I can't say enough good things about Jarrod! He stayed in excellent contact from start to finish, was professional in every way, and did a beautiful job installing my glass shower door enclosure. He very clearly knows his stuff and takes pride in his work - when he initially came to install my shower door kit, he was concerned about the safety of the suggest install procedure and identified a "random" piece in the boxes that he believed to be a necessary part of the install. After contacting the shower door company the next business day, sure enough, Jarrod was right on the money - the "random" piece was indeed very important and the company failed to send the correct install guide. Jarrod could have easily installed the kit the first visit despite his professional misgivings and I would have been none the wiser, but the fact that he took the extra time and visits to do the right thing speaks volumes to his integrity and the quality of his work. I would hire him again in a heartbeat!

2500 sq.ft., 3 bedrooms, 3 baths with 90% of the house covered in hardwood floors. They did the interior windows, dusted all surfaces, cleaned light fixtures, vents and all interior doors. They even cleaned the baseboards without asking. I like not cleaning, I'll probably have them come back every two weeks.

I appreciated that Justin explained the process of the work we needed done and kept me informed as the project progressed. Excellent communication! His price was reasonable and the work was done exactly as promised. While we were waiting for the patchwork to dry he tried to fix a door that wouldn't close. Although he was unable to fix it because of the manufacture defect, we appreciated the effort. We are hiring him for 3 more projects. Thank you Justin!

All of my car door locks were really temperamental and finally I had to stop locking my car for fear that someday I wouldn't be able to get in. I had George come to check it out. I was prepared to replace all the locks or at least get new keys. But he sprayed some WD-40 in all the locks and, like magic, they all work again! He didn't charge me for it at all! Since he was already here I had him look at all the doors in my house. They all have different keys and we always intended to get them changed to one key. In the end he replaced 4 locks and rekeyed them to one key. And he did it all so fast! I am really pleased. George is a gem.

Marvin was awesome. I hired him to do a variety of jobs for me in my house. From working on my roof to inside the house patching up a closet and replacing a basement window and securing a new lock on my door. He is reliable, focused and his work is good and he is a very nice man. I would recommend Marvin to my friends and family and I will hire him again for some more future projects.

Bob did an outstanding job correcting my beautiful, but badly hung front door! Not only did the door turn out well, but Bob's knowledge, thoughtfulness and thoroughness was evident and very appreciated on this challenging project. He was totally professional from from beginning to end. His good work was even more appreciated as he saved me the cost of a new front door. He's on my go-to list and highly recommended by this very particular customer.

Steve was great. I was looking for a new entry door at the back of my house and he actually recommended some effective weatherproofing instead. They did a great job and were in and out in a hour and a half. And saved me hundreds of dollars in the process. Thanks!

I needed my front door fixed, and not only did he call quickly with an offer, he was quite a bit cheaper than other handymen I had looked into. He even came to fix my door on a Sunday! Very short notice for him, and he still answered my request and had my door fixed less than 24 hours later. He arrived a little later than we had talked about, but I didn't mind. He needed to fix the doorknob, and noticed that my door was leaning/off, so he did extra work than what we originally talked about, and even made a second run to Home Depot, just to make sure my door was fixed completely correctly, not just my one issue. He was professional, cordial, and didn't mind my 3 year old son trying to be up in his business, watching what he was doing. He was very kind all around, and genuinely wanted to help me with my door.

Both door locks on my newly purchased older motorhome failed within several weeks after I bought it. I consulted 3 locksmiths...luckily Pi Security Solutions was one of them. Nim Gil came to my home, gave me a fair estimate and had my locks fixed within an hour. He is ethical, professional and very skilled in lock problems. He charged me 1/4 of what Harris Ford estimated. I am completely satisfied and delighted with his work and price, and recommend him unconditionally. Please consider him and his company for any lock problems you have...you won't be sorry!

My situation was a bit of an oddball request. I didn't need "polished concrete with exposed aggregate" - I was simply patching a foundation for my remodel and needed some extra muscle to move and float about 4 yards. The estimates I rec'd from other companies were flat out ridiculous for what was less than 4 hours of work with me helping. In this day and age it seems everyone works hard to NOT work. Not THESE guys! They mean business and aren't shy about rolling up their sleeves to knock it out. I would recommend them to the homeowner/DIY'er that needs an extra hand or anyone that is tired of playing games with "craigslist" companies. Thanks again, guys! I'm onto the framing train!

I hired Bryan & Hands On Contracting to replace an existing aluminum sliding door after we had been informed by the "professionals" at Lowes that the vinyl replacement sliding door we wanted would not fit in the existing rough opening (our only option was an upsell in both door & labor). Bryan & his crew came by to field verify the opening and were confident they could install the door and if needed, had explained remedies if indeed the rough opening was too small. Long story short, Bryan was right, door fit perfectly. Looks great. Bryan and his crew were on-time, courteous, professional and very informative. I WILL hire AGAIN in the future.

I had a front door and screen installed and Craftsman Construction did an excellent job. They were so very professional and efficient, in addition to being very nice. I was so impressed that I have two other tasks that I hope to have started in January. And they cleaned up after themselves, wow! Craftsman Construction is definitely who you want to take care of any construction projects.

Leo was great to work with. We hired Pop-A-Lock to install a keyless entry lock and deadbolt system. He was diligent to make sure the locks lined up accurately and explained as the weather changes he may have to come back and make adjustments due to hot/cold air causing swelling/shrinking of the door.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.
