nothing to recommend but just to share my story. --- Fact evaluation: Progress tracked by Matt Johnson Trained by Marcin Grobelny (instagram- @grobelnym) Training Time - October 2016- June 2017 Training Intensity- three hour per week Aim- slim down, lose fat and lose weight. Life Outside Training (when I do not have session with trainer)- cardio (cardio), and 17 running races plus 1 bike event in 9 months (how I spent my lazy weekends). Life Outside Training (reality)- a Mon- Fri job that sit in front of the computer 9-6, sometimes weekday OT till late night, or might take my weekend too. Results- more toned up, people no longer say "it seems like you are a little bit less chubby" but "you look slimmer", ~5% fat ratio down. --- This week marks my last week with Chitown Trainer, it has been a very very great 9 month with Marcin that I did not only learn about workout move but also the psychological, health and nutrition, workout and recovery chapters that is totally a bonus to me. Marcin has been my very first friend in town and probably one that I meet most frequent out of all these time. I learnt about his education, and I believe his academic background and body building experience has made him a very unique trainer because he had been educating me in a all-rounded manner. As time goes, I started to learn more about my body and my mindset, as well as the key to stay consistent and balance through out my days. I eventually train harder and more frequent; and be more honest with myself about the diet and I have dropped my fat ratio through all the months. One thing that I did not expect to happen, is that I actually improved from 32min/5k to 27 min/5k in less than 4 months' time. I did not pick up any running training, I enjoy food fest in the new year, I had deep dish and (quite a lot of) cheat meal, but still, a 5 minute improvement in such a short distant run are actually all from the hard work from weight lifting with Marcin. I used to fear leg day as I started because lower body training back in middle school basketball time has bulk me up so much. However, now I start to love my leg days more -- and as a result I am getting a little big addictive with running as well, which I used to think it is super-very-extremely-so-boring. With the encouragement form Marcin, I actually run more than I thought I would. Counting back the weeks, I have nailed 18 city-events in 9 month's time. Given that Chicago is not my home city, this is definitely a life time PR. Meeting Marcin has definitely become a motion to get up early as we train at 0530 most of the time. As I am leaving Chicago, I would look forward to meet Marcin again with a more toned body to show off how I am able to apply things I learnt from him and all the hard work I put in even I am out of the country. --- Thank you Marcin!! :)

When we first met with Patrick we were skeptical at first. But after trying to keep a regular workout schedule ourselves and not seeing results we decided to give him a try. He was able to devise an exercise routine and diet that was tailor made for us, taking into consideration our limitations and injuries. We found his idea of dieting and calorie counting a bit challenging. In fact, we hated it. We hated all of his diet suggestions. But once we figured out what foods worked for us, keeping us full and staying within our calorie count; we started to see results and we had enough energy throughout the day and to not feel hungry at night. We both started with our clothes fitting a bit snug and looking sloppy. Today we STILL don’t fit into our clothes. However, we’re proud to say there’s a lot more room in them now. Aside from being leaner and meaner, our faces and skin look alot better and we feel better. Patrick has motivated us to eat better, keep fit, and stay in shape and not order a lot of pizza. We’ve maintained our routine cardio and circuit training, make better food choices on a daily basis and even purchased a Reebok Stepper. His plan works. Thanks Patrick!!!!

I was doing high intensity interval training, which caused serious injuries to my knee and shoulder, so I wanted to get back into full body resistance training and cardio. After reading reviews, I chose Dan. It has been a wonderful ride ever since. He's very smart, thoughtful, and incredibly enthusiastic. He spends a great deal of time tracking your numbers so that there is genuine accountability as to the extent of your progress. After I saw the orthopedist about my shoulder and went to physical therapy, Dan took the recommended physical therapy exercises and integrated them directly into my workouts. Very creative; very cool. He's easy to communicate by text or email, and incredibly responsive. He's also very knowledgeable about the Chicago performing arts scene, which I enjoy discussing with him. Bottom line: I'm getting stronger; feeling more fit and confident; and not getting injured. Dan's been great.

I’m a former US Navy SEAL who was recently shot in the calf by ISIS while volunteering as a civilian in Iraq. After recovering enough to work out, I began to work with Austin 3-5 days a week. My goals were to lean up and restore my strength and cardio after not having been able to lift or run for almost two months. It’s been about 7 weeks, and I’m stronger, leaner, and faster than even when I was in the military! Thanks to Austin, my resting heart rate is even at the level of “a highly conditioned athlete.” If you’re able to do multiple sessions with him per week like I did, your results will be like nothing you’ve ever experienced. Also, due to his gym’s business model, his personal training rates are about HALF of the competition’s! Bottom Line: I can’t speak highly enough of Austin. He’s fun to work with and knows his stuff! I recommend him to all of my friends and even my own family.

Our family has been training with Gary for the past five years. In addition to providing great strength training, cardio exercise and diet information, Gary is very knowledgeable about working with clients recovering from injuries. He has safely and effectively guided us back to full health after we have completed phycial therapy. His one on one training, attention to individual needs and cutting edge technique, makes him a standout in this field.

Mike has been an amazing trainer. I had a 4 level spinal fusion which left me in more pain than before surgery. I haven't had a life for 3 years since because of the pain. I found Mike who not only has a bazillion fitness certifications but also has a medical degree. Within the first couple months I lost over 10 pounds and reduced the amount of pain medication by half! And the weight loss is without cardio yet because we have to fix my back issues first (he won't sacrifice safety for results which was the one big thing I was looking for) I am amazed. My quality of life has increased significantly and continues to every week. I literally had no hope but Mike really listened to my issues and put together a plan that works. He gave me an assesment with goals and where he believes he can get me with weight loss and pain management and how long it will take. He truly cares about his clients and stresses the fact that he just wants to help. He makes you feel comfortable. No intimidation like with some trainers. He is honestly saving my life. I've tried absolutely everything from physical therapy to chiropractors to a medical device inserted into my spine. His simplistic approach and high motivation is all I ever needed. I only wish I would've found him before I had surgery so I could have avoided the 3 years of my life spent in my house in excruciating pain. But, I've got him now and I look forward to the continued progress I am confident I will have with him as my trainer. I'm finally excited about something and have hope and it's all due to Mike Rundell. I highly recommend him and wish you all great success.

A gym Danny was previously employed at paired me up with him as my trainer. I signed up there after spending two years at a boxing gym. My goal at the time was to incorporate more strength training into my routine, but continue boxing from time to time as that is a workout I truly enjoy. I’ve been training with Danny now for almost a year. Prior to working with him, I had a lot of mixed feelings about working with a Personal Trainer. I no longer feel that way. I’ve done strength training, boxing, kickboxing, and circuits with Danny. He continues to help me break bad habits I developed from my previous boxing gym. I’m never bored with my PT sessions, I actually look forward to them and that is very important if you’re just starting off making a lifestyle change, or continuing to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In June 2015, Danny put me up to a challenge to lose 6 lbs before my next weigh in with him, and with hard work and determination, I lost 8 lbs that month! This was after bouncing around the same weight for the past few years. This gave me the motivation to participate in a 90 day challenge at my gym, which led to me getting back down to my High School weight from 20 years ago. I highly recommend Danny has a trainer. His work with clients isn’t just a job to him, it’s a passion. He brings a lot of experience and expertise; he has an awesome personality, is extremely positive, and wants to help you succeed.

What can I say-Chris is amazing! He will help you identify your goals and then reach them. He not only pushes during the work out, but also makes suggestions of fun cardio alternatives. Having worked with several trainers in the past, I can definitely say Chris is the best. He is pleasant (even at 7am, which is more than I can say), friendly and dedicated. If you have a goal, you will reach it with Chris and do it with a smile!

Adam is not only my trainer but also my friend. He helped me get in the best shape I have ever been in for my wedding. He can tailor to your needs and fitness goals and will also keep any injuries or limitations in mind. He has a vast knowledge of the human body, nutrition, and overall fitness and incorporates lifting, strength training, and high intensity cardio. He has been my trainer for 6 years now and I am very happy with the relationship we have established. He has even given me workouts to do on my own when I am out of town or don't have a gym while traveling.

Fuel your training workouts have been a super positive experience for me! My friend and I were working out with another trainer at the gym and the trainer suddenly stopped answering our calls. Vera and I are good friends and we use the workouts to push each other and connect on a weekly basis. FYT came to our rescue!! Linda and Johnny realized that what we need is a total body workout and proceeded to teach us about proper nutrition and habits. I am inspired each week to keep this up and further challenge myself the rest of the week Cardio Cardio Cardio !!! Linda is our primary trainer who is very informed and motivating! Johnny backs her up too . I greatly appreciate their professionalism and flexibility. I would recommend them to my best friends.

I began going to Edge Fitness and Performance in 2014 and would like to say this is one unique gym. The workouts at first may seem intense but they fly by, before you know it the hour is up and you’ve gotten in an amazing cardio workout. You cannot get the same workout in a regular gym. Here you receive a personal trainer with every class and can attend a few days a week up to unlimited classes, depending on your package, for much less than hiring on a standard personal trainer. The environment is very friendly and up beet. The staff and owner are all so knowledgeable and really care about their clients and helping them in meeting their goals. They know each individual member by name and everyone is treated like family. The atmosphere is very positive, energetic and motivating. Each year the gym holds an award ceremony and dinner for the members. Members are recognized for their hard work and accomplishments which again hits more on a personal level where as you would not receive acknowledgements like this at a regular gym. I would highly recommend Edge Fitness and Performance to others.

I trained with Jason for more than 3 years while living in the suburbs of Chicago. Jason helped me in losing weight while building muscle and cardio endurance. I had always been resistant to cardio and now I am running 2 to 3 half marathons a year. Jason is also very understanding and realistic with his approach. He understands the every day challenges of maintaining a work life balance not only with being fit but in maintaining a healthy diet.

Sarah is a fantastic trainer. She is really knowledgable about weightlifting, cardio, stretching/muscle groups and diet. She has advice on it all, which really helped with seeing results. Before training with Sarah, I did not realize the importance of a strong core. She has shown me the importance by teaching me some great core exercises that have helped my overall strength dramatically.

When I went to Ben I told him that weightlifting wasn't for me and I really didn't think I could ever get toned. He told me that he could get me a big chest, big biceps, and big legs- no problem- BUT that's good for only looks. What he wanted to do for me was much more. Ben wanted to shape my body to be fit, lean, and functional- a body that would serve me well throughout my life and keep me physically healthy and active way into my old age. Through his weightlifting program and cardio work outs my body is not bulging with muscles but it is toned, lean, and in the best shape it has ever been. With Ben's coaching and motivation you feel like the strongest person in the gym even if you are lifting the lightest weight. With every session, Ben explains each exercise with his expert knowledge in human anatomy and exercise science. So with each exercise I know what I am are doing, why I am doing it, what muscle I am working, and the results I can expect. Knowledge, motivation, customized workouts, and results is why I have been with Ben so long and have never sought anything else.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

    Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

    • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
    • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
    • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
    • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
    • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
    • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
    • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
