Ben worked with us extremely well as another contractor on our remodeling project had numerous setbacks and schedule changes. Ben adjusted to when we needed him. Quality work, and we plan to use him on more things around our house.

All work was completed on time and on budget. Very high quality work. Had absolutely no objection when I added on a few additional smaller projects as well. Had him repaint my kitchen, master bath, guest bath, guest bedroom and first floor power room. All work looks simply amazing! Would definitely hire him again in the future! Sourced through Thumbtack. For being my first experience using Thumbtack, I was definitely satisfied with its role in linking homeowners with contractors.

Gino did an excellent job, he was professional and friendly and made sure I was satisfied with the results. I was impressed enough to schedule a follow-up job next week to do a preventative main sewer rodding.

Bradley was able to pinpoint location of a leak in a vent that was causing sewer odors in an apartment that 3 other plumbers weren't able to find. He was also able to fix the leak with some creative work to keep damage to the floor at a minimum. Very reasonable price too. Bradley's definitely my new plumber.

I hired Be Electric to fix a leaky toilet in one od our rental houses that was supposed to have been repaired by a different contractor (part of a $20k project of various items needed around the house.) The contractor who did the work didn't even follow up with me when I notified them the toilet was still leaking. Be Electric came to the house within a few hours of my request, identified the problem, shopped for replacement parts, and repaired the toilet. I'm very satisfied with his professionalism and would gladly use him again in any of our properties.

David & his team at JDM did a phenomenal job remodeling our bathroom on a budget. They gutted the original builders bathroom where there had been a leak in the shower behind the tile. They installed all new fixtures, including new vanity, new exhaust fan, new toilet, new sink/top, new vanity light, primed and color change the walls and ceiling. The tile work is FaNtAsTiC with custom niche in the shower. Their design suggestions regarding the tile, tile trim, and appointments helped us receive a much nicer bathroom than ANY of the other contractors we spoke to would have done for the budget... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Extremely pleased with the service I received. In spite of running into some unexpected plumbing problems the job was finished on time and within budget. The price was 1/4 to 1/10 that of other plumbing contractors I had contacted. Without a doubt will use for any future plumbing needs.

Chris came out to diagnosis our plumbing problem right away. He then ordered the part and returned to fix it when he said he would. That's the key words...'returned to fix it when he said he would.' Too often contractors make promises and then don't deliver. Chris was not only timely he was always friendly and easy to work with. We will definitely hire Chris again for future plumbing issues.

We initially contracted with Tom to remodel two bathrooms and install tile floor throughout our downstairs family room, hall and son's downstairs bedroom. Tom was doing such a great job so we began to trust his work the more we saw getting done. We then also asked him to remove wood paneling, install drywall, paint our entire lower level, add can lighting and install solid core doors throughout our house. We are thrilled with the finished product. He works faster alone then other contractors do with entire crews! Great work at a reasonable price.

Jim was very quick responding to all my concerns and questions. In fact we had we had two other contractor’s in prior and Jim was on the was the only that gave us quote. He also started on time and finished a day early. Jim’s work was outstanding and reasonably priced, so much in fact that our realtor asked for his contact if information. I will certainly be contacting Jim and more drywall needs.

Wow!!! What can I say, Tom and Harry are amazing. I called around because I needed my sewer line rodded and it was complety clogged, like an explosion of toilet paper and "ahem" you know everywhere. I called a few plumbers and they walked in the door and had standard prices. Long story short. 1st quote was $655 , 2nd quote $295. I used the second plumber and they were completely inexperienced and deceptive. They messed up the sewer gate valve and had to be called back out and they tried to charge me to complete the job they didn't complete and wrote the bill up for 450 instead of 295. Needless to say I went to Thumbtack to find another plumber and Tom responded immediately and we spoke a few times and said he'd stop by and look at it free of charge. Well he determined that he could do the job and the price to rod the line was great, they came over on Tuesday in the evening and started rodding with the electric eel, and reached roots and other things and the line was still clogged. They stayed until 9pm and came back the next day , they needed more line and came back finished the job the next day and got my sewer unclogged. Just wow, they went the extra mile and saw some other items that could use a quick repair and were more than reasonable. Hire Tom and Harry! They don't have a book with set prices like the big guys. Straight forward and very friendly. I was quoted absolutely ridiculous amounts for removal of the old sewer gate and back flow valve inside and install a new clean out in the yard. Tom quoted me a price I can't say no to!! We're scheduling this install in July or August. Give Tom a try, the level of workmanship, professionalism , quality , HONESTY, reliability are second to none. I wouldn't hesitate to call the guys that get it done. Trust me this is a real review, so happy I didn't need to take a mortgage out and get a second job to fix the issue. Thank you Tom and Harry.

Unlike so many contractors, he was on time and finished when he said he would be done. He built our shed (with warped lumber that came in the kit) in just over a day while others quoted 2+ days and his price was more than fair. He and his crew did a great job of making things work even though the kit was not the greatest. I plan on hiring him again and referring him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
