David & his team at JDM did a phenomenal job remodeling our bathroom on a budget. They gutted the original builders bathroom where there had been a leak in the shower behind the tile. They installed all new fixtures, including new vanity, new exhaust fan, new toilet, new sink/top, new vanity light, primed and color change the walls and ceiling. The tile work is FaNtAsTiC with custom niche in the shower. Their design suggestions regarding the tile, tile trim, and appointments helped us receive a much nicer bathroom than ANY of the other contractors we spoke to would have done for the budget... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I hired Mark to paint the front of my house, replace a screen on a screened-in porch and replace the doors on my shed. He did a great job. Don't be scared away by his hourly rate - he charged a fair price.

I was so impressed with the professionalism, promptness, and attention to detail of Ron and his team! He was able to help my husband and I by plowing out our driveway, sidewalks, and porch on incredibly short notice. Ron is wonderful to work with - I recommend his services to any home or business owner!

I had Nick rebuild a porch for me. The work was excellent and he was courteous and clean throughout the whole project. I would not hesitate to use him again. My neighbors are planning on having him do their porch this summer, I guess imitation is the ultimate form of flattery and he came through in spades.

Excellence, in all phases and aspects of the project, is the approach and standard that the A-Team exhibited from the outset, and consistently maintained, from evaluation through project completion, and follow up. Evaluation, Project Planning and Ongoing Communication We called A team (after unsuccessful attempts with two other companies) to address a roof leak on the attached porch, due to lack of flashing, when the porch was added on to the house. (One company told us this could not be fixed without replacing the entire siding with vinyl). A Team very promptly scheduled Chad to evaluate the issue. He was prompt, thorough, communicative, practical and very competent in analyzing that issue. He also noted some other areas of the roof needing work. But, he also suggested that before deciding on any of the work, we contact our insurance adjuster to assess some apparent hail damage (from last years' storm). We did. That resulted (the same day) in approval of an entire replacement of the roof, gutters and downspouts. Chad returned, at our request, to be present for the insurance adjuster's inspection, and met with us and the adjuster to discuss options and plans for the project. He was very helpful and constructive in that discussion too. The detailed work plan was approved and the insurance deposit check was issued at the end of that meeting. Soon after, Chad met with us to help pick out the new shingle and gutter/downspout colors, and start the scheduling. Scheduling and Project Completion The A Team office staff (and Chad) were in frequent touch with us as to the start date (which ended up being moved up, not delayed). As promised, the entire roof was completed in a single day, despite the extra time needed to deal with not only the siding/flashing issue on the porch roof, but also further complications that came up relating to the porch roof decking and underside decorative celling. Aaron (who personally supervised the overall job and did the detailed custom work on the porch) met with us to discuss options and costs to address that issue. He came up with a lasting and economical approach that maintained the decorative porch ceiling. The A team roofers worked efficiently, and neatly, avoiding damage to shrubs and plants, minimizing clutter and doing a great job on clean up. The gutters and downspouts were similarly completed the next day. Finally, the A Team is assisting in a detailed explanation and documentation (requested by our insurance adjuster) of the above described added work and materials, that may bring a substantial portion of these additional costs within insurance coverage. Even it does not, it is clear to us that Aaron came up with a cost effective correction of a problem that could be discovered only in the process of the re-roofing. Conclusion A team Construction is animated by its commitment to excellence, in every single aspect and dimension its work. Not only would I use them again - I plan to, for a poured/stamped concrete patio project, next year

We had Roy and his team do a front deck for us that we wanted to have it covered the following year. He was able to explain everything that he was going to do and was very patient with us. He provided drawings and pictures to help us envision what it was going to look like. We are extremely impressed and satisfied with his work and we get a lot of compliments from our friends and family. He had done such a great job that you can't tell the covered porch was added on. I would highly recommend hiring him for whatever projects you want done the right way.

Gary was very helpful in researching the best way to repair and redo painted woodwork that had not been done properly by another contractor. The project itself was to repair and repaint our back porch. I would call on him to do other projects in the future.

Essentially Jeremy remodeled every inch of our first house. New kitchen, new bath, new staircase, refinished loft space, new screen porch and deck. When I say "new", I mean down to the studs (and sometimes reinforcing those). He's very thoughtful and realistic in his recommendations, keeping in mind budget, durability, and resale value. I had specific aesthetics in mind design wise and he brought those ideas to life. Highly recommend.

We had Sweet Exteriors update our Master Bathroom by removing wallpaper, wall repair, painting, new tile floor, faucets for sinks and shower. The bathroom actually looks larger and has a great new feeling. They also did several other great jobs like our deck repair and stain, gutters, front porch railings, hallway bathroom. I highly recommend them. Seek them out, they are easy to work with and friendly. Thanks Sweet Exteriors.

We've had Robert over to do a number of jobs; re-roofed the house, gutters, new cement porch and front walks. Always found him to be fair, reliable, and stands by his work. Would definitely have him back in the future.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

      Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
