Stephen's work of installing a heavy wood door with custom trim and ironwork into a old home was fantastic. He was friendly, asked for my preferences as he worked, and did a great job.

I hired Andrey for both tile installation as well as installing hardwood floors. He did a great job on both. He was flexible and didn't panic when something wasn't ready. He just re-scheduled. We remodel many apartment units and I plan on using Andrey for all my tile and wood floor installations.

Project is complete. My project consisted of 4 double wood French style door jams, and 1 single wood French style door jam going into my courtyard that was rotting due to weather elements and rain over 13 years. I also had an additional garage entry door jam to be fixed as well. The jams needed to be sanded and repaired, even replaced in some areas with new wood. The thresholds were all replaced as well. Then sanded to match, caulked and painted. It was a delicate process to match the existing door and look of the custom home, as well as the surrounding stucco. The project took a total of 8 working days, 6 of which Bob had the help of his buddy Rick. I will upload before and after photos. I am more than happy with the outcome. The materials did not cost much, it is Bob's time and skill that was the main costs involved in the project. Well worth the outcome and quality. Thank you Bob & Rick!

Steve is an excellent carpenter and has many other skills as well. He recently put in a small, cast iron wood stove in my kitchen. He made what I thought was going to be a long and painful project go efficiently and smoothly. Included an exterior chimney that meant cutting a hole through the wall. Steve did a beautiful job, and I am so pleased.

Wes came by our house and looked at refinishing a lamp and a large wood carving. He gave us a quote and a delivery time. He delivered on time And we were so happy with his work that we gave him a ceder hope chest to take back with him to work his magic on. He just delivered it the other day, and it turned out beautiful. We will use him again when we have other projects.

Noel responded promptly to my request and provided same day services. Although the load had to be split into two loads, Noel did not hesitate. He was also very accommodating given the fact that I had a previously scheduled appointment that conflicted with the work that needed to get done. I definitely recommend his services and would hire him again if needed. Thank you so much Noel!

I haven't used Heyzen's services yet, but he was able to come view my home and get me an estimate on incredibly short notice. On top of that, he provided me multiple written quotes for different levels of repair so that I can figure out what solution is best for me at this time. He has been incredibly responsive and promptly answered any questions that I have had. Thank you!

Robert mounted my very large and heavy headboard to the wall. It involved trimming some wood off the headboard then affixing a bracket to the wall then attaching the headboard to the bracket. Getting the measurements correct and having the bracket level were critical with very little room for error. Everything went perfectly. I'm very happy with the work and will definitely use Robert again.

Two Brothers went above and beyond what they had to do to make my floor refinishing project a success, including installing a patch of new wood were the old wood was previously sanded down to low. I couldn't even tell where they patched it but it looked a whole lot better. They guys were neat, punctual, and fast. I would hire them again.

I hired this family business to first paint one bedroom. They did such a good job, I continued with the hall, living room and the trim. It was a very high room, so they needed scaffolding. They cleaned up after the jobs, and were always on time and on budget. When small adjustments needed to be made, they made them happily at my request --the quality of the word is very good. They are trustworthy. I hired them to do additional work re-furbishing ceilings and removing stain from a wood ceiling. I would recommend them and hire them again.

Eric did a really good job. Our wood siding was very old and could not be matched perfectly with store bought. Eric was able to build the replacement piece with modifications to have it match the rest.

Jared from Precision remodel installed a retaining wall, patio and walkway in my backyard. He also installed hardwood flooring and new finish trim in my kitchen and living room. He was very curtious, finished on time and always cleaned up after himself. I am very pleased and have recommended him to other friends.

Chris was great from start to finish! We started having him paint our kitchen and dining room which turned out great. We found out he provided other services and hired him to install backsplash in our kitchen, as well as wood floors in our dining room. Everything looks great! He always kept us informed of progress, showed up when he said he would, and even gave suggestions on how we could save money in the process...who does that?! We are very greatful to have found him, and will definitely be hiring him again in the future!

A+++ Levi (the bearded face of Left Coast), Jason and Bryan are what quality is all about. From install of new 14x14 aggregate concrete pad to final assembly of the wood gazebo, wonderful work. I'm going to turn to these guys on future projects, and when they get so busy because their reputation spreads, I'll wait the time necessary for them to return.

They did a great job fixing broken wood fence! They came when they said they would, and did the job at a reasonable price. Even fixed a bit of broken concrete on one walkway without charging us for it. Will definitely hire again.

We bought a house with badly stained carpet in the living room and stairs. As both my husband and I have allergies, removing this ourselves was not ideal. Tugsuu was very responsive from the very first message with his quote. He was very flexible and willing to come out on a Saturday to do the job. They left the job site cleaned and now we're ready for our next step - new wood floors! Thanks, Tugsuu. Happy 4th of July weekend!

Chris was hired to fix my deck and rotted wood sections. He problem solved as he found carpenter ants, previously done poor craftsmanship he had to fix, and come up with creative solutions to address what I wanted from my second story deck. I’d hire him again for any carpentry needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.
