepared everything for us, as discussed each menu item with us. We met with him numerous times, he helped me with the set up of everything, suggestions, he was there every step of the way for us during the wedding planning process. He even stopped by at the wedding to check on us. And the final menu chosen for the wedding was insane. I'm at the age where a lot of my friends are getting married, as well as attending weddings & all of the guests commented on how exceptional the food was. My husband & I have both worked in restaurants for many years, and know good service can be difficult to find. The food was delivered promptly, and the servers & bartenders were on point. They constantly checked on myself, as well as my husband & his family to keep our drinks full. Between the food, the exceptional service, & the kind treatment we received, it was truly memorable.

She was located at the WIAA meet from Thurs-Sat and I finally got to taste her awesome food on Saturday. I got her Lizzie's Yakisoba and it was wonderful. Topped with a couple of savory buffalo wings. Glad I stopped in. Plus the Seahawks red bull drink was to die for. Will definitely find her again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
      • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
      • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
      • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
