Justin from Count on it Construction had his hands full with my repair job. My upstairs bathroom was flooded and the house was built in 1920. Justin and his team worked hard to put it back together. During the renovations with a day or two left the upstairs bathroom flooded again, due to a faulty fitting on the toilet. Justin came to the house within 10 minutes of my panicked phone call and had his team on sight within 30. He and his team worked tirelessly to make it write and get the house repaired for the second time. For a terrible situation I couldn't have asked for a better contractor to work with. Justin worked miracles and got the house up and ready to go back on the market within 2 weeks. Thank you to you and your team for working so diligently to get us back up and running. Great, honest, responsive, and genuine contractor to work with.

I’m one who tends to always keep his guard up when dealing with contractors because a good honest contractor always seems hard to find. I have an older home in Spokane and had Parley replace the circuit panel in the basement, replace the wire from the panel to the meter, rewire the washer and dryer and also had him dig a trench and run power out to my garage, which included a sub-panel out there. He also ran a 1” PVC pipe from my house to my garage with a draw string in case I want to run security cameras out to the garage. He doesn’t charge per the hour, he charges per project, which is not necessarily a bad thing. My project was just over $4,200. Although I don’t know how well that would work out if someone needed just a minor house call. There were a few minor communication issue with emailing estimates and receipts but we worked through it. All in all I was very satisfied with Parleys work and I would hire him again. I’ve attached some pictures of the old panel and work he did. Thank you Parley!

Damoine was great all the way through the project. Very patient with me as I changed up the project a couple times. I originally wanted a vinyl fence but in my neighbor hood the typical white vinyl would have looked out of place with all cedar fences around it. Damione showed be a brown walnut colored fence and I loved it. Installation was tough because of our sloped yard but he did a great job of leveling it down hill. Great personality, very professional! Neighbors are thinking vinyl now and I have recommended Damoine to them. I will also call him for my window installation next year. Thanks Damione!

Great and easy to work with. As a new homeowner who doesn't "speak" home improvement, he was very helpful in making sure I understood the process! Thanks so much! The house/window trim and deck look great! Look forward to working together again.

Gerald replaced a window after a fire in our house. He was prompt, responsible, and reliable. As a bonus he installed two sets of door locks and "threw that in" for the fee quoted on the window. I would definitely recommend him for a remodel/repair.

I have had Mr. Kueffler work on several projects, both on my home and rental properties. He has remolded bathrooms, painted the interior of my home, replaced appliances and lighting. He has always completed the jobs when he said they would be done and with the quality I expected. I would recommend him without reservation.

Aaron Moores, came quickly, assessed the wind damage. Quoted $500.00 to do the repairs that would hold until spring, then we are going to ask for more quotes for a complete roof replacement. Under the currant weather conditions, we need it done ASAP, he said Sunday or Monday. I said yes, get it done. Roofers are overloaded from wind damage all over town, I am grateful to find somebody.

I hired Steve to remove our carpet from the upstairs and the hallway and replace it with new flooring. He was quick to the initial response. He came to bid the project in a matter of hours . He had a fair bid, and was able to troubleshoot with me on ways that could potentially save me money. We have a very "lived in" home that includes dogs and children, so Steve had his work cut out for him. I had an aspiration to have our flooring replaced while my husband was out of town with my daughter on Spring break. Much to my amazement, Steve got this job done in less than 3 days! Steve demonstrated a great work ethic, a willingness to be flexible, exhibited attention to detail, showed up on time, and hauled away an hint of debris from the project. I'd definitely refer him to friends and family. He is a hard working, fairly priced contractor who has an above average work ethic with a laser-like focus to details....traits that are not easily found, and that is priceless when letting a "stranger" in my home.

Val is one of a kind. Don’t let his shed building skillset make you think that’s all he can do. My project was very custom. I needed 6x6 support beams for a 15x15 extension of my roof (structural – about 8k pounds) that spanned our back patio replaced because they were install below the grade full of rot AND were twisted/warped from not being correctly anchored at the top. (Beware of Lexington high end custom homes). And it had to be done before the 15k of concrete was poured for the new 850 SF patio slab. What a nightmare. The contractors who did bid it backed out because it was ‘a busy summer.’ Val bid it, sourced custom built top brackets that won’t warp the beams, dug out and poured massive footings and piers, and did heavy duty temp supports the entire time to make sure my roof didn’t rip off my house. In the end things couldn’t have turned out better for a $2,500 job that that big contractors didn’t have time for. If you ever want to watch someone do a 12 hour day of hard physical labor and get stuff done, hire Val. I saw him do two of those on my project plus a lot hours in-between. That’s all I can say and it is still not enough.

Ryan Sauer has done many projects for me over the last 4 years. His handiwork is everywhere inside and outside my home. He has removed layers of wallpaper and skim coated the surface, built a cedar deck cover for the back of my house, replaced doors and windows, painted, re-sided my garage, replaced the fence all around my back yard...and that's certainly not all he's done! Ryan is professional, creative, fairly priced, and committed to quality work. I recommend him very highly.

Josh was very competitive, professional, and prompt with all projects. He delivered on all 3 areas we wanted improved in our home (basement finish, including window installation, living room update, and mud room installation), and did so a week faster than promised, and under budget. The quality of work is phenomenal, ideas were very creative, and coordination of all subcontractors and timing was very impressive.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
