During an inside inspection, People's gas found 2 coupled flex pipes connected to our dryer and decided to disconnect our dryer and cap the connection (even though there was no gas leak). This left my spouse and I going to the laundromat for about a month and a half. I tried to hire a plumber through Westward, our condo management company, and that never panned out. so decided to look elsewhere for a solution. I signed up for Thumbtack and set up my project. Salvo with ISA Euro Pro Construction responded within an hour of my posting, we communicated about a time to come out, and they met me at my condo the next day. We'd received quotes to open the wall and that would have been a lot of time, materials + drywall and a lot of labor time. Salvo and Vito came up with a very nice and innovative solution to extend the pipe downward on the wall behind the washer and then installed a 5 foot flex pipe across to the dryer. The install looks great and I'm very happy with the final product. I am extremely satisfied with their solution, their professionalism, and the price; I highly recommend ISA Euro Pro Construction.

Last week in my house he replaced outlets, light plates, removed a timer in front of my house, covered it over with plate. Went & bought all the supplies. All this took 5.5 hours. He was late but he called me & told me he would be late. Everything looks great & works well. I needed additional work so we scheduled him to come back out and replace more outlets, fix my closest, fix my bed & rehang my mirror which fell of my wall. He did that work today & will be back another time for some more work, & then sometime in the fall for more work.

I hired Ben to remove a pedestal sink I had in my bathroom and install the vanity and sink I had already purchased. He was fast to respond and even asked if he could come early. Clearly explained what was going on and when he ran into some problems, like needing to cut away some tile baseboard to have the vanity flush to the wall and how my wall was a little warped, he explained what he could do to fix it. I am very please with the final product and wish I would have done this way earlier.

Great experience working with Jeff. Great communicator for setting up a time to refinish my counters - which turned out great! He even added some caulk to where the counters meet the wall to prevent water damage after he saw there were some cracks in mine. Will use again for future needs!

Michael repaired what was my attempt to mount a TV on a thin plaster wall. He patched all the holes on the side of the wall that I tried to mount the tv on. He repaired the damage I caused to the other side of the wall and came up with a solution so my TV could still be mounted and he even mounted it! Extremely knowledgable in plaster, great attention to detail, cleans up after himself and has a friendly yet professional disposition. I would recommend him to anyone looking for plaster work no matter how big or small the job.

David & his team at JDM did a phenomenal job remodeling our bathroom on a budget. They gutted the original builders bathroom where there had been a leak in the shower behind the tile. They installed all new fixtures, including new vanity, new exhaust fan, new toilet, new sink/top, new vanity light, primed and color change the walls and ceiling. The tile work is FaNtAsTiC with custom niche in the shower. Their design suggestions regarding the tile, tile trim, and appointments helped us receive a much nicer bathroom than ANY of the other contractors we spoke to would have done for the budget... Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Brendon & Kyle came to take down our plexiglass from our screened in porch. They texted me to let me know they were running late and then sent me the exact time they would be at my house. They were polite and courteous. They got the job done quickly and without issues. We were nervous since this was the first time someone other than the builder or ourselves who have handled the plexiglass which can crack if it bends too much. They did a fantastic job and I would definitely hire them again to put the plexiglass back up this winter!

Claudio was great. We had him hang a flat screen tv on a plaster wall! It was not a small task but Claudio handle it with ease. He was very professional, did great work and made sure to clean up any mess he made. When we paid Claudio we gave him a tip in addition to his fee. He text me after the fact to make sure that was correct. Talk about honest man! We will definitely hire him again.

Joe installed baseboard and quarter round, hung a TV/Bookshelf wall unit, replaced a shower curtain rod in our main bathroom and located studs in our front hall closet (stud finder challenged here). Joe is great to work with, he got the job done for us on very short notice and with high quality. We will definitely be using his services again.

DEMO AND REMODEL Had a water damage issue in the basement that needed to be addressed from water leaking from a basement window. We had to re-grade the adjacent outside soil to pitch water flow away from the house and tuck point the blocks affected by the leakage. We contacted Steamatic by referral at work who used them to do a similar water damage fix. The wet wall had drywall since it is a finished basement. We decided to demo the drywall and re-configure the room with an office addition. Steamatic gave me the best price for the demo and installation of green board on all the outer walls as well as painting, electrical/ lighting, doors(2) and shelving (we bought a pre-fab but installed it as a built-in. Within a month all the work was done and I now have my private office with adjacent storage room. Don't hesitate to do your remodeling home project like I did and waste precious time finding a remodeling company you can trust. Call Steamatic and get it done and enjoy!

Jeff from Homan Remodleing came and completely remodeled my kitchen and master bathroom. He helped plan and design in the beginning as my wife and I couldn’t figure out what we wanted. Jeff stuck to his original estimate and went above and beyond fixing things that were found behind the walls once demo was completed without tacking on any cost. The kitchen and bath came out better than I could have imagined. I would highly reccomend Jeff for any home improvement or remodeling job.

My experience with D2O Army Construction came at a most important and wonderful time; my husband and I were expecting our first born and wanted to create a nursery space in our room for her. The paint job was beautiful and they built a separating wall for the nursery that looks as if it was always there. It was such clean work. Not only did a D2O Army Construction consultant go with us to help us price the best materials but they completed a job in days that I thought would take weeks! They were very reasonable with costs (we did not exceed our budget) and I am planning on calling these guys again for any work I need in the future. Highly recommend!

I called Kevin in to work on my kitchen drywall which was a bit of a mess. Half of the walls were new drywall and the other half was compiled of the original plaster. I thought this was be an impossible job, but Kevin made the walls look great and you cant even tell where the seams are between the two materials. What's better, is the Kevin was easily the most responsive contractor I have ever worked with. Very flexible to accommodate our schedule, polite and communicative and made sure we knew where he was at each step of the project. Great experience and I will have him back to work on other projects without a doubt!

Very professional work, applied drywall to a complicated situation involving an exposed wall with external piping. Per my request he created openings for certain access pipes but did this in an artful manner. Otis is a cheerful professional who completed the work promptly in a short period of time and left my condo without any debris or signs he was there, just a perfect wall. Very reasonable price.

Francis and his team did an outstanding job, we couldn't be happier with the level of work and the service provided. Francis was able to schedule us in quickly and he or his team were there exactly when they said they'd be. Francis even helped me pick out a wall color. Every step of the way was done professionally and courteously and our house was left cleaner than when they came. We plan to use Francis for any other work we need and would highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
