Ernesto and his team completed a cedar wood fence for our backyard recently (see pics). He offered a fair price for the project and worked hard with his team of 2 to get everything completed on time. The best part of the service is that he listens to the customer and provides service based on request.. Quality of work and materials provided is top notch. Moreover, his crew did some minor works like cleaning the roof of pine needles at no additional cost. Would highly recommend!

Serghei did an amazing job installing a drop rod on my fence, into my stone pavers. He even went the extra mile to ensure the fence gate was more secure and level. Quick response and very precise work. The fence is so straight and secure now - the last windstorm really beat it up, so I’m very happy it will be able to stand through the next windstorm. :)

Totally happy with Gary's repair/replacement of our damaged cedar fence. Extremely prompt, very reasonable bid, completed the work exactly as described, cleaned up the work space and hauled away the debris from the old fence. The resulting fence was a very good match with existing undamaged fence. Thank you!

I needed the fence installation quite urgently. Noel responded promptly and tried to accommodate my request. He came out to give estimate as promised. His price was fair.. better than competitors. What more impressive was his hard working team. They started early and finished earlier than expected with excellent and professional work. Then I hired him for another fence installation which was more challenging with lots of big trees and roots along the line. They completed their work sooner than expected again with high-quality work. Noel is humble and professional. I'm happy to have hired him and I will keep adding more works for him to do. Thanks!

We just did a complete remodel of our backyard. It was literally torn down to nothing and rebuilt. The job involved removing existing patio, cutting down a tree, clearing all the plants, removing steps, leveling the whole yard, building retaining walls, fence, gates, laying a fairly large patio area with pavers, building a fire pit area with flagstone, drainage, sprinklers and planting. I hired G&E based on the reviews on thumbtack and I couldn't agree more with some of the reviews about their professionalism. They are easily among the best contractors I have worked with. Reliability, Punctuality, Accountability, Flexibility, and Quality are some of the key qualities I was looking for and they fit it perfectly. We are very happy with how our yard turned out and it is better than what we have envisioned. I would definitely hire Polo and team again for any future work. If you are looking to get any landscaping work, don't think twice about G & E.

Enrique is a "Jack of all Trades". He was contracted to paint the exterior of the house. Before all work had been completed he had also re-roofed the flat roof of the house addition, replaced the water tank, repaired loose hanging gutters and did some minor drywall repair. Too, he noticed some incidental items that needed addressing. He corrected these at no additional charge. He was prompt and completed all work in an agreed upon time frame. I highly recommend him.

I have been a contractor for 21 years, and have worked with all kinds of tradesmen over the years. I can honestly say that Yuri of Kamp Construction is a true pro. He was punctual, professional, and expedient in getting my old chaining fence removed, and my new 6' tall cedar fence built…. and to a high standard of quality. Not only will I be using Kamp construction again, I will also be recommending him to my clients as well.

We were looking for a carpenter do do a fix up for our 2 bathrooms thinking we just needed a little wall job. When he looked behind walls he had to remove 3 tile walls they were full of rotted wood full of ants. In back bathroom he took the floor up and installed wood tile flooring and replaced wall. In big bathroom he re hung new tile complete with shampoo holder with special waterproofing the boards beneath. He did an excellent job and very quickly. I would recommend him to all my family and friends. He is Cuban so he has a cute accent and great personality he will be welcome in our home forever.

First off, Joshua, the owner of JW Builders, is one of the most professional contractors I have worked with to date. His crew rebuilt my deck and did a repair/rebuild of part of my fence. His crews attention to detail and communication are what stood out the most. I would highly recommend these guys to anyone looking for excellent quality work and on their ability to work on a tight deadline. Thank you so much for my amazing new deck. One happy customer here.

Scott and his team of professionals at Hardwood Warriors is that needle in the haystack of Construction contractors I was looking for. They did one helluva job with my flooring project. Firstly Scott is very responsive via phone and texts even after I hired him and paid deposit. That’s rare in this industry. Secondly these guys are very professional, and left my house cleaned up, vacuumed every night when they left and even parked the dump truck responsibly. Thirdly they did a bang on job and on schedule. Lastly and most importantly Scott worked with me to give me a great price. He was upfront about all the costs involved and did not nickel and dime me on the materials. I wish they did more than hardwood flooring!

I hired KD&D to get my overgrown yard back to looking like a normal yard. They exceeded my expectations. They put in a lot of work on my overgrown grass, trees, bushes and flowerbeds which transformed my yard to make it look nicer than when I originally bought my house.

They did a great job fixing broken wood fence! They came when they said they would, and did the job at a reasonable price. Even fixed a bit of broken concrete on one walkway without charging us for it. Will definitely hire again.

G&I did an outstanding job building a high quality custom cedar fence over 500 lineal feet, multiple gates. They started on time and worked log hours to get it completed as quickly as possible. I found that changes that we needed to made on the fly were easy working closely with Igor and his workers, all who were very nice and respectful. One of the best contractors I have ever worked with. They come with the highest recommendation.

They tore down 12 panels of wood fence and replaced it with vinyl in just 2 days. During the initial consultation they even described in detail what extra steps they planned to take in the installation of the new posts to prevent the weakening rot from reoccurring. The new fence is beautiful, we are very pleased with their work. We especially appreciate the 6 year warranty on their construction. Considering the extra steps they took to make this fence so much more permanent than the last one, we don't anticipate needing to call in the warranty.

After rescheduling our appointment when one of his job ran longer than expected, Raymond (the contractor) never showed to our second, rescheduled appointment nor did he bother to let us know or respond to our text, half an hour after our appointment time, asking him if he was still coming. Very disappointing.

We shopped around for Contractors to build a fence on our huge corner lot, to include an electric gate for our driveway. The reason we went with Budget Remodel and Restoration is because they are a small family owned business and we felt this team would be dedicated to our job in particular. They are competitive on pricing, professional and did a great job. (The job was done on time and even completed under budget) The General Contractor took the time with us to explain things in way that we would understand the logistics of the job. Would recommend again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
