Introduction: ***MINIMUM LESSON LENGTH: 1 HOUR ONLING/2 HOURS IN PERSON. ***STUDENTS OVER 15 YEARS OLD ONLY. ***VIRTUAL LESSONS ONLY DURING COVID. I am a graduate of the Chinese Literature department of National Taiwan University and have an MA in History of Art from the University of York. I have 15+ years of experience teaching Mandarin and have completed a Teaching Chinese as a Second Language Certification. My teaching experience includes teaching Mandarin in Taiwan, Australia, and the US. My students include all ages, learning purposes and nationalities. I have taught elementary school, high school, Taipei America School (they were ABC-American born Chinese), college and adult students. In addition, I have assisted a Korea PhD student to complete his academic postdoctoral research dissertation in Chinese. I especially focus on teaching motivated and passionate learners. I have long had an interest in creative work and received a few literature awards, and have also had poems, prose, and short stories published in newspapers and magazines. As a Chinese teacher, I care about each student's unique needs and listen to them patiently. I prefer to know students’ ability of Chinese first. Then I get a direction to teach them in accordance with their aptitude. For example, some students need foundation training, others are more advanced. I usually spend a lot of time to design different lessons and write handouts to fit my students’ learning style and goals. Also, I have a strong and abiding interest in Chinese language and literature. For this reason, I pay close attention to Chinese vocabulary and grammar. I can also distinguish between similar words and phrases, how to use them correctly and clearly. Since a language is highly relative to its culture, it is difficult to learn it without knowing cultural context. I enjoy sharing my knowledge of Chinese literature, history, culture, and philosophy with my students and help them fully understand every aspect of the language. Finally, I know both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. I can also teach classical and modern Chinese, such as Chinese writing, listening, speaking, reading, daily conversation, idioms, poetry, and literary works.

Vanya is an extremely qualified teacher and anybody can benefit from her tutelage. She is extraordinarily flexible and focuses her teaching on what the student needs in the order that they need it. She is well spoken, knowledgeable, and most of all very, very patient with the extreme difficulty of the language.
