I experienced Judo instruction in high school for about 6 months. Then in college for over 1 year I studied Japanese Karate and many years later, 2 years of Shotokan Karate. At age 68, after experiencing various physical issues, I wanted to try an age appropriate martial arts to keep my reflexes beyond par and learn new skills. Unfortunately, some of the teachers I observed before choosing Peter Honigmann, forgot the need to tone things down for seniors, especially those with physical issues. Then I met Peter, whose style of teaching an amalgam of the best of the various styles, fit perfectly into my needs. He teaches situational personal defense so a student of any age and any ability can know what to if they encounter various dangerous situations, potential and actual. My fellow students and I enjoy the 1 hour class and look forward to it. It also says something when prior students renew.

I originally started taking classes with lee just for the expirence I have never done anything like this before and wound up really enjoying it. I have learned a lot from lee in a very short time and I'm eager to learn more. He is a pleasure to work with and makes training a lot of fun.

I initially signed up for this as a way to get back into shape, however thanks to Don and his Assistant instructors its morphed into something much more amazing. I'm only just barely a month into private training and group classes and I've already done so many things I didn't think my body was capable of doing. Not only that it's also an amazingly fun time throughout each class and session. I'm currently signed up with a friend and honestly all week we look forward to coming in and training with don! He makes it fun, and easy to grasp. Everything is explained step by step. If there is something you feel insecure about he's sure to work with you on it. If there's a certain style you want to work on that day he's more then happy to help. It's not about making money like most places are these days. He wants you to feel safe outside of the classroom and wants you to be confident in each technique you learn. Even his students, young to adults, will go out of their way to help you nail a technique or combo, something they obviously learned from Don. I would recommend him for any person looking to feel safer, stronger, more confident and even healthier in their life.

I got out of the Navy in 2007. Reinaldo Sanchez introduced me into Fitness & mixed martial arts after getting into a bad habit of drinking as a sailor. I always knew I was a competitive person so he found something that can motivate me and challenging for me. Once I started and I saw the results the only thing I can say after that is. One National Championship later in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and three gold metals in International competition....This man and these people are the real thing and you will most definitely see results. Although I felt nervous first walking in to Victory, I definitely felt welcome after the first few minutes after walking in. I was welcomed warmly by the instructor as well as by the majority of the students. When class started the instructor took time to give me attention to ensure that I was correctly doing everything. The more experienced students looked out for me as well. You could definitely tell that these instructors were not merely just having everybody go through the motions, but it was obvious that these instructors were very knowledgeable in Mixed Martial Arts. This gym definitely makes sure they pay close attention and are looking out for your safety while making sure you learn something new every time! I would totally recommend this place to men and women.
Jay did a great job accommodating my busy schedule. He is knowledgeable and professional. I recommend his class to beginners or anyone looking to improve his/her self-defense techniques.
Where do I begin? As an overweight man in his early 30s, I realized that if I didn't start taking care of my body now, I'd be setting the stage for future health problems. I can't stand gyms (too repetitive), and I have little patience for martial arts that serve no real life purpose. If I'm going to be stuck in a life or death situation, high-kicking attackers all around me isn't going to work. I whittled down which martial arts would actually interest me, and it came down to Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai. Lucky for me, Threshold had BOTH, and is right by my train stop and home. How much more convenient can you get?!? The Muay Thai classes are great. There's no "line up side by side and mimic my moves" here! The moves or combos are demonstrated multiple times, then your job is to practice them one for one with a partner. You learn to read real life opponents, not am imaginary figure taking all of your shots. It is fast paced and intense, but the methodology is such that even a rookie won't feel overwhelmed. Class is competitive, but at the same time the more advanced students do their best to get all new members to their level. Our instructors, Bill Shimuk and Ed Serra, have years of experience, and have both the patience and passion to impart their skills to us. Seriously, I haven't felt this great in over a decade. My daughter and I took a self defense class with Dylan at Players U. It was an awesome experience and I tell everyone about it. He was a great teacher and very professional. Patient and thorough, all Mom and girls should take this class. Boys being bullied should too! Just so they have an option to defend themselves. He teaches self confidence and Core strength thats beneficial to other sports and dance. We look forward to coming back this fall.
I am writing to say a few words and express my support for Bert Witte of Buffalo Grove Martial Arts. I have worked with Bert for over a year and have immensely enjoyed my time working with him. He is clearly an expert in the various martial arts which he teaches, always conducts himself in an extremely professional manner (and insists his staff does as well), and while he is always serious and respectful of the material he is training he displays the same respect to each individual in his class. I have previously taken martial arts classes at other locations but never really stayed with a class for more than a few months - to be honest I just never enjoyed it enough before, or felt as if I was getting enough out of it to keep going. I have found with Bert, however, that while his classes are serious and intense he has a way of making sure each class is a rewarding, enjoyable experience. He has a great personality, knows when and just how much to push, and is always tremendously supportive. In short he takes his classes very personally and makes sure they are conducted in the manner which he expects. Not only would I recommend Bert to anyone I have already recommended him to various family members who now also train with Bert and as well.
