I have been looking for someone to repair my roof for months. All of the large roofing companies refused the work if it didn't involve a full roof repair. Within an hour of connecting on Thumbtack, I was contacted by Brian at B&M construction via email. I called him that same day and had a conversation with him right away. He sent me a quote within a few hours. Twenty four hours later my roof was repaired. I was so excited to wake up after a major downpour and not find water all over my kitchen counters and floor. I will definitely be reaching out to Brian again when I have more repairs to be done.

The entire experience with Regal was impressive and exemplary. I live on Capitol Hill in a large, 1903 three story building with a lot only slightly larger than the structure. The building had not had a complete tear-off and re-roof for the life of the building, with the southern portion of the roof having FOUR layers, with the bottom being the original cedar shake, which is three layers of wood all by itself. The roof is also quite steeply pitched @ 8/12. For these reasons most of the bids I received were quite high and one company I contacted refused the work. It's true, it was a very tough job. Access was not good for ladders, the dumpster had to be placed inch by inch as the first driver refused to place it, electrical and phone lines to neighbors, etc. are all close, the shingles had to be hand carried to the rooftop because the delivery truck couldn't access the roof. Besides this the top unit of the building has a cathedral ceiling and so special venting procedures were required to deal with the insulation packed into what would otherwise be the vented area. Through all of this the bidder, Keith, was straight-forward and personable, and had good recommendations for material that was not confined to one manufacturer, as well as presenting excellent "standard" materials and workmanship. The owner, Tony, appeared at the start of the job to see that the crew was all set up and everything had been attended to, and the crew of three worked very very hard to get the job done right. I got up on the roof numerous times myself to check everything out and it always looked good. The lead man was well-spoken and always calm and reasonable and friendly in the midst of an enormous amount of material coming off a very steep slope. The job I saw them do was about as tough as residential roofing gets and the entire crew were friendly and easy to deal with throughout. Cleanup was done very well -- even in the gutters -- and the grounds were well protected in the course of the job. Dealing with the money and the office and the actual contract was seamless and everyone was responsive and on-the-ball. I would highly recommend Regal Roofing to anyone. I got eight bids before choosing Regal and now that the job is done I'm very happy with the choice. There's a lot that can go very wrong in a roofing job especially one this complex and tough and they didn't miss a beat. I am a very satisfied customer and I feel the money was very well spent. I am looking forward to another 30 years + under cover.

The experience I am writing about is how "excellent" your software is in repeatedly contacting me because I happened to surf the web looking for roofing work. When your second email arrived, there was no option to check for anything other than the 5 companies you listed. I did not use D&C service or any other company. I randomly chose them hoping that would be the end of you communication. I certainly did not expect to get follow-up emails trailing my "choice". I respectfully suggest that for the second automated email, you offer the option "cancelled the project" or "please unsubscribe me" which is what I'm asking you to do for me now. Please read this and comply with my request, Thank you. Dr. M O'Connor

After selling our home we needed items repaired on our roof. We had a very short window to get the items repaired due to a short close. Justin from Depenable Roofing was easy to reach by telephone, prompt to get out to look at our needs and fit us in to his very busy schedule and actually got the job done two days ahead of schedule. I would highly recommend this company. Many other companies we contacted either never returned our calls or kept giving us the run around. Save your time and just give Justin a call! It will save time.

Gafco Roofing and Construction started to impress my wife and I from the beginning with a competitive and detailed bid. We decided to hire Gafco to paint our house and renovate our deck because we felt Eric, the owner, understood our needs and could deliver what we wanted at a competitive price. We were not let down. The crew and Eric showed up early, worked hard, listened to our concerns and wishes, and went above and beyond to ensure the work area was clean and safe at the end of the day. With three young children that was really important. The work was completed on time and the product was exactly what we expected.

We spent months attempting to find a company to work on our roof. While other companies delayed, a quote was submitted within days of contacting SoundPacific and the work was done shortly after. It was an easy and painless process that exceeded all expectations. I also can't emphasize enough how much I appreciate SoundPacific's communication and integrity. We requested a quote for another roof but decided to differ the maintenance to a later date. Michael continued to answer key questions with the understanding that we would likely put the project on hold.

Pedro is fair, reliable, honest, clear, prompt and just a very pleasant, polite guy. He and his crew clean up after themselves, take before and after pictures to show what work was done and are very thorough, for example - he caulked the nail holes I hadn't noticed from a previously detached zinc strip. Excellent gutter cleaning and roof repair and inspection with no "hidden costs". I got a few cheaper estimates, but next year I will be calling Pedro again. He also does general contracting - he is someone I will be in touch with since I have gotten to the age where I can't do the jobs I used to be able to do. Thanks Pedro!

We had to repaint our house a year after it had been painted by another company. The paint was bubbling. I did quite a lot of research and interviewed several painters and decided to use Capital Builders. The experience from start to finish was a good one. Our house looks beautiful again. I highly recommend this company.

I had a front door and screen installed and Craftsman Construction did an excellent job. They were so very professional and efficient, in addition to being very nice. I was so impressed that I have two other tasks that I hope to have started in January. And they cleaned up after themselves, wow! Craftsman Construction is definitely who you want to take care of any construction projects.

One of the best contractors I've had work for me, the quality of work was in my opinion 100% above the normal contractors out there. The fencing job quality was the best workmanship I've seen and beat the estimated time allowance by 25%. If you have the opportunity to hire such skilled craftsmen, I promise you'll be more then satisfied.

What a difference! The first bid I received came from a high pressure sales rep of a roofing company who I would guess has never actually worked on a roof. He tried to pressure me in to signing on the spot(glad I didn't). I met with Hawks Remodeling, and they were more knowledgeable, more affordable, and NOT high pressure! The project was completed on time and they did a great job of communicating with me all the way through the project. I would absolutely recommend working with them.

The installers of our heat pump did an excellent job. The unit was a "package" type heat pump, which is unusual for a residential application. The technicians were thorough and worked through the "hiccups" of dealing with this out-of-the-ordinary equipment. We were pleased with their work.

We needed the gutters cleaned and downspouts unclogged before the weather gets even wetter around here. Mass&Mass responded to the request right away, and Wilson came out and gave me a comprehensive quote after inspecting the roof and gutters. We decided on a price and they arrived 2 days later to complete the job - Ended up having the gutters and downspouts cleaned out, the moss removed from my roof, a moss treatment applied, and had 2 vents fixed. They were very professional, fast, and fair. We will be looking to use them again when we have to get a new roof put on.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
