I had seen Bree’s work on Facebook when a longtime friend had some pictures done for her boyfriend. My friend looked beautiful, and I wondered if my hubby would be interested in me taking any pics as a present for his big 4-0. I showed him Bree’s photos and he was all in. We looked at other photographers and their work, and we agreed Bree’s work was definitely the right style for us. I didn’t need to look like an art piece, heck, if I turned out half as gorgeous as my friend, it would all be okay by me! So I picked up the phone on a Saturday afternoon and talked to Bree. Working with Bree was easy. In one phone call I was set up for a session with so many choices I thought my head would spin. While I had the option of choosing an outfit from her extensive collection with lots of size range, I ended up using an outfit from home with one small missing piece. I could not find shoes I liked, and here was Bree to the rescue with not only one, but 3 pairs of shoes to choose the right pair! My makeup made me look at least 10 years younger, my hair was beautiful, and the Mimosas divine! Bree is really good at getting to know you in a short period of time so you are comfortable and opens up her home studio in an absolutely welcoming way. She’s good at her job, and has great passion for showing her subject in a way that is visually striking, and yet very true to the personality of the person on the other end of the camera. I was apprehensive, being in the midst of a weight loss journey, and not being as confident at photographing well, and Bree put me at ease. The only complaint I had was that I smiled so much I should have brought Vaseline for my teeth like a supermodel. :-) Then we got the images. I was so beautiful. Shames me to say I forgot I could look so beautiful. I don’t think my husband has skipped looking at the photos at least once a day since we got them back! This was a total game changer for my self confidence and I would do it again in a minute- and then do it again!

I hired Shawn Nichols for a corporate event which took place in late February 2016. Shawn definitely deserves all five (if I could give any more, I would) stars and a glowing review! I will admit I was hesitant to hire someone off Thumbtack – it was my first experience using Thumbtack and I didn’t quite know what to expect – but he blew it out of the park, completely delivered and really exceeded any of my expectations, with his work for this event! Shawn is going places with his photography, professionalism and strong work ethic and I look forward to following his career. Part of me hates to write such a great review for my own selfish reasons – I want him for all of our events! :] Shawn was hired for our annual corporate Employee Appreciation Event, which I fully planned (and attended) for the first year since starting with my company. One of the things I had noticed about previous years’ events was the lack of good photography. I had seen previous years’ photos and thought they really left something to be desired. When I put out a bid on Thumbtack looking for photographers, Shawn’s website and artwork jumped out immediately, I believed he could deliver. I spoke with him first on the phone and let him know what I was looking for – more artistic shots – and his time, thoroughness and genuine excitement was clearly evident from our phone call. It seemed like he was exactly who I was looking for. About a month before the event, I called Shawn and asked him if he could meet me for coffee that week, to have about a fifteen minute meeting to discuss some items for the party. He went out of his way (literally) to be flexible to my schedule and that fifteen minute meeting turned in to over an hour of his time sitting in Starbucks and talking Photography. From there, he then drove with me to Joann Fabrics to hand-select a backdrop for the event that would photograph well and tailored to my vision. This whole afternoon he spent meeting with me and shopping for photography backgrounds was unpaid. He didn’t have to do these extra things, he just did – he was really going above and beyond before the event even took place! Fast forward to the day of the event. Shawn and his two assistants (oh yeah – he brought two additional photographers to help him capture the night. I really felt we got a huge deal here because for the price of one photographer, we really got three! This was just another way Shawn went out of his way to ensure our event success) came a few hours early to set up one of our photography station backgrounds, and the get shots of a list of things before the event started. Leading up to the event, Shawn was incredible thorough in his communications; answering phone calls and emails quickly and in detail. He even thought of details I hadn’t and prompted me to provide a list of shots I wanted to get prior to the event, during the event, asked for an event timeline and for specific individuals whom he and his assistants should be aware of. I really appreciated those questions in retrospect, as I think they really added to the coverage of the event, and with the laundry list of to-dos I had leading up to the party, I appreciated him taking the time and initiative to look out for our ultimate priorities – photography and otherwise. Shawn and his assistants Rachel and Jeremiah were extremely professional, gracious, thoughtful to guests and efficient. They not only succeeded in my hopes for an hour of couple photos as guests arrived, then roaming event coverage; all three of them really went above and beyond to make sure every shot on that shot list was completed. Our guests loved having the backdrop couple photos, and I loved having all three of them there photographing – it was amazing to get the extra coverage during that couple photo hour that I didn’t know we would have! Shawn let me know the timeline of when I should expect photos delivered back, as the party wrapped up that night, but delivered a few days earlier. He met every goal I had with the photography aspect of the event. I told him several times that he was the easiest/best/nicest/most efficient vendor or staff I had working on our event, and I really do mean that. The photos back to me were in several files, so easy to open and access, and ranked by him in order of importance (for me). His love of photography and art is intrinsic and clear in his work. His photographs are beautiful and really highlighted the event for me, my company and so many of our guests. I look forward to having – and using – these photographs for years to come! During the time I was planning the event, and had been working with Shawn, I saw another opportunity come up within my company which I suggested Shawn, and he was hired for. Those pictures came back prior to our event, and when I saw those beautiful photos, I knew i was going to be happy with his work on the event. I can’t say enough great things about Shawn Nichols. You are lucky if you get the opportunity to hire him for any event, wedding, party, or general photography needs. Shawn will make you feel like you are his only client, and will really take your vision and bring it to life. He is so genuine and charismatic and it is wonderful to see someone excel at something they love, and do so well! I look forward to working with Shawn (and hopefully Rachel and Jeremiah too!) on any future business, event or personal photography needs I have!

Dan was extremely proffessional, on time and did a wonderful job capturing all the important moments of my wedding. The dvd's turned out even better than I expected. I really like how he had part of it on black and white then back to color. My husband sang his vowls and Dan captured his amazing voice on our dvd, its like we were back at the wedding. He worked really well with my photographer and they never got in each others way. I look forward to working with Dan again in the future. Diana

There are photographers everywhere nowadays. It seems like anyone can go out and buy a fancy camera and study some poses and suddenly, they are a photographer. But what most photographers lack is a true artistic eye for detail, emotion and unique style that is true to their clients. Kyle is not only professional and great to work with, but he brings an experienced and detailed perspective that most other photographers cannot and do not offer. My family hired Kyle to take photos at our latest family reunion, and we were not disappointed. He did an amazing job capturing candid moments that showcased the joy, love and laughter within my family. My grandmother just turned 90 and we never know when our last gathering with her will be. But I feel really grateful knowing that Kyle helped us capture beautiful memories with her that look authentic and true to us. I will definitely be hiring Kyle again for other photography services!

We were thrilled with the pictures from Jason Kim Photography! He was easy to work with, responded quickly and agreed to meet us in our preferred location. He clearly loves his work and his enjoyment was infectious - my son reluctantly agreed to getting senior pictures taken but ended up really enjoying the process and the results. My husband and I are amateur photographers but were disappointed with our own results when trying to photograph our son, so we're so glad we decided to work with Jason. We never would have able to get such amazing results; we can take good pictures but nothing like what Jason was able to produce. And I felt like the pictures we received were better than a lot of my friends who spent much more. He's a pleasure to work with, gives great results quickly and is a great value. I highly recommend!

Alex was a panic hire for us when the photographer that we had booked to cover our son's first birthday fell sick a day before the event. Thankfully Alex was available, and the results were so good that I am actually happy that our original choice bailed out. (Though not happy for her falling sick :-) ). Alex covered captured both posed photographs and candid shots amazingly well. Bonus points for patiently working with our one year old, who was stressed with so many people around. I highly recommend Alex, and would definitely hire him next time we need a professional photographer!

She knew exactly what to do while taking the pictures and easily integrated herself with the guests at the party. Do you need a photographer? Then hire Katrina...She is the BEST!!!

They were AWESOME! They brought on a third photographer to help when they realized the size of the wedding events. They made suggestions where they knew better with their expertise and it worked out better than perfect - I.e. when the best time to take family photos. They were on time and ready to go with very creative pictures. I haven’t received my photos or video yet (it’s onky been 1 month today) but I have no doubt they will blow me away. THANK YOU!!!

John is by far one of the best photographers we've worked with—we hire photographers in 12 cities for corporate events we produce. He arrived early, took all the shots on our shot list, and is just a friendly guy. His work is just as great—the composition, color, and style. It's not easy to find a corporate photographer whose work and professionalism are of high-quality. Duffernutter Photography is our top pick for Seattle photography—and it should be yours too!

Andrew Achong is AMAZING! He delivers high level professionalism with a unique creativity I have yet to see others exude. In fact, when we were taking bridal portraits at the White House hotel in Biloxi, several staff members commented on the uniqueness of the shoot. They said that they see photographers in there constantly but all of them take the same shots. Not Andrew. He was laying on the ground, climbing on furniture and ledges, making you laugh (or in my case, helping me not be awkward) all to get the PERFECT shot. He definitely knows how to capture the moment. He loves black and white photos but, of course, is amazing with color as well. He shares a passion for photography that so many photographers have lost. You can tell he has fun doing it and that shows in his work. He is super flexible, efficient and accommodating. So much so that he was able to get my bridal portraits shot, edited, printed and displayed in less than a week before the wedding. Delivering the impossible! He is an exceptional guy and an even more remarkable photographer. He is incredible to work with and you will not be disappointed in his shots. He excels in capturing action shots with impeccable timing. He is super responsive and we always received our pictures from him so quickly! I used him for family portraits (including one baby and a toddler {takes skill}), bridal portraits, rehearsal dinner, and our wedding. I can’t say enough positive things about Andrew. I absolutely, without a doubt, recommend his services to EVERYONE. You will love reliving the moment with his photos.

We enlisted Ben's help for a pregnancy announcement a few months back. He agreed to help us on short notice and was extremely professional throughout the entire process. He offered creative guidance and helped bring our ideas to life. After the shoot, Ben worked quickly to get us the pictures--they turned out great! During the process he was cognizant of our proposed use of the photos--for social media and for printed announcements--and was sure to adjust his approach accordingly. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a photographer to cover any event--big or small!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
