"I have been hurt in four different car accidents and have had several different massage therapists over the years. Nicole has been by far the most excellent one! She is outstandingly positive, a great listener if you want to talk, or works quietly if you feel like taking a little nap. She remembers what oils you like or your favorite music, if you like lots of blankets, or prefer it cool. She has an amazing intuition that is truly a gift that you can't learn in a book or at massage school. She just understands what your body needs to feel better and begin healing. I have improved so much over the past few weeks of working with her and she has that perfect balance of strength and gentleness so that even the most guarded injured muscles can't resist her gentle touch and you can literally feel the tension and stress and pain (maybe you've had for years in certain spots) just relax and begin to let go. And you feel like a little child again, with no ache or pain! You truly hate to get off the table as you know the old stuff will come back, but it takes longer and longer to do so, you will find yourself thinking, wow I haven't had that ache or pain today, or wow I sure slept better. And one more thing, I love that Nicole has a vast knowledge of aromatherapy and healthy and natural herbs and foods that she is willing to share if you want her to. She's never preachy or pushy about it, and 100% respects your right to have different tastes or opinions. You can just be yourself, while you learn and grow and heal! Nicole truly brings out the best in nearly everyone she meets. She is generous, empathetic and kind. Truly a rare and beautiful person. I would highly recommend her services to anyone, young or old, no matter what your injury or needs, I'm sure you will benefit greatly from her care. I'm sure that word "care" will take on a whole new meaning as it has for me!! "

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, also called Thai yoga massage, combines acupressure and assisted yoga postures. Thai massage is based on the flow of energy through the body and focuses on energy lines called “sen.” It doesn’t use oils or lotions and, instead of rubbing muscles, the massage therapist compresses, pulls, stretches and rocks the recipient’s body to promote the flow of energy through these sen. In this form of massage therapy, practitioners use their hands, knees, legs and feet to apply deep muscle compression and stretch the body. It’s often performed on a mat on the floor instead of on a massage table. Like most forms of massage, Thai massage is used to relieve stress, improve range of motion and enhance flexibility. Some people also use Thai massage to address a range of health issues, including:

  • Relieving tension headaches
  • Decreasing back pain
  • Reducing joint stiffness and pain
  • Stimulating circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Boosting energy

Because a traditional Thai massage session covers all of the muscles in your body, it typically lasts 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

How much do you tip a massage therapist?

All forms of massage therapy, from Thai massage to Swedish massage to deep tissue massage, are similar to other spa or hospitality services. So it’s appropriate to tip a massage therapist the standard hospitality rate of 15 percent to 20 percent of the cost of the session. For example, the national average cost for a deep tissue massage is $70-$90, so expect to tip $12-$18. Of course, you can always tip more or less depending on your experience, especially if you’ve opted for extra services. For example, expect to tip more for a couple’s hot stone massage session that includes aromatherapy. Also, if you’re paying with a gift certificate or coupon, or purchasing a discounted multi-session package, make sure to calculate your tip based on the full price of the massage.
