Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

I moved back to Madison ironically about a couple months before the COVID pandemic hit and the lockdown began. I was interested in gaining weight, specifically muscle. As long as I could remember, I'd always been skinny - painfully skinny. As long as I could remember, I'd always felt ridiculously tiny and weak. Despite that, I played volleyball competitively years back and practiced yoga for years, but I never really put on any significant weight and I never really ventured into weight lifting (save some very sporadic minor accessories). I knew I was in a mental slump when I moved back to Madison, and I realized I really needed to commit more time to my physical health, knowing it would help my mental improve. Talking to some guy friends and doing my own research, I decided I wanted to try power lifting. It wasn't enough to just do regular weight lifting - I wanted to feel strong and capable in my body. I'm an anomaly, because I'm currently not on social media (I know, hold the gasp), so I used Thumbtack to find a trainer. I wanted to find a trainer who was a woman and specialized in power lifting, and I found that ten-fold in Ming. She's the only female trainer in Madison who specializes in power lifting, and she's only one of a few women who specialize in body building/weight lifting with an emphasis on barbell compound lifts. As a person who's very hard to open up and who was very intimidated by the notion of lifting around strong and muscular people, I can say with full confidence that Ming has an innate ability to make anyone feel comfortable. She will give you not only the encouragement but program specifically tailored for you and your goals that you need to progress in your fitness journey. You will see progress and you will feel supported the whole way through. You might not believe in yourself at first, but you will, believe me, and Ming will help you when self-doubt gets in the way, no doubt about it - she does that for me. She customizes the workouts/plan that you do outside of your PT sessions with her and she helps drill down your macros - all based on your personal goals and body type. Despite the ~3-month period that Madison was in lockdown, I've gained over 20 pounds since starting training with Ming and made huge strength gains. I started not being able to bench even the women's bar or squat the olympic bar. I started deadlifting maybe 65 pounds. My one-rep maximum for bench is now 80, squat is 155 and deadlift is... I can't find it, but trust me, it's a lot better! I'm a diehard perfectionist, so I often get hung up thinking about how long of a way I have to go, but Ming always reminds me how far I've come. You've probably heard it before, especially given you're in the process of looking for a PT right now, but your health and fitness is like any other thing you do that helps you improve your quality of life - it's an investment, and it's WELL worth it! Ming's rates are very reasonable and her level of professionalism and quality of work is absolutely top of the line. Finally, for those of you who are workout-averse, I have to add that the PT sessions with her are *so much fun*; just as much as you're prepared for sweat, be prepared for lots of laughter.
