Introduction: I am a professional writer. For more than ten years I worked as a medical writer, writing highly technical texts for use by medical professionals and medical school professors. Books I have written include instructions for use of medical devices, pharmaceutical products and usage, and surgical procedures. As a tutor, my ability to assimilate complex and new information quickly, and transfer that information to others in a concise, accurate, and easy to understand way has proven to be extremely beneficial to my students. My favorite thing about my job is taking a student who may be fearful of the test for which they are preparing and giving them the skills and confidence to not only lose their fear, but even welcome the intellectual challenge that the test presents. And, being an academic nerd and information sponge, I love the learning that I myself experience in working with the different students.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I am a professional writer, and wrote very technical medical books for more than ten years. When my wife became ill with a chronic disease and was bedridden for several years, I quit my job to care for her, and to give the proper amount of attention required by our three daughters! To make ends meet, I started a professional photography business. I also began substitute teaching at the local high schools and universities. Eventually I discovered that, although I was a good teacher to a whole class, I was remarkably successful teaching to individual kids, especially the "hard cases" such as kids with emotional and behavioral issues that were hurting their ability to learn. I found I could help these kids a great deal, even help them to build their self esteem and feeling of self worth, something they are usually lacking in their home lives. Seeing kids that I had worked with that were once labeled "bad kids" turn out to be such things as president of the chess club, to go to college, to become excited about learning, convinced me to switch entirely to private tutoring. The key to my great success: I never met a kid I didn't like.
