Corey came for a kitchen sink replacement. He estimated without having visited the site that it would take two hours. Because we had a tile countertop with restricted access to two sides he had to be careful with the existing caulking so that the tiles didn't break. He ended up needing three hours but did a solid and careful job. I highly recommend him.

We asked Daniel to remove laminate and carpet to install roughly 625 sq ft of LVP. He works hard, is great to be around and his work is professional. We will definitely be using him for more home projects down the road. He is punctual (which is hard with Portland traffic) and covers the details. There is one area inside a closet where we ran out of quarter round, so he is going to pop back in down the road after we purchase the materials. We're happy he is willing to do that to finish it 100%. He was very clean and caused no damage to the home at all. Don't hesitate to hire Daniel. He knows his trade well.

Lucian came over right away when I asked him if he could refinish my brand new red oak floors. The installer was not equipped to do the job correctly and I needed help ASAP. Lucian did a wonderful job. The house stayed pretty dust free and everything was cleaned up nicely. The floors look and feel how I expected them too. Beautiful and smooth. I highly recommend him.

We were nervous about whether our decision to paint old kitchen cabinets would be worth the effort/money but we couldn't afford to get new cabinets. Eric was frank and authentic in giving us his professional feedback while considering our budget. The project turned out better than we could have ever imagined! We ended up having him paint our cabinets inside/out in white, install a quartz counter, sink, faucets, hardware all within our budget. He made a suggestion to raise the backsplash tile to the ceiling and the outcome really raised the "wow!" factor. It has been only 4 days since he finished and I've referred him twice already! Eric was respectful and professional. He is a go-getter and passionate about his work. He can be trusted on when he says he will be there and when a project will begin and end. He always responded to us quickly and tries very hard to please. He knows what he is doing and can give excellent advice on what looks good/not good. I recommend following his advice. We will be hiring him again to do our bathrooms next but I'm a bit worried that this review might make him too busy to be unavailable!

Anatolyi is so meticulous and does perfect work. We had him tile a small shower and the tile we had turned out to be a bit irregular. He cut almost every piece to make sure it would fit perfectly. When the shower door installers cracked a tile he came back and repaired it. The repair looks perfect. His price is very reasonable but the reason we chose him is because he is a pleasant person, a go-getter, and his work speaks for itself. We will definitely hire him back for future projects.

We weren't sure what level of work the hardwood floors in our new house needed, but Viktor gave us a few options, and actually recommended one of the lower-cost options. We were clueless, and would have been willing to pay much more, luckily he was incredibly honest. We're very satisfied with the work that was completed; our floors look great! Also important to note - Viktor was very easy to communicate with via email, which was important to us as we have very busy schedules and can't always take the time to make a call.

We initially called Brad for some basic household repairs and interior paint while getting ready to sell our home. Luckily, we pointed out a small crack in the drywall, and upon closer inspection it was found to be squishy (yikes!) leading us to pull back the baseboard and discover mold running the length of the wall. The roof gutter had been built into the exterior siding and had been leaking into the wall for years. If Brad's team had not discovered this and made it an immediate priority to repair, it could have impacted the sale of the house and possibly led to future lawsuits against us from the eventual buyer. Thanks to A1 acting quickly, our gutter/siding/interior wall problem got all fixed up, the new paint and carpet look great and the house sold within days of the work being completed. What could have delayed the sale for months only took a couple of weeks to remedy. Thank you Brad and team! We recommend A1, and we will be calling them to help us fix up our new house too.

We highly recommend NW Madera flooring! We had a large hardwood floor refinishing project and they completed it on time, well within our budget and used top-of-the-line equipment and products. None of the other flooring company quotes came close to what they quoted for the project and they were able to complete it within a time frame that caused the least amount of inconvenience- even though it meant staying on the job until 9:30 PM! ( One less night in a hotel for us!) We will definitely use them for future projects and have already recommended this company to our friends.

Surge was quick to respond and quote the tile work we needed done. His price was competitive and the work started right away. The tile worker, Dmitry, was especially detail-oriented installing tile in our shower and on our floor. He even redid some of the framing work another framer did in order to make sure the tile work looked precise. He communicated via text pictures during the project, which helped us make sure we got what we wanted. We are very happy with our new bathroom!

Our experience with Scott couldn't have been better. He responded very quickly to our Thumbtack request, he showed up exactly when he said he would, he went above and beyond to fix an issue with our subfloor, and he installed the flooring almost impossibly fast-and it turned out perfectly! He has earned my future business, without a doubt. Extremely highly recommended.

I needed to have carpet installed in two bedrooms and used Thumbtack to search. Michael was one of the first to respond, within a few minutes; which is a good sign. I was in a hurry to get carpet installed prior to moving my furnishings into a new home. He understood my sense of urgency, and was happy to meet with me on a Saturday afternoon. What made the process of selecting a carpet color and style so easy, was the fact that he had all of the samples with him. I did not have to make repeated trips to a carpeting store, dragging sample boards back and forth to my place. This is a real time saver. I could view all the carpeting choices at once and see how they looked with my wall colors and lighting. Much easier. I took 2 hours to select two different carpet colors. At no time did I feel rushed to make a decision. Michael was very patient and enthusiastic. He educated me on what type of carpet pad to buy, why the thickness of it matters and what type of carpet would be best for me , since I have two dogs. Michael ordered the carpeting, and got it to Portland in less than a week. I originally had someone else lined up to install the carpeting , but, when that fell through on the day it was supposed to be installed; I was in a panic and left a message with Michael, who was out of town at the time. Michael stepped up to the plate, calling me back within 20 minutes, and assured me that he would find someone on his team that could meet my carpet install deadline. He found two of his guys that squeezed me in between two of their installs. His installers arrived right on time, and immediately got busy laying down the carpet. Michael arrived on site to supervise. These guys got the carpeting installed within an hour and half. I also appreciated the fact that since my doors could not accommodate the thickness of the carpet and pad combined; his guys can trim your doors on site, which they did. Everything done at once. It was a seamless , smooth experience. From selecting the carpeting , to ordering , to its arrival, to coordinating installers; Micheal coordinated everything for me and stayed in constant communication with me. This is extremely important to me. All was done at a extremely competitive price. If you place a high value on communication and expect flawless customer service, this should be the only company you consider for your flooring needs.

I decided to go with Stan to do my floors because of the knowledge he showed when he came to give me an estimate. He explained excatly what he was going to do and if something would not work or look good he give me his advice (not charge me for something that’s going to look bad or just to make extra money off me). When it came time to install the floors he was a perfectionist! He made them look absolutely beautiful!! He has high standards and it really shows in his work. He was always on time and ready to work. Also helped us move furniture from room to room. He made me feel like he cared about me and that I’m not just a regular customer, I appreciate that. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a floor installer, no doubt!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
