Zoe is terrific. We hired her due to other's recommendations and because her photos have an intimate quality that leaps off the page. We were not disappointed. She is creative, thoughful, easy to work with and seemed to be both invisible and everywhere at once. She took all of the anxiety out of our wedding photography--at a very reasonable price. I'd hire her again in a flash!

Paul and Stephanie were amazing from beginning to end. From our first tasting, where we were able to try a wide variety of foods, we were so excited to work with them. The day of our wedding, they were on time, looked professional, and quickly prepped and set up so that food would be available as quickly as possible for our guests. The food was AMAZING and we received many, many compliments from our friends and family. Thank you SO MUCH! We will be recommending you to everyone we know for catering needs.

Great job Dan. Our wedding blu-ray came out so much better than we expected. We had Dan edit it and it was very much worth it. He caught all the moments that I, as the bride, was not able to see. There were even some small surprises along the way. Thank you Dan.

Brooke is amazing! I feel like I was the most neurotic person in the world over the last two months waiting for my wedding day. I was full of questions, concerns, etc. Brooke answered everything and put my mind at ease. On my wedding day, I had hair and make up scheduled for myself. At the last minute I added my mother and there was NO issue. Brooke made us both absolutely beautiful!

We loved working with Kyle! He is such an awesome individual. I found Kyle through thumbtack months ago. We met up with him and instantly we cliqued! He took the time to get to know us and so the photoshoot just went smoothly and not awkward at all. It helps a lot when you are comfortable around your photographer :) Kyle is full of energy and definitely knows the right shots to take. He will not rush you and will take the time to capture the right moments. It's unfortunate that our wedding will be on a cruise and aren't allowed to bring our own wedding photographer; but I will definitely contact him again for other stuff and let other friends know about him!

We hired Jason to photograph our court wedding. He was very responsive from the beginning and took initiative in planning for the photos, asking about who will attend, what we'll wear, putting together a shot list, etc. He was very thoughtful and detailed, showing up before us to survey the campus and find the best spots for photos. He was very patient with us as we asked for a billion combinations of group photos, and kept us relaxed and laughing. We're very satisfied with his work and we feel so lucky to have found such a great photographer. It really made a difference.

My experience with Divya was beyond expectation!! As a Bride, I had an unexpected last minute hair and makeup need the day of the wedding. She accommodated me without hesitation. I had never even met her but I had seen some if her more detailed work on her site and new she could handle what I was asking for. From the first moment I opened the door, she made me feel comfortable and confident. I sincerely hope I have a future need of her services. She is a true professional and her work shows how much she loves what she does. She is beautiful inside and out. Please trust her and use her. You will NEVER be disappointed! Stephanie

Alchemy events was wonderful to work with. Evan and his team walked us through the process so that even in the middle of stressful wedding planning, we felt comfortable knowing our day was in his hands. Even as small things popped up on the big day, Evan handled them with ease. Don't know what we would have done without him! Thank you for everything!!

Britta was fabulous. I was searching for a vendor late in the game and she was not only helpful but supportive during all the building stress. She took lead right away on rehersal day and really helped to make our special day, magical! We couldnt have asked for a more warm and assertive coordinator :) as a control freak myself, I knew I could count on her to get it done.

Firstly, I want to thank Andrew Achong for his impeccable work!! One thing important when you hire anyone is you want to be sure they know what they’re doing because you want the best. With Andrew you get just that, the best! I am beyond grateful for his tireless attitude and pure passion, when you hire Andrew you benefit from that! From the moment Andrew has his camera out he captures the most beautiful shots seemlessly! He’s professional and takes his job seriously. With his keen vision it’s like living my wedding over again when looking at his photographs. I highly recommend Achong Photography and I will definitely be using Andrew’s services again!

Ben blew our expectations away. He was excellent at capturing candid photos of all of the little moments you never want to forget. He is also great at posing the staged photos in a way where they don't look forced. Before the wedding, he met with us to understand what type of pictures we're looking for. He also sent us a form to list all of the different pictures we wanted with the names of people who would be in each - so he was super organized and prepared day-of. Not only is Ben a great photographer, he's unbelievably nice. We had a bit of a flower snafu the day of the wedding, and Ben stopped by Ballard market on his way to the venue to see if they had the flowers we needed! He is so easy to work with. He puts everyone at ease, which makes for great pictures! Ben is also really helpful post-wedding; he's knowledgable about which companies print the best photos based on format. We are SO happy with our pictures! We highly recommend Ben!

Lenaig did an amazing job with our engagement photos! They came out better than I could have asked for. From first contact on Thumbtack, she was incredibly responsive, professional, and personable. Prior to the shoot, she was flexible and understanding when I needed an adjustment on the contract timeline. At the shoot she demonstrated her passion for her work over and over again. And her turnaround/delivery timelines are unreal! We're very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with her and are looking forward to (hopefully!) getting to work with her again for our wedding in August.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.
