Very experienced handyman with plumbing knowledge. He was able to install the vanity and faucet with out taking down the mirror that rested on the vanity top. The finished result is very nice and makes a difference.

David did a remodel of our kitchen including some addition of lighting and backsplash along with some cabinetry work. David was prompt, professional, and extremely polite and did not let time get in the way of Quality work. His expertise in a large swath of various handyman activities was extremely impressive and I would definitely hire David again for any housework that I require

Jeff responded quickly to our request for a contractor. He was able to come the next day. The job was not an easy one. Working in a small attic space, dirty and dusty, he successfully accomplished the job that needed to be done. He was creative, resourceful and experienced. We will use him again!

We hired Claudio for vanity light installation in two bathrooms, change the bedroom ceiling fan and some minor handyman jobs. He is very professional, fun to work with and cleaned up after the work. The price he quoted was fair too. I definitely plan to use him in future.

Dean is a fantastic handyman! He quickly responded to several things I needed fixed. After having some trouble trusting and finding the right expert to help, Dean was able to mount my TV and help with a few other misc. tasks quickly and efficiently. I will need help with furniture assembly and hanging wall decor in the near future so I will definitely be hiring The Resolute Building Group again. I highly recommend Dean's services!

I highly recommend Shelton for any services you may need. He does quality work. Shelton kept me involved with every step of the process and was very patient when we had to come up with a different layout for my deck. He is conscientious and hard working. He put in long hours to complete the job in a timely manner. His son helped and he was awesome as well. Both very knowledgeable. I know I found a great handy guy for any future projects. Shelton is very personable and i trusted him to do the job and he delivered above and beyond my expectations.

We recently had a backsplash installed in our kitchen by Frank Landaverde. I am giving Frank's Construction a 5-star rating because he and his associate showed up when he said he would and completed the job in a timely manner. This was especially important to me because another installer I had arranged did not show up as scheduled without notifying us. We appreciated Frank's suggestions on grout colors to go with the tile we had selected because the backsplash looks great with the cabinets and appliances. It is apparent that Frank takes great pride in his work and I am happy to give him the highest recommendation.

Don did a fantastic job on a minor handyman job (cupboard repair) that we needed taking care of. He was able to schedule us within 2 days of my initial request, and made it to the house on time even though I forgot to send him our address beforehand. In person, he was friendly and professional, and our cupboard looks as good as new!

We hired Brian's Handyman and Lawn Service to replace 5 rotted fence posts after a whole section of fence was leaning after a couple of days of storms and high winds. We found Brian to be a very courteous and hard working individual. He paid attention to detail, used quality materials, and was able to get our fence back together very quickly for a reasonable price. He also cleaned up the worksite when finished and hauled away the broken posts as he agreed to do for the project. I would not hesitate to hire him again for additional projects around our home.

I had Brian work on several projects around my house starting with the basement. The basement remodel turned out amazing. He did the basement floor, trim work and doors. A portion of my basement floor sloped to a drain and other contractors did not know how to make the flooring I wanted Work in that area. Brian was able to complete my flooring project without a problem. From there he installed the wall sconces and track lighting. After the completion of the basement project, I asked him to remodel the bathrooms and paint my kitchen cabinets. Then that led to having him install and paint new doors. What I liked most was his attention to detail. The work area was always left clean and organized. I would definitely recommend him for your next home remodel project or for any repair work needed. He also helped me with unclogging several drains in my home, and changing light fixtures.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
