I liked that they offered to take their shoes off to come into my house and that they tested everything to make sure they knew the problem before taking my dryer apart. Was a fairly easy fix (replace heat coils) but something I could not do myself. Price was fair.

Melvin was one of the first replies that we received to our dryer repair request. He followed up on the morning before he came, and showed up exactly on time. Melvin is just as personable and professional as the other comments say that he is. Our repair went fine and at a very reasonable price. Melvin had the replacement parts with him, so everything was completed in a short amount of time. He is now on our list for any future appliance repairs that we may need.

Josh answered quickly and came the very same day to look at the repairs to be done. The next day everything was done and well done! I've been very pleased to work with Josh: fast, good worker and good price! And despite the very cold weather he stayed a bit longer to also fix and adjust our garage door. A crack! I'm not attaching picture because the painting is still pending (too cold to paint outside). Won't hesitate to call him again in the future when needed

Ben from Jay Charles was able to come right out and took care of several issues we were having with leaking faucets/toilets immediately. Both Nic and Ben are professional, kind and very responsive. I will be using Jay Charles in the future for other home projects and repairs.

Rich was a pleasure to work with. I had a leaking shut off valve and fauce that needed replacing in a large condo building. Even though it was a small job, he was very professional and courteous. He is very knowledgeable and will explain in detail what needs to be done. I highly recommend Rich for any of your home repairs.

About

I have studied for three years about appliance repair. I will be starting up in the near future but as for now, I will be using my book smarts to machines now and will have to get used to all the different machines. I will only offer very low rates at the beginning, and when I start up, I will probably go by the standard book fees as most appliance repair persons. I work during the day but will do this on nights and weekends depending on your location. I work in Carol Stream and drive to Hampshire, places in those areas. I will most likely take on some further places on the weekends.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

How long do fridges last?

Refrigerators can last 10 to 20 years, although the most common lifespan is about 13 years. If your fridge is acting up, consider its current age when deciding whether to invest in repairs or buy a new one. Common easy fixes include faulty thermostats, dirty coils and clogged drain lines. Thermostats and dirty coils can be generally be fixed for an average cost of $80-$100. Clogged drain lines, which usually cause leaks, can often be fixed for under $200.

More complex refrigeration repairs such as replacing a bad compressor or replenishing low refrigerant can cost more because of expensive parts and higher labor. A new compressor costs an average of $200, not including labor. If labor is an average of $75-$100 per hour, and the repair takes 3 hours, you’re looking at roughly $500. Consider the age and purchase cost of your fridge; investing $350 in a $600 fridge that is 8 years old may not be cost-effective.
