I hired Ben to remove a pedestal sink I had in my bathroom and install the vanity and sink I had already purchased. He was fast to respond and even asked if he could come early. Clearly explained what was going on and when he ran into some problems, like needing to cut away some tile baseboard to have the vanity flush to the wall and how my wall was a little warped, he explained what he could do to fix it. I am very please with the final product and wish I would have done this way earlier.

Eddie showed up on time and we ran into a little problem with the type of wall mount that I had bought. He still managed to mount my Tv with no issue. He was very nice despite all the commotion in my household. Would recommend anyone to him. Quality work at a great price.

Terry did a great job on our house. We changed the color on almost every wall in our home and put a fresh coat of white on the ceiling. He also fixed a number of cracks and imperfections in the drywall. We'll definitely work with him again.

Finish Specialist (Jamie and his team), did an outstanding job. I originally hired them for two stairwells - ceiling and walls. The bid he provided was very fair. But he went above and beyond that. For no extra charge he also painted the entire upstairs hallway, a large basement wall and our huge basement ceiling. They were both thorough and did very good work. They cleaned up everything and even helped fix a broken screen door just because they saw it needed to be fixed. They were a pleasure to have in our home and I'll definitely hire them again should I need any other interior or exterior painting work done. Thanks guys!

DEMO AND REMODEL Had a water damage issue in the basement that needed to be addressed from water leaking from a basement window. We had to re-grade the adjacent outside soil to pitch water flow away from the house and tuck point the blocks affected by the leakage. We contacted Steamatic by referral at work who used them to do a similar water damage fix. The wet wall had drywall since it is a finished basement. We decided to demo the drywall and re-configure the room with an office addition. Steamatic gave me the best price for the demo and installation of green board on all the outer walls as well as painting, electrical/ lighting, doors(2) and shelving (we bought a pre-fab but installed it as a built-in. Within a month all the work was done and I now have my private office with adjacent storage room. Don't hesitate to do your remodeling home project like I did and waste precious time finding a remodeling company you can trust. Call Steamatic and get it done and enjoy!

I hired Weston for help with pool remodel and adding some accessories to my linai. I have a concrete linai which I really like (a lot of professionals were telling me to get pavers). Weston helped me pic out pebble tec colors and tile for the pool and also helped add a lot of color to the linai. We live in a gated community with a very strict board who does not allow a lot of change to the outside of the house. He has a lot of great ideas but also worked within the boards limits. He is very talented, and detailed oriented. He spends a lot of time with art design. Priced well for this area. See pics below (be sure to notice the cypress/teak wood ceiling) as well as wall art work.

My home was built in 1938. I tore off 46 year old paneling in my bedroom that left an awful mess on the walls with the old glue. Bob knew just what to do! Skin coating that made the walls like new and ready to paint. Bob works hard and is dependable. Easy to work with and came through with flying colors.

Andy and Jeremy were great. My project turned out to be much bigger than we expected. They made time to fit me into an already busy schedule and communicated very well about when they would be able to arrive. The fixed cracks in my plaster wall and fixed the water damage to my bathroom ceiling. New drywall and plumbing piping included! I'm very happy with their work!

We are very pleased with the painting projects Kyle has completed. Several walls were only in fair condition and Kyke knew the right products to fill areas, prime and paint the wall surfaces. Kyle is dependable, arrives punctually and finished the projects, neatly, in a reasonable time and is trustworthy. Our building is a 100 year old building used as a museum and it was critical to have trust with the painter since there were times he was alone in the building. He is polite, a pleasure to work with and will accommodate your terms for a very reasonable price. Definitely give him a try!

Kyle was just awesome. Got here on time, diagnosed the work to be done and got right to it. In my basement, I had a couple of old wood panels that were warped. I thought I would need to replace these panels and that's why I put out the Bat signal on Thumbtack. Kyle arrived, took these panels apart and discovered that the boards behind this wall were different from one section to the next. The warping occurred because the thin backing behind these panels had also warped. By putting in the proper backboard, he was able to salvage my old panels and saved me about $60 in new (and non-matching) panels. Overall, his 4.5 hours was well worth it. My basement wall looks so much better after he repaired it. After paint, I'm sure it's going to be close to perfect. Hire this guy. He's young but knows what he's doing. Communication is top notch and he asks all the right questions in order to get your projects done on time and correctly. Thank you Kyle.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

        • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
        • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

        • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
        • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
        • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
