I hired Mark to paint the front of my house, replace a screen on a screened-in porch and replace the doors on my shed. He did a great job. Don't be scared away by his hourly rate - he charged a fair price.

Franklin put tile on our kitchen floor and trim. He did a very good job, highly recommend! He can do many things so we will definitely hire him again for door replacement and other projects. He works fast, not like the previous guy we hired. He is a very nice and honest guy, very reliable and easy to work with. He was always on time.

My husband and I hired Brian to help with a few projects around our house. He helped with everything we requested and was extremely knowledgeable about the wide range of requests we had (door installation, trim work, electrical, etc.). He was quick and thorough. As new homeowners we are grateful that we found Brian. I know we will use him again and I have already sung his praises to my friends.

Tom managed the project of replacing the posts for our deck and replacing our garage door. The worker who dug out the posts spent most of a day getting the old posts dug out and putting in new concrete footings. He returned promptly when the footings had set to put the new posts in. I liked the fact that he left no mess and left the area clean. We are also happy with the new garage door, which was put in in a day's time. I liked the fact that Tom kept us informed by email of everything that was happening. He also has been great on follow-up to make sure we are happy with the work that was done. I would highly recommend Tom and A-Team Construction.

When Storm Guard appeared at my door asking to do a free roof inspection my gut reaction was to say no thanks and close the door. I then rethought this because I knew my roof was pretty old and in need of replacement within the next few years. I thought it couldn't hurt to have someone up there to see how bad of shape its in. After they inspected the roof they came down with pictures of visible hail damage. Nothing too severe but enough that they thought it was worth calling the insurance company. The insurance adjuster came out and also found wind damage. Given the age of the roof the insurance company was on the fence but in the end they covered the entire roof in full. Insurance only covers a like roof. I had the cheap 3-Tab before. So I could have replaced it for nothing if I stuck with the 3-Tab. Storm Guard had a good selection of roof options to choose from and it wasn't much to upgrade to the top of the line, asphalt, two tone, architectural shingle. They came out and got the job done in a day. The new roof looks amazing. I looked it over as much as I could and could not find a flaw with it. The only issue during the install was one of the gutters got a small ding in it during removal. I mentioned this and they came out and fixed it up right away. Even though you can't tell now, he said if I wasn't happy with it that they would replace the gutter. Storm Guard did an excellent job, were easy to work with, and I would easily recommend them to anyone else.

Scott is a professional, and very easy to work with. He came and created / installed shelving for my garage. The shelves are heavy duty, and really helped get things organized and off the floor. Will definitely use Scott again in the future!!

Currently painting was very enthusiastic about my very large project of painting my entire home, PLUS all the trim and all the ceilings and exterior doors. There were three guys and they were very nice and so quiet while they worked. I honestly didn't know when they left for the day. They moved all the furniture and removed all the pictures from my walls so I had no prep work to do, which was nice. They were also very happy to go over things that I thought needed more attention and kept working until the project was to my satisfaction. They also did a couple of other things I had requested like caulking and patching. There were a couple of communication mishaps between Lydan (the owner and his guys) while I was getting carpet installed at the same time, but no harm came from it, just a little annoying. The whole project took about two weeks, and that might bother some people but I really didn't need it done sooner than that so it wasn't an issue for me.

We had gotten 3 bids with local Drywall Contracters, GDC was not the cheapest. When Dan arrived to quote our project of Drywalling our garage, I knew he was a professional. He arrived on time and took his time to ask questions of what our expectations were and what he needed to do to achieve those expectations. His crew did an excellent job installing, plastering and applying a prime coat of paint on the new drywall. We were well pleased and hired then a second time for a heater installation project. This is not a Company that you can call one week and expect them to be there the next week. They are very busy and will need time to schedule your project. Maybe a month or so out from the quote.

Finding a good handyman needn't be difficult--just call Craig. He completed quite a variety of work to help me prepare my house for sale, including installing water barrels and new downspouts, removing a satellite and repairing roof, installing fans and light fixtures, hanging a medicine cabinet, grouting, concrete patching, and hanging a new storm door, among other projects. Craig did excellent work, and it is clear that he is a very skilled, trustworthy, and fair handyman. I recommend him so highly--I wish I had found him years earlier.

Replaced and old manual wooden garage door with a new one including a motor. Was efficient and completed the project on time within the estimated quote. Very professional and clearly he knows what he is doing. I was very comfortable leaving him to complete the project on his own. If you are looking for an installer or repair look no further. I highly recommend. Cheers!

TSL did several projects for me including building a second story 20 x 40 deck. The thing is absolutely perfect. TLS had to disassemble the metal pre-drilled railing and balusters for the stairs and then re-drill and assemble the railings - again, absolutely perfect. TLS also redid a bathroom, painted, tiled, reframed the garage, etc. Again, all perfect at a price that I could come close to beating. I have more projects in the future and will only use TLS on my seven-figure house unless they turn me away. Tim has my contact information for individuals looking to obtain a reference over the phone.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

        Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

        • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
        • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
        • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
        • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
          • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
