Steven is extremely efficient. In addition to coming to us for our family portrait he got set up in minutes! We knocked out many different photo locations and poses, if you will, in less than an hour. It probably helped that this group included 4 adults. In addition to a great experience during our shoot, Steven was very quick to edit our photos and send over the photo samples. Love that we get 10 free downloads too!

This review is a long time coming and I feel bad that it took so long but here goes: I cannot even think of enough good words to say about Stories Framed Photography. My daughter was not looking forward to her senior portrait at all. She genuinely does not like her picture taken ever. Abbie assured me that she would listen to Mia and offered to meet us before scheduling the shoot to be sure Mia would be comfortable with her. Needless to say Mia did feel very comfortable with Abbie after just a short conversation at Starbucks. She also was very comfortable during her shoot. And the photos, they were just amazing. I cannot believe how well Abbie captured my daughters personality and how comfortable and happy she looked. The photos were professional quality and I had a hard time not buying more than we needed. Abbie also made a custom piece to match one we had done of my older daughter for her senior portraits and at a very reasonable price. I have no problem telling anyone who needs a portrait of any kind done to call Abbie. Stories Framed is a perfect name for her business. Thanks so much for everything Abbie!!!!

Nico took family photos for a family picture of 10 adults and 3 babies under 2 and they turned out wonderful. Even though it rained so we had to do photos inside, the pictures stil exceeded my expectations. Nico has an artistic edge, is very personable and excels as a photographer! Will be hiring him again in the future for future family or child photos!

Garret did a wonderful job doing photos of our son. It was a surprise for Father’s Day as I had photos taken at our local baseball field. Garret did a fantastic job with my son and was a pleasure to work with. The result was perfect!

We have used Katey for over three years now. She has done a remarkable job capturing moments from days after my daughter was born, to our children interacting with one another, to full family portraits. We have had other photographers attempt to take pictures, and nothing matches up to the style of photography and final product that she is able to create. Our family room hallway and living room are all adorned with the pictures that she has captured for us to document our lives.

It has been nothing short of an absolute pleasure working with David and Sarah (his wife and partner-in-photography) from the first time I spoke with him on the phone. We hired Realife Photography for an engagement photo session in Sept. 2014 and for our wedding on Sept. 5, 2015 at the Audubon Center. David and Sarah have such an amazing vibe- they work so well together, and they are super friendly, funny, creative, and low-key. I don't love having photos taken of myself and was nervous for the engagement photo shoot, but David totally allayed all my nerves by throwing some goofy ideas in with the serious ones, which was perfect for me. It really put me at ease, and the photos turned out beautiful and natural. At the wedding, David and Sarah were an absolute dream to work with. They were accommodating and easy-going, managed to both remember all the important shots I wanted while also being totally invisible during the ceremony and reception. Everyone in the wedding party loved working with them. And the photos are AMAZING! Of the 1300+ photos David sent us, there literally is not a single one that I'm unhappy with. My biggest challenge now is figuring out which ones I want to frame because I want to frame all of them, and all of them reflect who we are. So often when looking through wedding photography, it seems that the photographers are more interested in showing off their own artistic skill and so the photos end up being more about them than about the people or the feeling of the day. David takes the exact opposite approach. He really focuses on us, and uses his skill to elevate the specialness of the day rather than making it the focal point. My favorite thing about David and his company is that they captured the spirit of the day in the most magical and natural way possible. While he did capture some of the important and beautiful details of the places and things, the focus of the photos were 100% on me and my husband, our families, and our friends. You can really feel the joyous energy through the photos, and even when you're looking at a photo and thinking, "woah what a cool angle!" or "dang that's such a unique way to have used the landscape" or "woah look that lighting!", the very first thing you see and the feeling that stays with you is that the photo says something about *us,* and that is so invaluable and, I think, rare in wedding photography. I couldn't recommend Realife highly enough. They were such a joy to have with us on our wedding day, David has been and continues to be so responsive and accommodating, and the photos are such a treasure. I promise you will not go wrong with Realife Photography!!

I took my daughter to Bark River Photography for her senior portraits and we had an excellent experience. John and his staff were professional, fun, flexible, affordable, and I cannot say enough nice things about them. We had many different scenic areas to choose from as well as the studio and John made my daughter feel so comfortable that we had a hard time choosing between all the wonderful, high quality poses. I highly recommend Bark River Photography for any photography need.

I recently brought Larry a 70 year old black and white portrait of my family. It is the only portrait I have of my grandparents and their 5 children, including my Dad. I asked Larry to colorize the portrait. When he sent it to me, I was amazed. The colors seemed perfect and the portrait looked as if it had just been taken. I shared it with my extended family and they all were impressed. I can give a firm recommendation for anyone considering using Zamba services.

Bonnie is a talented photographer and a wonderful person! We have had the privilege of having Bonnie capture some very important moments for us- from our wedding to maternity pictures to family portraits- and we can't say enough about how much we love the images Bonnie has created with us! Bonnie is very flexible and versatile; we have done studio sessions, a shoot in a park, wedding photos (ceremony, portraits, and reception), and even family photos at our home. Bonnie is great with our daughter, too! She has great vision, a wonderful personality, and her pricing is competitive and affordable. I can't say enough about how much we LOVE working with Bonnie!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
