Brian did a very professional job on our porch that needed to be restored in the post and the porch, it was for our closing and was done on time for the inspection that was needed to sell the house. Also it was done a very good cost to us. This job was done in Franksville, Wisconsin just outside of Racine and Milwaukee.

Jeff provided quality services for me. He is gruff over the telephone, but was very interested in negotiating the quality of the materials for my new porch screens. He entered a low bid to get the job, and we did sort of a dance about how much I should pay him as the job progressed (but the screening materials we ended up with were more work to install), but I think we came out mutually satisfied. After I paid him the enhanced fee, while he was still working, I called him with additional input about what I thought we'd agreed to. . .and he went back over the work before leaving the job to improve the fit and the joining work. I'd definitely hire him again, and hope to do so.

I am very pleased with working with LCM Contracting. Matt was very responsive throughout the entire process which I am so appreciative of. He was quick to come over and review the project and send me an estimate as well as answer questions. This project was for replacing outside porch posts and he kept me updated on when they would come as the weather was not cooperating (heavy rain for several days). They were prompt on arriving when they said they would and got the new posts installed and I’m thrilled knowing an old 100+ year old side porch has new steady support! I would use LCM again and appreciate their timely communication and thoroughness on the job.

Hired Steamatic to install a a 250 ft. wood fence with 2 gates. The bid was lower then 4 other quotes. We selected a treated pine fence with large clasp handles for the gates and an arbor as a decorative feature. The crew did an amazing job. They arrived on time, cleaned up during the entire installation and instructed me how to "lock" gates with a waterproof locking system. I asked for a painting bid while the guys were working and hired them to paint our garage and porch. Quite honestly, my house looks amazing! The fence framed the house with a whole new appeal and the fresh porch paint with dark color trim accent makes our house the best looking house on the block! I highly recommend the Steamatic team for any property improvement jobs and would use them for future projects. Jill J

I had my concrete front steps replaced and my porch got a make-over. A few boards replaced and tightened and then the whole thing repainted. It turned out great. Jason was very considerate on my price. I would reccommend him to family and friends.

I had a house to sell & had just bought one to down size to. I was in a panic though, when our town had a bad hail storm! Just my luck 2 houses damaged that needed 2 roofs, windows replaced, siding, gutters, etc. Just days before putting on the market to sell. I called David, with Olson Builders and found him & his company easy to work with. He took over dealing with my insurance company on both houses. What a relief!! Both jobs were done immediately & professionally. I'm fussy, clean up was great guys!! Yes, I would definitely use David, with Olson Builders again. Almost forgot, I also had him add to the back of our new house a covered porch. We can watch deer in the rain now! Wonderful job, thanks guys!

I prefer only my initials by used if these comments are quoted. My first contact with Jerry was 20 years ago when he completely rehabbed my 1893 era house. This was a multi-month project involving much deliberation from both of us. He tore down walls, replaced siding, designed & constructed a front porch, replaced roof. The results were most appreciated. Last year, when my neighbor's tree came crashing through my garage roof, Jerry was my first thought & he came to the rescue promptly. Since my roof needed to be replaced, he did that as well. All 5 of the categories above he satisfied completely.

Manuel rebuilt the rear porch and staircase on my duplex. It was a time sensitive project that had to happen in conjunction with a major foundation repair. He made it happen. He does great work! I would and will have Manuel back for more projects.

He replace rotted wood trim on house and patched cement pillar. He is Professional: kept open communication, kept work area clean & safe and when i added on, the cement pillar, he did not have an attitude. When my fiances improve i will need to hire someone to rebuild my porch with a ramp. He is the one i am going to hire.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
