Sergei and his some did a great job buildings a 2 sided gate to exactly match the rest of our fence. It's a project we've been meaning to complete for years. I was lucky to meet Sergei the exact day I reached out via Thumbtack. He was free to start the very next morning and then had the gate completely finished the following day. I'm very pleased and enjoyed getting to know him as well. Will use in the future. Thx again!

Gary is a great guy and super efficient. His quote was at least $500 less than the other guys. He finished a previous project early and was able to get me taken care of much sooner than expected. I needed 75ft of fence installed and he knocked it out in less than 2 days. I didn't realize Gary was cash/check only, but I definitely recommend his services. Thank you so much!

Nate and crew showed up on-time, and completed the project in 3 days. This included tear down and removal of old fence, installation of 80' chain link, and over 90' of cedar, including 4 gates, horse panels and one really really cool gate! Wish we could upload a pic. Tina :)

I needed the fence installation quite urgently. Noel responded promptly and tried to accommodate my request. He came out to give estimate as promised. His price was fair.. better than competitors. What more impressive was his hard working team. They started early and finished earlier than expected with excellent and professional work. Then I hired him for another fence installation which was more challenging with lots of big trees and roots along the line. They completed their work sooner than expected again with high-quality work. Noel is humble and professional. I'm happy to have hired him and I will keep adding more works for him to do. Thanks!

We just did a complete remodel of our backyard. It was literally torn down to nothing and rebuilt. The job involved removing existing patio, cutting down a tree, clearing all the plants, removing steps, leveling the whole yard, building retaining walls, fence, gates, laying a fairly large patio area with pavers, building a fire pit area with flagstone, drainage, sprinklers and planting. I hired G&E based on the reviews on thumbtack and I couldn't agree more with some of the reviews about their professionalism. They are easily among the best contractors I have worked with. Reliability, Punctuality, Accountability, Flexibility, and Quality are some of the key qualities I was looking for and they fit it perfectly. We are very happy with how our yard turned out and it is better than what we have envisioned. I would definitely hire Polo and team again for any future work. If you are looking to get any landscaping work, don't think twice about G & E.

I needed to remove an old retaining wall that was falling down and rotting. It was made of railway ties and was 70' long and 5-6' high. Julio and his crew did a great job without complaining. The job turned out to be much bigger than anticipated. All the work had to be done by hand including the removal of 80 old HEAVY ties from a steep hill. They also had to carry most of the stone and fill in 5 gallon buckets due to the location of a shed and the collapsing hillside. The wall itself collapsed adding to the difficulty. Add to that the nasty cold and rainy weather and it was not fun. They replaced the wall with new 6x6x8 treated landscape timber and reinforced it with posts in concrete. They also installed a drainage system which the first wall did not have. Throughout it all, they had a tremendous attitude and were promising that the job would get done and that they wanted to do it right. Julio did not ask for more money than his bid(even though the job probably took twice as long as planned). I did voluntarily give him additional funds. It was well worth it and the wall looks great. I now have confidence that my shed and house will not be sliding down the steep hill into the creek.

TJ is very well versed in construction knowledge and building code needed for my task, which was demo of my old fence and construction of its replacement. This made it easy to walk through during the estimation part, and feel confident of what I would be getting, and that I was making the right choices. I feel the price was fair, especially considering the quality. The demo was well done and completely cleaned up. Ditto the construction of the new fence. Quality materials were used and great care. I am very satisfied with the job done, and no issues came up at the walk through.

I couldn’t have been happier with my experience with Donald and his team. I had an urgent need to replace a section of fence, as a portion was falling down. Donald was immediately responsive and able to work around my schedule to get the project done. He was punctual, showing up at the specified times everyday, and completed the project within a week as we discussed. Midway through the project, we encountered a problem with the ground around where the fence was being installed... and Donald offered multiple fixes for the problem and we were able to quickly come up with a solution. Additionally, Donald was able to save one of gates on my project and save me some money!! Donald is competitively priced, punctual, and does an amazing job. I would highly recommend him for your fence project!!

Igor and his team did an excellent job installing a new fence throughout our entire complex. They also built 9 dumpster enclosures and four entry gates. The only thing we are waiting on now is for some dry weather so they can stain. We like their work so much we have several other projects lined up for them in the coming weeks.

Zackary was hired for two separate projects. Our garage was in terrible condition (100 year old property) and he rebuilt/designed the space for use as my husbands office. We also had him custom build a fence on challenging terrain! He showed creativity and attention to detail with both projects. I plan to use him for a future basement remodel.

JW Builders provided a prompt response and was able to come out to give me a quote the same day I posted on Thumbtack. Then when I called to schedule the work, Josh and his crew came out and removed the old fencing and posts, and even finished the new fence installation the same day! The fence looks great, and I have had several compliments from my neighbors and friends. It also contains my dogs, which is what I wanted. I would recommend JW Builders, straightforward, affordable, and quality work. Thanks!!

I hired KD&D to get my overgrown yard back to looking like a normal yard. They exceeded my expectations. They put in a lot of work on my overgrown grass, trees, bushes and flowerbeds which transformed my yard to make it look nicer than when I originally bought my house.

Stacey was great. He was the only one to set up a time to make an estimate on pulling out an old deck and building a new one. His estimate was fair, and he got the job done when he said he was going to. I couldn't ask for anything more and would happily hire 12 Hawk Contracting again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
