I hired Jeff after a home inspection while selling my home. I needed to fix a few things I didn't even know needed fixing. This included changing the main water valve under the house to working in the attic venting the bathroom fan. I also had some exterior eaves that need replacement. Jeff know how to handle all the jobs. He did a great job addressing everything. He is very knowledgeable when I comes to home construction. I plan on calling Jeff when I move to my new home for any work needed.

I hired Jerry to complete drawings and load ratings for removing a load bearing wall between kitchen and dining room. Very prompt, knowledge, and professional. Plans were submitted to village for the permit and they had no questions and passed on the first submission. Additionally, cost was very reasonable. Wouldn't think twice about using him again.

Joe did a great job on my bathroom! He started it the next day and got the job completed in 2 days! New toilet vanity, painted walls and trim, and hung a new light fixture! Professional, clean, and completed the job under budget! He is coming back this week to install new flooring and trim in the family room.

Amir was extremely responsive and knowledgeable in his designs and suggestions. It was a pleasure working with him and he is now designing a home for my son and his wife. Amir has been very forthright in telling me where any additional design work is needed outside the scope of normal architectural design. This has eliminated confusion and made for a smoothly working project.

Roman created a set of drawings for an addition of an exterior walk-up basement entry to my home. He did a great job covering all the details, making suggestions that I had not considered , and came up with a finished set of design drawings in short order. Thanks Roman!

Chris designed our house and pole barn attachment. He has been readily available throughout the entire processes answering all our questions thoroughly. He has been patient with my husband and I as we tried to make mutual decisions. He has also been in contact with us during the building process. The house and pole barn aren't finished yet but I'm excited to see the final product.

Andrei completely renovated three of our bathrooms. He did an amazing job starting with the design of each of the bathroom. He has a great eye for bringing different materials and colors together. Having Andrei with us, really sped up material and color selections as we were done with selection and purchase for all three bathrooms in about two hours. This was a huge help and not mention a relationship saver :). Now to the work - his team did an excellent job on working through each of the bathroom. Andrei communicated clearly as to what was being done along with any changes that are occurring which may not have been included in the original estimate. We truly enjoyed working with him and his team. Look forward to next time we hire Andrei for next project.

We have a small house in Riverside. It is about 1,000 sf. It is a split level modern house built in the 1950's. We wanted an open plan concept with a cathedral ceiling. We removed wall to new ceiling, creating an upstairs loft. The project was completed in 2001.We have lived in it for 16 years! We love the plan and the cathedral ceiling 16' high. Our room is now open 20'x24', with new skylights above the living room. Arlene was a terrific help. We got our plans on time during the design phase, and got our permits without any new work or any changes to our design. We have enjoyed our redesigned home for the past 11 years and would definitely recommend Arlene to our friends! -Keller Jobe

Peter is an excellent interior designer with a great sense of space and light (and light means color). Working with him is an incredible adventure to discover new solutions for every possible space. I really enjoyed my time working with him and transforming my flat quickly and in budget into a home. I highly recommend him for his aesthetics, great sense of space and his chameleon abilities to merge with each individual's taste and expectations.

john managed a rather large remodel for my Naperville home. we put an addition on, remodeled the kitchen adding cherry 42" cabinets, granite and Corian counters. other work moved doorways, added 2 large family room windows, moved a slider to the kitchen, and did a lot of drywall work. it also entailed moving our electrical service and reconfiguring the deck. In my opinion, the job could not have gone better, or could we have gotten a better result! John found kitchen space where there was none and added tremendous guidance to the planning and scheduling stages. I can't say enough positive about uor experience!

It was a pleasure to work with Jerrica on my recent guest bathroom remodel. The bath was outdated and not at all how I wanted my guests to view my home. I just had no clue on what to do with it. I didn't even really know what my style was exactly. I just knew what I didn't like. The bath needed new flooring, wall treatment, vanity, fixtures and shower tile. I enlisted Jerrica to design the room and from the beginning of the project, Jerrica was able to tune into my ideal aesthetic and make me comfortable with the design process. As a first-time customer of an interior designer, this was very important to me! Jerrica provided a 3D rendering of what my bathroom would look like. I was amazed at the transformation from outdated bath to luxurious spa! She worked within our budget to create an inspired space. She has a very keen sense of color. She had ideas that I would never have thought of doing. I am so happy (and proud) with the way the room looks now. I want to my own master bath now. I cannot wait to work with her again.

Lauren designed our first floor bathroom in a 1918 Dutch Colonial. The aesthetics hadn't been updated since the 1970's and it was terribly cramped with little natural light. Lauren came in with fresh ideas and worked with our difficult layout to include an expansion and total reconfiguration to maximize our space. She was a great listener and was able to conceptualize exactly what we wanted. We will definitely be using her in our future projects.

Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

I was planning an addition to my home. I had no clue as to how complicated it could be. Between permits, the zoning requirements and not to mention the contractor problems that could have occurred. I was referred to Illusione Design by a friend. He said they did a great job for him and know I know why. Mr. Quintero and his team lead me through the whole project with professional advise and a level of experience and professionalism I have not experienced in a long time. What I now know could have been a really trying situation, went off without a hitch. The plans were done in no time and as far as knowing your way around city hall and all the codes. These guys really blew my mind. So yes. if you're planning any type of project, I think you would be smart to give them a call. I'm sure you will be pleased with the services they provide.

I cannot tell you enough good things about Joan Suzio. I interview several decorators to help me transform my house into a guy's place after having been divorced. Joan really listened and took A LOT of notes. She had a really good method which help me think about things in steps instead of getting overwhelmed. Joan is very considerate about the budget and has given me plenty of options. We worked on the Family Room/Kitchen, Living Room, Master Bedroom, and touched on Office, Hall Bathroom. The best expression in these tech days is OMG. My place is looking terrific and am still in the process. Thank you Joan for all your help and being a blast to work with!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
