Guys from Argo just left my house. It was such a great experience working with them. They fixed my basement window which was totally rotted. Other window companies quoted me more then a thousand to replace it , but the guys from Argo fix it twice cheaper. They did incredible job and my window become look like new. Martin replaced my roof. He was competitive on his price. Project was completed in the time allotted, with a slight delay for weather. He was sure to make sure that the areas were covered with the pop up rain showers we had, so if we did get rain, no issues would occur during installation. I just mowed my lawn, a day after they finished. I did not find any old shingle pieces or nails. They even went over the yard with a magnet to pick up stray nails that may have missed the tarps. While he was doing the roof he also provided a quick quote to fix some aluminum trim issues I had, the price was fair so I had that work done as well. I plan on having him do more work for me in the future.

After 8 quotes for a fence from local fence companies and contractors, I came across thumbtack and figured I would give it a try. Almost immediately entering my info Joe reached out. I was immediately impressed with his professionalism and timely quote. He actually included the exact material quote showing exactly what materials along with how much everything cost. He was the clear winner. I was pretty specific with the timeframe, and he got it done. He stayed on budget as promised, and was great with communication throughout the project. Joe completed a 90+ foot privacy fence with a beautiful gate that crosses my driveway. I recommend Joe Mahas and Native Remodels without hesitation.

Som came out on the 4th of July to give us an estimate on windows. He was extremely professional and very personable. He provided us with a fair price, and even threw in a window for free. Overall, it was a great experience so far. We'll see how it turns out once the windows are in.

Steve Clausing construction provided us our 2nd quote on window installation. I won't name the 1st quote but Steve installed 9 windows a little less than the 1st quoter would do FIVE windows for. Overall, he did a fantastic job replacing our 65 year old windows with new double-pane windows. (5 in the kitchen, 3 in master br and 1 in guest br) Can already feel it's warmer in house.Thank you Steve and Paul for a great job well-done!

Working with Steve was an amazing, POSITIVE contrast to previous contractors we've had in the house. We gave him a "test drive," by asking him to install a couple of windows. When we experienced his workmanship and dependability, we then contracted him to patch up the drywall and install the kitchen cabinets we had already ordered from another company. Dependable: Steve came when he said he would---or called when he was running late. He also went above and beyond what was "required" of him to do his job. We didn't have a car big enough to bring one of our windows home, so Steve picked it up for us, and brought it home! Quality of workmanship: His work was outstanding. Steve paid attention to big AND small details (leveling each of the cabinet doors!); carefully followed--or improved upon--the cabinet plans; touched up the paint that was scuffed when cabinets were installed; and cleaned up after himself every day. With the drywall, he took the time to go over it two or three times, until the new part was seamless with the old. With the window trim, he made a custom stain that beautifully coordinates the window trim to the cabinets, and gave me extra for our future use. Knowledgeable: He knows the code, and chooses to go beyond the minimum. He moved one of our windows, and told us the minimum header was eight inches. He chose to put in an ten inch header. When the rough work was done by the other contractors (plumber and electrician), he pointed out a couple of things that weren't up to code, and said we should be sure these details were done before the rough inspection. He helped me save thousands of dollars by walking me through how to be my own general contractor---at no cost to us. From time to time, Steve would even call me to see how things were progressing, and let me know the "next step," to keep things moving. He pointed out ways he could have saved me money on the cabinets, if I had ordered through him. We're hoping to do an addition on the house in a couple of years. When we do, we'll be calling this guy again. Thanks, Steve, for your outstanding workmanship! I LOVE our kitchen! :)

We called Ultimate Home Concepts in the fall to see about having two very old kitchen windows and both entry doors replaced in our home. We expected to have to wait until spring but Joe made sure the work was finished before the snow hit. Joe came to see us and gave us info about options, pricing, and list of very satisfied references. Pricing was affordable compared with other quotes we had received for similar products but the service was stellar. He answered all our questions, answered and returned our calls. Joe checked in a number of times during and after installation to be sure all was going well and even stained the window trim we wanted himself, with our choice of stain. The installer was wonderful. Polite, hard working and fun to talk to. Installation took two days. One for the windows, which were large, broken and ancient. One day for replacing doors. All were plumbed and trimmed perfectly with two locks each, making our home more secure. They look beautiful and operate wonderfully! Our installer was very skilled, punctual and never left a mess. The quality of work was fantastic. I bugged him about taking a lunch break but he kept on working. After being stuck with old double pane, non-opening windows for over twenty years, I can't say enough how great it will be to open them while cooking and in summer! Our kitchen was warmer and more inviting over the winter. We couldn't even see out of the old windows and we have enjoyed watching birds at our back yard feeder. We shopped around for some comparison and found many competitors to be over priced, pushing us to expand the scope of project, extra long waiting periods and unhappy customers when checking references. We won't hesitate to call Joe at Ultimate Home Concepts again. He and his installer treated our home as if it were their own. We're very happy with the craftsmanship and product we received!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
