The reason I hired Luis to begin with was his responsiveness. I was ready to hire another contractor but waiting on them to answer one question. While I was waiting on the other contractor's response Luis answered all my questions so I hired him instead. He maintained great communication through the whole process. Work quality is top notch, even above my expectations. If something wasn't quite what I was imagining Luis figured out a way to fix it. All around great guy, I would highly recommend him even to my closest friends and family. Thanks for your work Luis!

I have hired Jamin Moores for numerous remodel jobs at my home for the past ten years. His knowledge and experience is vast and varied. He can do it all. I can trust him to listen and hear what I need and find the most inexpensive way to make it happen. The results are professional and his work is quality. He is a first rate contractor, and I plan to hire him for all my future projects!

Aaron Moores, came quickly, assessed the wind damage. Quoted $500.00 to do the repairs that would hold until spring, then we are going to ask for more quotes for a complete roof replacement. Under the currant weather conditions, we need it done ASAP, he said Sunday or Monday. I said yes, get it done. Roofers are overloaded from wind damage all over town, I am grateful to find somebody.

After the wind storm of winter 2015 we were in some need of roof, porch roof on the back of our garage repaired as well as a few other things the wind had damaged. Kind of new to thumbtack. I ended up being contacted by four or five contractors interested in putting in their bid. James was the first one who contacted me and the first one to come take a look. Others either price gouged or we had to wait on their schedule. I ended up hiring him and not sorry I did. He made sure to let me know that for the "little bit I had to fix" it wouldn't take that long. Hubby works night shift and James and his crew did an excellent job of working around OUR schedule and never expected us to work around theirs. We barely noticed any noise they did a good job getting it done quickly and fairly quietly. And with good quality. I really can't say enough good about them. I am impressed and will not hesitate in the future to give them a call.

Kevin is a surprising and refreshing contractor who is a great pleasure to work with. He is fast, neat, and clean which is of the utmost importance in a commercial restaurant. Kevin's willingness to work during off-hours was a huge plus which meant the restaurant did not have to delay opening times. His remodeling work is so impressive, customers asked for his contact information. I was so impressed that I had Kevin perform work on my house and he was the same professional speedy and clean contractor. He performs only first rate work and took my ideas and made them low cost and feasible and functional fruitions. WOW! This guy is great!

Very nice man to work with. He did a great job with the tile work and even though we ran into problems with the plumbing for the new sink he stayed until the job was done. I am very pleased with his work and will certainly use this contractor again and will recommend him to my friends and family!!

My basement floor was not level where I am putting a new bathroom. Ernie arrived when he said he would for his bid; got the bid to me in writing the next day; did the work the very next day. Grinding concrete can be very dusty, Ernie and his helper kept the dust to a minimum by using a vacuum system. He was on time with everything, did everything he said and more, and the quality of work was excellent. Could not have asked for a better contractor. Will absolutely use EWC again if I have any need for concrete work. Very satisified!!

These guys were very patient with me, explaining in great detail every step they would take to mitigate the mold an inspector found in our house currently for sale and under contract (mold was stalling the sale). I called them looking for a 2nd opinion when the first quote I received was over $12k... not only was their approach MUCH more thorough in the overall accomplishment of destroying ALL of the mold, but their price was a FRACTION of the original estimate by another company. They also listened to my specific wants and needs and accommodated their skills to my requirements. They were on time, professional, kind and skilled, all you can ask for in a contractor... thank you for getting my house back on track to close!! I always look to support a small business and these guys did not disappoint! Highly recommend.

So far, they are the only ones that truly called me back. Just waiting to see if they show up. if they do, and get the work done by my deadline then they definitely earn all 5 stars. That is meant to be seen at this point. Have not had any luck with contractor's getting back to me due to their heavy workload. Mark will have earned all 5 stars and gotten me out of a bind that I had gotten myself into.

Our project is due to storm damage, we are still in the first phase of the project, Josh was the 5th or 6th contractor we contacted to come give a bid, he was very professional, confident and personable. Out of all the contractors, he was the only one to make a bid on our project! This week phase 2 will be starting, I will update this review as the project comes along! I'm excited to see the work Josh and his crew are going to do!

I hired Apex painting to re paint my home this year and i could not be more pleased. Travis came to our house to look at the project, he was very thorough and asked us exactly what we wanted. he walked us thru his entire process and made sure we knew all of our different options and prices. he then gave us a very detailed estimate that was a fair bit lower than the other contractors we called. They arrived on time the first day well groomed and professional,( im old fashioned i guess but that meant alot to me.) the job was completed on time and far exceeded our expectations. i have recommended travis to members of my family and they are just as happy with his work. i will definitely hire Travis for any future projects

      About

I think, at the end of a project, my work stands out from many other contractors. I talk to my customers, explain what their project will entail, and provide the service. Every project I take on, I do as if I'm doing it for myself. I don't "cut corners" on projects. If I run up against an unexpected issue, I talk to my customers and make recommendations. Ultimately it's up to the customers what they'd like to do. Many of my customers have become personal friends.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

        What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

        • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
        • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
        • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
        • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
