Jeff just installed a screen/storm door on our porch today. His professional quality of workmanship and fair price has no comparison. Jeff fit us into his busy schedule on short notice and arrived when he said he would. The door opening was partially blocked by rail posts but Jeff was still able to install the door and maintain his original quote. We are already planning 2 more projects for Jeff, one this summer and a larger project later in the year. His company , Premier Remodeling, will be our go to company for our future projects. I hired A Guy & A Hammer to renovate the kitchen in a house built in 1938. Needless to say, the walls and floors were not necessarily level and straight. Tim did a fantastic job of installing the cabinets and tile backsplash and disguising the room's flaws. He was very willing to incorporate my suggestions into the design. The area next to the refrigerator was unused because of the existence of a heat vent. Tim was able to install an upper and lower cabinet by redirecting the heat underneath the lower cabinet. In addition to the new kitchen cabinets, Tim and his team removed an old chimney from a closet near the kitchen and converted it to a laundry area with a stackable washer and dryer. They also installed a new bathroom floor with radiant heat and ceramic tile. Finally, Tim discovered the floor on the front porch of the house was unsafe. He re-built it and created a screen porch which is the envy of the neighborhood. I have a few more projects for the house, and you can be sure I will be calling "THE Guy with THE Hammer!

We wanted a 10' picnic table for an outside screened porch at the coast. After finding Norm on the internet and seeing other tables that he had built, we decided on a stained gray 10' table with 4 side & 2 end benches that could be pushed underneath when not in use and not take up as much room on the porch. It was a great solution for replacing 3 mismatched white plastic round tables and chairs that were always dirty and mildewy. Now we have a good looking, very functional, sturdy table to accommodate our family and neighborhood cookouts and can seat 14!! Norm was great to work with and very responsive!! He finished the table in record time, delivered it and was quick to respond and resolve a minor adjustment! We would definitely use him again and recommend him to our friends!

Have used him several times in remodeling our 1970's ranch to and open concept and are very pleased with all his work. Consisting of removing walls, installation of hardwood floors in kitchen and entry way. Demo and rebuild of walls including taping and mudding of seams in kitchen and bathroom. Tiling of kitchen backsplash and bathroom shower and floor, and installation of exterior window in shower. Jobs were all done on time and met all expectations of a clean, neat, and through job. Would use him again.

My experience with Rock Solid Exteriors was excellent. We needed a deck built around our pool and needed it done rather quickly. Cody was very professional and took the time to make sure everything was done correctly the first time. Our deck turned out beautiful and we have had a lot of compliments on it. We will definitely have Cody do more work for us in the near future and recommend him to our friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
