Sylvia's love for dogs is well beyond words. Sylvia is an extremely knowledgeable, professional dog trainer with vast experience. She quickly identified at least one of our dogs behaviour needs when she was greeted at our gate with two dogs barking their heads off. She was correct. Unwanted barking was one of the behavior we were looking for guidance to silence. Additionally, with the ability to walk our dogs without pulling. Sylvia provided us with excellent practical hands on training, resources, advice and support. Amazing to see how much was covered during this one hour session. She certainly left us on her first visit the confidence of achieving desired results. Sylvia has an incredible passionate way of how she relates to people and dogs--motivates dogs and owners to alter the dogs and human behaviors with a goal of achieving a happy, healthier dogs and owners. We have implemented her guidance and seeing small results already. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with Sylvia during this journey.

Thank you Martha! I was very hesitant about getting a trainer, only because it is a little bit of a financial commitment and I think a lot of us think that we can do things ourselves, but I was really having a hard time with one of my dogs and decided that it was worth it to try a trainer. She was great. She was very responsive and attentive before I even hired her, and even more so after. She works with you to make sure you get what you want/need out of the session. She met my two dogs and helped me better understand why they were misbehaving and how I could make them better. She listened to all my concerns and addressed all of them, and best of all once she works with you, you can call her anytime for additional help which is very reassuring. On a side note she is also very fair, and if money is a concern she can definitely work with you to try to keep the time frame within your budget which was very appreciated. If you are looking for a dog trainer, I definitely recommend Martha!

Ada was prompt in responding to my initial request for dog trainers near my home and after discussing what needs to be accomplished explained what she believed would be necessary and how much it would cost giving me the opportunity to talk it over with my daughter (the dog's real owner) who will get back with me tomorrow about the degree of commitment to help pay for the service. Ada kindly accepted the delay and pleasantly offered the suggestion that if it didn't work out just now she would be happy to help whenever we were ready. So, I already know we are going to hire her because she is so flexible and considerate regarding our circumstances and needs.

Cindy Wilson is an excellent dog trainer. She even trained my dog to ring the bill to let me know when he wants to go out. I still call her till this day when I have dog training questions. Even though she's now in another state. I highly recommend her services.

We love Zoom Room! The staff are amazing, especially Olivia at the front desk! The owner Cheryl is truly a gifted dog trainer and an all-around awesome person. Zoom Room offers numerous classes and you will find no trainer more dedicated to you and your pup than Cheryl; she has taught me so much about being a good handler and my dog Xedo loves her. Xedo has excelled at Agility under her awesome direction and insight. Even now, while he is recovering from ACL surgery, Cheryl has been so awesome, checking on him and offering ideas and encouragement. Cheryl is going to help us build strength in his knee, by utilizing one of her class specialties, “Puplates”! Best of all Zoom Room is a community gathering place where like-minded, fun loving dog owners and their awesome pups can meet up; whether it’s for "Agility League Night" (a friendly competition for pups and their peeps!) or celebrating while playing games and enjoying lite fare. Xedo even had his 6th birthday party at Zoom Room! Boy was that fun!! We have so many favorite events at Zoom Room it's hard to name them all! Cheryl is so awesome at putting together parties to celebrate every new season, including holiday photos shoots for pups and their owners. There is no better training studio around! If you are looking for a great community to connect with while learning tons about training your dog and having lots of fun while doing it, look no further! Zoom Room is perfect!

We have been working with April for a little over a month to train our rescue dog Milo. April is easy to work with and our dog responds positively to her. I like how she has goals for us to work on, but also addresses any issues we have with Milo during the week. I also appreciate that she comes to our house, so we can work on issues specific to our environment. I highly recommend April if you are looking for a dog (or people) trainer.

So very thankful for Alex and his knowledge about what was best for my dog Lucy. He gave me really workable, sound advice. Lucy is totally responding to his directions. I feel he gave us both tactics to go forward with. Given Lucy, is a high attention dog I am sure we will need him to come back!

In the past 15 years we have used several dog trainers and Thomas is by far the most knowledgable in terms of understanding dog psychology. He takes a training approach much like the parenting approach that I take with my children. The dogs are able to understand what you want from them without the need to be domineering or requiring any type of negative reinforcement. He has been able to answer and address all of my questions/issues and explain a solution in a very concise and pragmatic way!

We recently adopted our dog and noticed some behavior issues resulting from previous abuse. The rescue organization recommended that we contact Shawna for advice. I told Shawna the problems we were experiencing and she gave me some suggestions over the phone. We set up an appointment for her to meet our new dog and evaluate the situation. After our first meeting it was clear that she could help us. She was able to identify the cause of the behavior we were dealing with and gave us effective tips to help us deal with his triggers and build his confidence so that he could feel safe. The training sessions that we have had so far have shown remarkable results. Our dog is more relaxed and looks forward to his training every day. He is happy to show off his skills to Shawna at his next session with her. Shawna has a very common sense approach to training and her advise if followed provides an opportunity for any dog to be successful. My husband and I believe in giving rescue dogs a home whenever possible and if we adopt another dog in the future Shawna will be the first call we make to help us navigate the unknown of our new pet's history. I cannot say enough good things about our experience dealing with her.

Melinda is incredible! I think our pets are hoping we will travel again soon so that they can hang out with her! She is very diligent, detailed, and absolutely loves animals. She really treated our older cat and dog like they were her own. I cannot recommend her highly enough and it gave us great piece of mind that our pets and home would be well cared for while we were gone.

Carol at Northwest Dog Retreat is truly exceptional. I adopted a small dog from an animal shelter and was extremely overwhelmed in the beginning when I first began to discover some of his behavioral issues. As a first time dog owner, I was unsure how to deal with his fears and also my own. I knew I was not equipped to train a dog with fears and aggressions on my own and I was thankful to have been able to find Carol at Northwest Dog Retreat. Carol really took the time to listen to me and my concerns, and with her knowledge, help and guidance, Bruno has totally turned around and is more outgoing and expressive than ever. She is caring, intuitive and truly has a special way with animals. She has given me tools, tips and support through out the process and I am so grateful to have met her! Not only does she help with behavioral training in her own home and well as public arenas, she has boarding and the retreat location is beautiful! Plenty of space for dogs to run and play and enjoy. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. Her true passion sets her apart from the others. Thank you Carol!

Janelle responded to my call right away. She came out the same day as I had to separate my dogs with the issue I was having. She has years of experience and it shows. As soon as she walked through the gate my dogs knew she was in charge. She thoroughly explained what the issue was and how to correct it. My dogs are now super happy together. We are following all the advise she has given us. I am so Thankful that I found her. I would highly recommend Janelle to anyone with any type of dog training .

I am 110% satisfied with Vivians care of my pets while I was on vacation! She was courteous, punctual, reliable, obviously knowledgeable and just a real sweetheart! My pups and I liked her immediately! She even got my "shy" dog to actually leave the yard and go for a walk! I haven't been able to get her to willingly do that! Thank you, Vivian! She sent me periodic status updates and pictures! When I got home she took time to "educate" me on some techniques for continuing the training she had done with my shy dog and she will be coming back for further training sessions! I am grateful I found Vivian and will highly recommend her to friends and family! Thank you Vivian from me and Autumn, and Summer, and Dinah!

Recently I had the bad luck of both my standing pet sitters moving out of Seattle. I hunted quite a bit for a new pet sitter and came across Morgan from Pit Stop. It's always hard to leave your dogs in the care of someone new when you go on trips, but upon meeting Morgan and seeing her interact with my two pit bulls, I knew she was a perfect fit for us. Morgan took excellent care of them for the long weekend we were away! She sent 2+ daily texts with pics of my pups during her time with them, during morning and evening stays, as well as their midday walks, which I appreciated immensely. She eased my mind while I was away knowing they were in good hands, and I came home to happy and well taken care of dogs. It was great to find a trusting pet sitter again and will be using Morgan in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
